A weekly conversation about the hot issues and major challenges we face in Connecticut and America, as seen through the blue-colored lens of one self-described progressive, and from the perspective of one perpetually angry and disappointed man.

The latest: A talk with Democratic candidate for state Senate in the 28th district, Michelle Lapine McCabe! We discuss her work at a food justice nonprofit, and how that work and her experience running for office previously has informed her decision to once again run this fall.

Plus, results from Super Tuesday 2, and how the growing COVID-19 pandemic highlights an acute need for Medicare for All in this country.

The season being cancelled is surely disappointing for the kids, their families, and the supporters but this pandemic is too dire to look past. This is too important to overlook.

Hundreds of students from schools around the state swarmed the offices of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Wednesday morning, even throwing eggs at the building, in protest of a decision made the previous day to cancel the remainder of the high school sports seasons.

Who’s afraid of socialism? According to some pundits, everyone should be. Today’s adherents of democratic socialism have greatly increased over the past few years, and not just on college campuses.

Our Super Tuesday Recap! The big winners of the day were Joe Biden, who won 10 states, and everyone else who can’t stand Michael Bloomberg, as he decided to drop out after spending a half of $1 billion on his most recent vanity project.

What changes for Bernie Sanders going forward? What role will Elizabeth Warren play after she finished no better than third in any state, including her home state of Massachusetts?

Plus, a discussion with two members of the Connecticut WOLF-PAC on campaign finance reform and how we got to the point we are at by allowing corporate personhood and letting money in politics run rampant.

Rep. Jack Hennessy of Bridgeport, told NBC that “The whole idea of injecting a witches brew of chemicals that may work in a laboratory when it comes into the body there is no telling what happens. What is being presented in this bill is not the truth. It’s not a one-size-fits-all thing.”

Connecticut lawmakers have been trying to pass a bill that would ban parents from citing religious exemptions in order to stop their child from being vaccinated. Last year, Connecticut’s Department of Public Health estimated that up to 7,800 children...

The latest: Join Ed and James for a chat with former New Milford mayor and current candidate for State Senate in the 30th District, David Gronbach! We discuss the state of healthcare in America and in our state, and how small tweaks to municipal plans to include small businesses would make an incredible difference in the lives of human beings (and, bonus, it makes business sense, too!).

Plus, clean slate legislation courtesy of Senator Gary Winfield, and the debate debacle in SC. Cap the last week in February with a little bit of chatting liberally! Available at Apple Music, Spotify, and elsewhere. Elsewhere includes this link below!

👱🏼➕🧓🏻 💰 ➡️ ⚰️
On the morning after Michael Bloomberg‘s rhetorical flaying by the words of Elizabeth Warren in the Nevada debate, enjoy our chat with indomitable activist and force of nature, Terra Volpe, alongside her inspiring daughter, Katie, one of the youngest activists we know!

Since it is the week we celebrate Presidents’ Day, we wanted to focus the discussion on activism and civic involvement, an area in which Terra has become an expert and a leader in our state. Hear more about how she became involved in organizing and activism, and why it is required of all of us to seek discomfort, move outside of our comfort zone, and help affect change.

Enjoy!

Two episodes in a week?! ALRIGHT!

Coming off the fresh hell in Iowa, we had hoped to talk with Zack Campbell on Tuesday about what was going down. But then it all went down hill much faster than anticipated.

Regardless, Zack took time to chat with us today, and we're glad they did! Hear from someone with a very deep, very intimate knowledge of politics, grassroots organizing, polling data and much more on what they saw on the ground in Iowa, and what it means going forward. New Hampshire is next Tuesday, and maybe we'll know who won Iowa by then!

Enjoy at the Audioboom website below, or peep it wherever you normally go for your pod fix.

We’re back with some cauc’ talk! Check out the latest episode with some of our thoughts on the debacle in Iowa, plus a couple of other relevant news stories from back home in Connecticut.

We are hoping to have a second episode ready to go this week featuring Zack Campbell of Connecticut Working Families Party, who was on the ground in Iowa for the event.

Until that is ready, enjoy!

Get the guillotines ready...

