The 14th and FINAL interview of Season 2 featuring Erica Woodland is OUT NOW!!! 🌞🙏🏻🙌🏻

This was truly an incredible interview. There is so much to be done in terms of repairing relationships between medical institutions and marginalized folks, increasing mental health access, educating practitioners on their approach with folks who have been disenfranchised by the system, and so much more. But the one thing that must be at the center of all of these movements is healing. There is so much healing to be done from years of pain and trauma passed down for generations.

I’m so grateful for and the work he and NQTTCN are doing to help make these changes happen.

Trailblazer Tuesday 🥸

Today we are featuring gay German s*xologist and early LGBTQ+ rights activist Magnus Hirschfeld.

From a young age, Hirschfield had a fascination with s*x and viewed it as something entirely natural and wholesome. This fascinations me growing agitation with the treatment he saw of gay people led him to found the Scientific Humanitarian Committee in 1897. The strategy was to promote research and education on all s*xual matters; in particular to debunk homophobic prejudice and to present a rational case for the decriminalization of homos*xuality.

Because of the committee and his tireless campaigns against it, in 1898, the German parliament debated the repeal of Paragraph 175 (criminalization of s*x between men). Though they were defeated, the debate put homos*xual equality onto the mainstream political agenda for the first time.

One of the greatest accomplishments of his life was establishing the Institute for Sexual Science in 1919, a space that promoted s*x education, contraception, marriage guidance counseling, advice for gay and transgender people, the treatment and prevention of STI’s, gay law reform, and women’s rights.

Our 13th interview of Season 2 featuring Niambi Ra is OUT NOW!! 🎶💙💚🎵

Niambi shares so much about her journey as recording artist and how that has intertwined with her journey as a q***r woman. One thing that really stuck with me though is this quote she made, which really hit home the theme for the season. We as q***r people are surrounded by so many negatives because of how the world still treats many of us. Sometimes we just have to actively remind ourselves about what is working. Surround ourselves with people who affirm us. We need to actively seek that joy so that the generations to come can continuously be inspired and make the change we ultimately wish to see.

Trailblazer Tuesday 🎙

Today we are featuring blues singer, pianist, and gender-bending entertainer Gladys Bentley.

Bentley’s career skyrocketed when she appeared at Harry Hansberry's Clam House in New York in the 1920s, as a Black, le***an, cross-dressing performer. She additionally headlined in the early 1930s at Harlem's Ubangi Club, where she was backed up by a chorus line of drag queens.

She dressed in men's clothes (including her signature: tuxedo and top hat), played piano, and sang her own raunchy lyrics to popular tunes of the day in a deep, growling voice while flirting with women in the audience. Gladys spent much of her life receiving criticism for dressing in “men’s clothing” but, she continued to be brave and paved the way for many LGBTQ+ folks for decades to come.

According to a 2019 New York Times article, Gladys was “Harlem’s most famous le***an” in the 1930s and among the best-known Black entertainers in the United States.

Our 11th interview of Season 2 featuring Marla Louissaint is OUT NOW!! ❤️❤️

Marla drops countless nuggets of incredible wisdom throughout this episode. But one thing that really stuck with me is the necessity of knowing yourself, knowing what you stand for, so you can show up and do the work necessary to create change in the world. You have to be intentional with the work you do and how you do it. It’s not all reading and conversing. It has to be active. It’s a fight that requires everyone in their own spaces to pull up for black lives and combat each area that systemic racism persists in.

Trailblazer Tuesday 🎙

Today we are featuring drag king and q***r activist Stormie DeLarverie.

Stormie is widely known to have been the person to throw the first punch at Stonewall. She was the only “male impersonator”—while the rest of the cast were all men who were in drag—in the Jewel Box R***e, the period’s only racially integrated drag troupe. She not only appeared in traditional male attire onstage but wore it out in her day to day life.

In the period after Stonewall, her girlfriend who was a dancer passed away, and she left the entertainment business. She worked as a bodyguard for rite families during the days and a bouncer for le***an bars at night.

She had no tolerance for what she called “ugly,” meaning rudeness, bullying, or behavior that was otherwise intolerant of her “baby girls” at the bars she was protecting.

