Justice Department Finds Unconstitutional Conditions in Georgia Prisons

The Justice Department announced today its findings that conditions of confinement in Georgia’s prisons violate the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution.

“Our findings report lays bare the horrific and inhumane conditions that people are confined to inside Georgia’s state prison system,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Our statewide investigation exposes long-standing, systemic violations stemming from complete indifference and disregard to the safety and security of people Georgia holds in its prisons. People are assaulted stabbed, r***d and killed or left to languish inside facilities that are woefully understaffed. Inmates are maimed and tortured, relegated to an existence of fear, filth and not so benign neglect. These dangerous conditions not only harm the people Georgia incarcerates — it places prison employees and the broader community at risk. The Justice Department is committed to using its authority to bring about humane conditions of confinement that are consistent with contemporary standards of decency and respect for basic human dignity.”

They are incompetent. That’s the truth of the matter. We need to think of alternative sentencing so these nonviolent, victimless criminals aren’t overpopulating the prisons. The infrastructure is only one of the issues. There’s also the issue of the corrupt officers who are truly the ones contributing to this. When you have officers who are gang members inside the prison, then the gangs will be running things.

Georgia Department of Corrections, senators discuss prison violence, rise of drones delivering drugs, cell phones, weapons to inmates.

I had the blessing of attending the “Gospel Explosion 2024” at Dooly State Prison tonight. It was such a wonderful night of worship. You could really feel the Lord in there tonight. The prison band and choir performed. So much talent inside those walls. The warden was kind and said some really positive things. Of course there will always be one or two miserable and nasty officers. I just ignored them. They are part of the problem on the inside.

They also fed us and it was delicious. It was fun to see the guys enjoying their families and having a decent meal. There was a young man who had just turned 18. That really broke my heart. The hardest part was leaving because you know how hard it is for them on a daily basis. It started at 4:30 and we didn’t leave until after 9. Most had not spent a Saturday evening with loved ones in years. It’s the little things we take for granted like eating a cupcake or walking outside on a warm summer night. God bless them all and keep them safe.

A Chamblee, Georgia police officer has been arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and charged with two counts of distribution of child sexual material.

Lieutenant Roy Collar has made headlines before after being shot in the head during a traffic stop in 2022. He recovered and went back to work with the agency.

The GBI said they received a tip from the Cyber Tipleline Report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding the possible online possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material.

The investigation takes time as agents have to prove who the IP address or device used to access the material belong to and prove who the person was using it at the specific time the images were shared/downloaded or both.

The GBI said Chamblee Police Department helped them during the investigation. Typically, Homeland Security is involved in the investigation and ex*****on of a search warrant. Their agency wasn’t specifically mentioned.

Collar was arrested on Monday and taken to the Paulding County Jail.
