I Was Born With a Life-Threatening Illness

"On my 2nd birthday, I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. My family was told I wouldn’t live past my 20’s and had to be hospitalized multiple times, I almost always didn't feel good. My chest felt tight and my sinuses are jacked up from the overproduction of thick mucus. You see it’s a genetic disease and both parents have to carry the gene for the child to have a chance at getting CF. It affects every aspect of our lives.. from having children of our own to straight up just shutting our organs down. It’s a scary disease and half the time I just look tired you can’t really always tell that I truly have a disease... my family has always been very supportive and have helped me through everything I’ve dealt with so far. I try to be good at taking my medicines and doing all my treatments but sometimes it’s hard. And I can’t even meet people who have the disease because if we come within 6 feet of each other we run the risk of making each other so much sicker. So for now, I am just trying my best to be as healthy and happy as I can."

My OCD Is Different To Other People

"Some of you are probably like me, living with a condition called OCD. You have to make sure everything is tidy and clean and everything is always organised. My OCD is different, I don't even know if I should call it OCD. It all started at the age of 8. I am right-handed so I used my right side for everything. I would have to step on cracks in the pavement with my right foot, I would have to grab things with my right hand. When I was 9 I had a pencil and a pen on my desk in school. They weren't lined up evenly so I lined them up using both my hands. It then felt like I was leaving out my left hand and just using my right hand for everything. I had to use the same amount of seconds touching something on both hands. If one thing was cold and I touched it I would have to touch it with the other hand for the same amount of seconds. This really started to affect my life and I couldn't do anything without making it even on both sides of my body. I still struggle with my OCD a lot and it makes me look weird especially when it comes to the cracks in the pavement."

"I'm Laci and when I was 3 years old I was at my parent's house and I kept spacing out until I collapsed. I woke up in the car but everything was spinning ad sound faded out before I seized once more. My dad held my limp body in his arms then once he told the doctor I collapsed, I was rushed into a room. I had IVs placed in my arm and was watching Strawberry Shortcake but then seized my last time. The doctors immediately gave me Anti-Seizure medication. The next day, I was waking up and the doctor went into the room to tell the diagnosis. The neurologist said these exact words, "You're daughter has epilepsy." My parents started crying but I didn't know about my disorder at the time. On February 11 of 2016, I came home from school but it wasn't a normal Thursday. I went to bed after taking the last dose of my medication. (doctors were leaning me off at the time) But on the same night at 11 PM, my cat ran back and for to my mom but this seizure was different instead of spacing out it was a grandma seizure. I was rushed to the hospital then the doctors put me on medication. Now I am 15 years old and I've been improving with my learning disabilities. I still have epilepsy but I am a fighter."

I Have Arthritis But I’m Just a Kid

"My name is Gray. Growing up I was a pretty normal kid. I looked up to my older brother, I ran, and I played sports. I loved going to school and wouldn’t miss it for the world. I was perfectly healthy. Everything was going amazing. But, on my tenth Christmas Eve in 2015, I woke up and saw a big rash between my legs. I didn’t think it was a huge deal. So I went and showed my mom. My mom was confused at the sight of the rash. It wasn’t hives, and it wasn’t just red it was red with a few bumps. My mom decided it would be best to check my temperature. I also had the biggest fewer that I have ever had as probably will have In my life. It took a few hours for me to feel sick. The next day I never left my room and didn’t open up presents until four days after Christmas. One week later when it wasn’t getting better my mom took me to the walk-In clinic. We waited for eight hours!! I had blood work done for the first time and then was told to go to the local children’s hospital. Three days later we went to the children’s hospital. They had no clue what was going on so they made me stay overnight. That one night turned into four days! I had check-ups every day and every day I was poked with multiple needles. That was the worst part. On the third day, they discovered that I had juvenile arthritis. The fourth day I got to go home. The next few months were painful I would wake up crying every night in pain. I had to go to my doctor every two weeks, to make sure it wasn’t getting worse. I was also put on medicine that made my face huge! But, luckily for me, my pain went away. But, most children with arthritis don’t get to experience not feeling the pain anymore. I go camping every year to meet other children like me. At the camp, we get to laugh, learn, and even meet celebrities! I walk and raise money every year for the arthritis society. I still have a checkup but they are a year apart now! That’s my story"