The gang is talking about this week's biggest news, including Midnight Moscow Mitch & the Impeachment Party in the Senate, Greta at Davos and the climate crisis we are grappling with, and Hillary going on the offensive against Bernie, because we're STILL litigating the 2016 election on at least two fronts. We talk about Ned's property tax relief promise which looks like an empty one, and the return of Mr. Hyde, the erstwile landscaper and ne'er-do-well lobbyist who has stayed topical by sharing his sexist and misogynist views, being implicated in the Parnas messages for surveilling a US diplomat, and alienating himself from even his base, calling J.R. Romano of the CTGOP a "RINO." 🦏

You can't make this stuff up, even Orwell or Atwood would surely agree that our flavor of dystopia is a little too on point these days. Join us for this week's episode, starring climate science expert, Dr. Mitch Wagener, who tells us that all we as individuals try to do to combat climate change is a start, but still insufficient. The demon we must slay first ... is capitalism. 💵

🏋️‍♀️NEW EPISODE!🏋️‍♀️

State Representative Anne Hughes (D-135) stopped in to chat with us about a lot of things, including Tooth Fairy economics, some incredibly cool history about one of Easton's most famous farms, and precisely how many f*cks women of a certain age have left to give after everything's said and done. 💁🏻‍♀️🙅🏼‍♀️💁🏾‍♀️

Oh, and tolls. We talked about transportation, urban planning, and tolls. 🔮

Check out the episode, linked, as it always is, below these words, at the free site Audioboom. Note kindly though, good leftist, that this podcast is also available at nearly every other podcast-friendly platform imaginable, including Spotify and Apple Music.

Happy Hump Day, and shout-out to Brian T. Smith out of Colchester for his special election win, and to Jen Leeper in Fairfield for coming within less than 100 votes of flipping that seat. November's coming! 🗳

I know this is exhausting for you too, dear reader/listener, but we talk about tolls again because THEY KEEP TALKING ABOUT TOLLS, AGAIN. Plus, did you know that 2020 is an election year? Yeah! It is! No one's mentioned it until you heard it right here, though!

🎊 New Year, New ... Co-Host! 🎊

We are very excited to announce that Caitlin Clarkson Pereira has joined the team, and we couldn’t be more excited about running with this new dynamic in the new year!

Caitlin brings incredible experience and a unique background to the show, having run for public office previously, coupled with her visibility as a staunch and outspoken activist for gun safety in the state of Connecticut and across the country, a featured opinion writer with the Hartford Courant, doting mom, and tireless fighter. Basically Superwoman with pink streaks.

New episode coming later today! So far, so good! 🍊 🚀

So long, 2019! Hellooooo 2020! 🎉

This was a pretty good year for us, and for Connecticut! Starting with democratic majorities in both chambers of the legislature, an entirely blue congressional delegation in Washington DC, a governor who was elected as a Democrat 😬, we were able to see paid family medical leave passed, the state minimum wage rise, plastic bags ostensibly gone, renewable energy made a priority, three critical gun safety and safe storage laws passed that will save lives, and promising financial indicators that show Connecticut entering a much healthier phase thanks to prudent strategies and smart investment.

Over here, we started a podcast and produced 14 episodes with a variety of wonderful guests talking about a variety of relevant topics. Two former union organizers, one of whom is now a State Senator (State Senator Julie Kushner) while the other is a historian and advocate, Steve Thornton, the head of CT Working Families, Lindsay Farrell, the youngest State Representative in Connecticut, State Representative Raghib Allie-Brennan, Jeremy Stein of Connecticut Against Gun Violence, brilliant professor Greg Golda, instigator and illustrator Marc Moorash of Art Young's Good Morning and so many more!

We have some great guests lined up for January, and some big changes we’ll announce after the New Year.

Celebrate tonight and tomorrow, and then it’s back to work! Let’s have difficult conversations, let’s support the work of folks on the left, let’s push for a moral, just world in policy and in reality. Let’s keep fighting to make sure CT stays blue, and that the 15-flusher in the White House is a one-termer.

Sincere thanks from us to you, our listeners and fans. Onward to 2020!

A very special double-episode to end the year! 👨🏻👩🏼

First, friend of the show Caitlin Clarkson Pereira joins James for a discussion about Connecticut higher education and the new ‘free’ college plan announced by CSCU and about the latest MAGA disciple to climb up from the depths to run for office, Mr. Robert Hyde for Congress. 🤢🤮

The second half is a chat with Pat McCann, atheist activist and leader of the Secular Coalition for Connecticut about doing and being good without gods, and the diminishing role of religion in the lives of Connecticut residents. 6️⃣6️⃣6️⃣

Wherever you find yourself this week, be it with family and friends celebrating the holiday season, or not, a sincere thank you for making Deep Blue CT a part of your routine. We are grateful for it, and look forward to bigger and better things in the year ahead! 🎉🎉

As always, the link below is free and accessible to all, but the podcast can be found wherever other podcasts mingle and loiter. Enjoy, and Happy Festivus! 🎢

Hey, you.

Deep Blue CT is a weekly podcast for those who want to listen to and participate in conversations about progressive ideas, history, and gripe about the debasement of our country, society, and civilization by those in power who are more concerned with wielding or retaining power than with justice.