Our 10th interview of the season featuring Aneesh Sheth is OUT NOW!!!💕🤍💙

Aneesh and I talk so much, this episode, about the change that has happened amongst artists this past year. So many of us have found power in taking charge of and creating our own stories as opposed to waiting for powers—that don’t always look out for us—to. We look around ourselves and see the role models we for so long we’re unable to find. We are the inspiration and the change we have been needing to see. Aneesh is truly an outstanding guest, and I was so honored to chat about so many of these things with her 👑💕

Today we are featuring feminist filmmaker and pioneer of Q***r Cinema, Barbara Hammer.

In the early 1970s Hammer studied film at San Francisco State University. She was inspired to make experimental films about her personal life. After coming out as a le***an she “took off on a motorcycle with a super-8 camera” and in 1974 filmed Dyketactics, widely considered to be one of the first le***an films.

Hammer sought to deconstruct and disempower the narratives and structures that oppress women in general and le***ans in particular. From her earliest experimental work, her films are playfully and relentlessly challenging of accepted norms and taboos.

Today we are featuring LGBTQ+ activist, Edith Windsor, whose landmark case led the Supreme Court to grant same-s*x couples federal recognition for the first time and rights to a host of federal benefits.

Edie, as her friends called her, was a well-known figure in New York gay and le***an social circles. She had a forty-plus-year relationship with her partner and eventual wife, Thea Spyer, whom she married in 2007 in Canada, where same-s*x marriage was legal. When Spyer died, in 2009, Windsor’s inheritance from her partner was taxed three hundred and sixty-three thousand dollars by the IRS, because DOMA prevented Windsor from taking advantage of the marital tax deduction available to all straight couples. Windsor wouldn’t have it. She decided to sue the federal government.

Jack was born in 1939, and often recounted the difficulty of growing up as a precocious gay boy of mixed Jewish and Italian ancestry in a rough and almost exclusively Italian South Philadelphia neighborhood. It was during the late 1950’s during Jack’s time at college that he began organizing the Miss All-America Camp Beauty Pageant. Flawless Sabrina who was the drag persona Jack conceived at 19 was a pushy Jewish grandmother who would emcee the shows without making the other contestants feel threatened.

As q***r historian High Ryan chronicled, for a time, Flawless/Jack was perhaps the largest employer of q***r people in the U.S. not only that but she continued throughout her life to advocate tirelessly for artists, q***r people, and children

🏛

Today we are featuring American Civil Rights Activist, adviser to Martin Luther King Jr., and the main organizer of the March on Washington in 1963, Bayard Rustin.

Born on 17 March 1912, Rustin was one of 12 children raised by his grandparents, Janifer and Julia Rustin, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Rustin’s life-long commitment to nonviolence began with his Quaker upbringing and the influence of his grandmother.

His non-violent way of protesting led him from the Young Communist League, to the proposed 1941 March on Washington, to being a conscientious objector of WWII, to studying Ghandian philosophy in India, to eventually being a key advisor to Dr. King for the Montogomery Bus Boycott. He taught King about Gandhi's philosophy of non-violent resistance and advised him on the tactics of civil disobedience.

Rustin loved his life as an out and proud gay man which unfortunately forced him to do most of his work behind the scenes. In the 1980s, he became a public advocate on behalf of gay causes, speaking at events as an activist and supporter of human rights.

👑

Today we are featuring American socialite, chef, and prohibition-era entrepreneur Lucy Hicks Anderson 👒

Growing up in Kentucky, Lucy knew from a very young age that she was a girl. At a time when the word “transgender” didn’t exist, her parents sought advice from a local physician. Incredibly, the doctor recommended they raise Lucy as a girl, and so they did.

After meeting her first husband, Lucy moved to Oxnard where she quickly became vital to the community. She worked as a nanny and chef, won awards for her cooking, and had a talent for preparing and hosting lavish dinner parties for the wealthy families in town. When she saved up enough money, she purchased a boarding house where she ran a successful brothel and speakeasy. Her good standing in the community made it easy for her to run her illegal business.

It wasn’t until there was a venereal disease outbreak in the Navy that was traced back to her brothel, that things got difficult. The doctor insisted on examine all the women who worked there, including Anderson. He went public and Anderson was charged for “lying” on her marriage license and fraud for receiving money as the wife of a soldier. Anderson became the first trans woman to defend her identity in court.