I Am Blind But That Does Not Stop Me

I am 11 years old right now, and my life is pretty good. But it wasn’t always so easy. When I was only a year old, I was diagnosed with osteopetrosis, A disease where the bones hearted and start to break. I was in the hospital for a very long time. Until one day, my mom and dad came to visit me and the doctors told them I wouldn’t make it. my parents were obviously devastated by this news. My mom started praying for me. She prayed every day for the entire time I was in the hospital. Finally, when I was two years old and about to die, the doctors told my parents that they could do a transplant on me. The transplant cured the disease, but one of the bones had crushed my optic nerve which is the nerve in your eyes that you use to see. And that’s how I ended up blind. My mom believes that her praying is the reason I made it. And to this day, she still believes it. And honestly, I do too. Nine years have passed since then, and my life is relatively normal. I don’t get bullied at school surprisingly, I fit in with the other kids, and I do things that a normal kid does. I even practice musical instruments, and I am in band class with some other kids. I wrote this to show that people with disabilities can do just as much as normal people, and to show you that if you pray for something, and truly wants it to happen, then it will.

Did I Do Something To Deserve This?

"One day when I was 12, I started to feel off. I was tired, my chest hurt and my body ached. My mom saw my pale face and knew something was wrong. She said she was taking me to the hospital. I didn't want to go, I thought it would be a waste of time. As it turned out, it definitely wasn't. My heart was beating at a rate of 150 when I got there, which is super fast. Turns out I had hyperthyroidism, a condition that affects how the thyroid works. And my thyroid levels were very low. I was hospitalized, given a heart x-ray and then was able to go home the next day. I had to take medicine four times a day and had to stay in bed all day. I felt irritated and lashed out at everyone, even my mom. I felt bad about that. I just thought I had done something wrong. I thought this was some punishment from God or something. I felt stupid for complaining, people had it way worse than me, why was I whining? Eventually, I told my mom how I felt. She told me that sometimes things like this happen, and it's normal to feel like I did. She told me that the things that happen to me aren't a punishment for anything, sometimes it just happens to even good people, and that eventually, it will get better. I felt a lot better after that. As soon I stopped blaming myself for something uncontrollable, I became happier and more positive. I still struggle with those thoughts now, but whenever I feel like I have my family to reassure me and help me through it."

Pretty Nails or More Scars?

"Living with self-harm disorder is hard enough on its own. But when it gets so bad that you can't have long nails, because you'll just scratch yourself until you bleed? That's a whole another level. And it's the level that I have been living with for the past 7 years. It all started when I was eight. When my mental disorder got worse. And I had to switch between 6 different psychologists. That meant dropping out of school, missing lessons and even more bullying. I got called a slacker, a du***ss and things even worse. And you can picture how my arms, legs and even torso looked like. Open wounds, bandages and scars were so common to see. Now it's getting a bit better but I still need to keep my nails short and in the best case scenario bandage my arms before I go to school or even after waking up. Unfortunately, the scars stay. Nowadays my skin looks like it was whited out at some places. But I try to not let it discourage me, all I want in life is to be normal and I hope one day, my scars will completely heal."

My Battle With Epilepsy

"I got epilepsy when I was six years old. It was an effect from meningitis, we had just moved into a new house in the countryside, me, mom, dad and my two sisters. We had just moved in, and the beds weren't set up so we slept on the floor on a mattress. In the middle of the night my dad noticed me getting up like a zombie from the grave, I took both of my parents blankets and started "comparing" them moving them up and down next to each other. Dad thought this was odd, but the next thing he saw was me having a full-on seizure laying down on the mattress shaking and drooling. Mom called the ambulance and I went to the hospital, after many seizures and tests they told us: your daughter had several epileptic seizures. I went to the hospital several times a month for EEG:s and appointments with a neurologist. I have had several MRI:s, neurologist appointments and EEG:s. I recently had a week-long video EEG, monitoring me with cameras and an EEG hat, it was long and draining. I have had a PET scan and many neuropsychologists appointments. Now we are doing everything we can to get rid of it so I could live easier. I am now 15 and have had so many seizures I can't remember, I also lost all of my memory at six years old because of the seizures."

I Was Bullied Because I Had Dyslexia

"When I was little my parents didn't know that I had dyslexia, they thought I was just a normal "kid" at the time. Probably in when I got to fifth grade my parents found out that I was dyslexic, but they weren't really shocked for it though since they also had dyslexia and also other problems, but to go with the story for the title pretty much. I got bullied for being dyslexic because people thought it was a bad thing and I would never proceed in life because I would pretty much be "autistic" to them. Most of the time I would be harassed for being dyslexic and I don't know why people did this to me. I mean at the moment I am still in high school, I am pretty much a sophomore and I am in Special Ed, which pretty much (Special Education) and the system for what it means it's pretty much for people who have disabilities like for mine dyslexia, ADHD, and so on. For a while, things changed when I went to high school for freshman year. I mean I still got bullied for being "special" but over the time it has stopped just for maybe a little bit and now this year it's not that bad I just ignore it to be honest. From today I have been getting better with my dyslexia, I mean I still have problems but I'm still getting there. One last thing, please don't ever bully anyone for their disability like down syndrome, ADHD or others because that can affect them badly because they are still human."

Being Autistic is Way Different Than You Think

"As a baby, I wouldn't be able to touch anything without crying. I would sleep way more than a normal baby would and I was extremely sensitive to EVERYTHING. It was when I turned 1-year old that I was diagnosed with Autism, specifically Asperger. My parents were heartbroken but they tried to their best to help me, my mom found a therapist who helped me be less sensitive. She would get a big bucket and put some toys in it and fill it with shaving cream. It made me want to play with it and I didn't cry if I found the toys and just smear it everywhere. I eventually started touching more things. But the worst thing that started happening was my anger issues. I would kick, scream and hit. I even went to the hospital for a few weeks to keep me safe. But nothing helped. When I moved to Maryland, I started getting worse and worse. All the doctors would do was feed me more meds. Now I have to take about 10 pills a day. It's been a really long road but I am getting better, I go to a private school and have speech therapy every week. My goal in life is to be a surgeon and I hope one day I can achieve my dreams and show people that even though I have autism, I am just like anyone else."

Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome is Real

I was diagnosed with CRPS in early August. CRPS, or chronic regional pain syndrome, is a condition where the brain believes you are still injured when you’re not. Your brain puts you through endless pain and suddenly you’re aware of every detail in your affected limb/area. It’s a constant battle with your brain, you want to do things but you can’t because you end up in bed for the next week or so. CRPS also made my hearing increase so now, I can barely stand loud or high pitched noises. Random noises will trigger my CRPS and cause great discomfort. However, because it is considered an invisible illness there is no psychical proof except a doctors diagnosis and there is no cure.
It may sound stupid but everything in my life, faded to grey, it became a soulless routine; go to school on Monday, get pushed around, go home, text my best friend, go to school on Tuesday, something bad happens, go home early, stay home the rest of the week, repeat. I hated it. I hate CRPS. It made me feel isolated and very alone but slowly, with the love and support from my friends and parents, I have come to accept that I have this illness. I know I will beat it and I have the courage to keep fighting. So I hope that my story brings more awareness to this invisible illness as many people do not know what CRPS is."

I Was Diagnosed With Cancer At 5 Years Old

"When I was five years old, I moved from Puerto Rico to Florida. My parents dropped me and my brother off at school and then they when to go get breakfast when all of a sudden they get a call from my school. My parents barely spoke English but they understood that I did not feel good I felt a sharp pain in my arm. My parents rushed me to the nearest hospital. After a couple scans and tests, the doctor came with a very worried face and said: “your daughter has Osteosarcoma its a type of cancer that is very rare for a kid her age” I was confused I did not understand what he had said but all I knew was it was bad. My mom and dad started crying I usually never see my dad cry. The next year including holidays was doctor, nurse, medicine, throw up, go home for 2 days, deal with being bald, and repeat. That changed when they decided to amputate my arm. They took away my left arm. I was trying to deal with all the medical staff and then my surgery. At that point, everything was a mess. Until I got to go back to school and everything started to go down the right road. Now I have grown decently big on Social Media. And I am working with getting a prosthetic. This story is to inspire you that anything is possible."
