Teaching Tuesday! Did you know that dandelions are medicinal? High in vitamins and minerals, this little "w**d" is great for the digestive system. High in vitamins A, C and K and substantial amounts of minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium.
The roots contain a soluble fiber called Inulin which supports the growth of the good gut bacteria, supporting the digestive system. Dandelion is full of antioxidants, helps fight inflammation, may help manage blood sugar levels, may lower cholesterol and triglycerides and help manage blood pressure. It may promote liver health, is an anti-cancer, helps with weight loss, boost immune system, promote bone health and can be used topically as a skin treatment.
Many people make various food dishes using dandelions including, dandelion jelly, syrup, (both of which taste similar to honey!), they cook the flowers Breaded and fried. The roots can be used as tea or added to coffee. The leaves are a great addition to salads. The plants around us are amazing and loaded with various nutritional and medicinal properties! To learn more, make sure you sign up for the Class this Saturday! I'll teach you how to use various herbs, where to find them, and how to prepare them! Hope to see you there!

Teaching Tuesday: I know I'm late (again) posting, but this one has been pretty heavy on my mind lately because not only is it personal but also, I strongly feel it embodies all the reasons my journey has brought me here to do exactly what I'm doing. So that being said, it is so important to me that I do it with with love, compassion and openness to your needs. Constant growth, knowledge and experience with herbs has allowed me to be in this place and I am so very thankful I am.
It's all over the news the last several weeks/months, there is an increasing shortage happening with prescription (and OTC) medications. The list of medications affected is growing alarmingly fast. While there may be alternative prescription medications available, those often come with risk and side effects. Your doctor chose the medication you're on because it was the best fit for your needs with the least complications and would manage the issue appropriately. But, what if that medication suddenly were no longer available to you? What if the alternatives available made you sick or didn't manage your illness well? Or meant you had to stop taking other medications that contraindicate? What if there were no alternative prescription for you? Do you know how to manage your blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, autoimmune disease, etc., without it? Are you prepared if something were to happen and you could no longer get your medicine? Have you had these conversations with your doctor? What if your child became ill and you couldn't get over the counter meds or prescriptions for them?
The amount of people I personally know who take daily perscriptions and would be affected by this scenario is staggering. The intent of these teaching Tuesday posts is to empower you and bring you knowledge of the things provided by nature to heal us. Is that enough though? With what's going on in our world around us, I strongly believe that needs to go a step further and the discussion needs to become greater so that you know, without a doubt , without hesitation, how to keep yourself and your family healthy, how to treat colds and illness naturally and what to do if you suddenly can't get the medicine you're dependent upon. Quite frankly, it's not a what if scenario, I'm afraid it's a when, scenario. So tell me what you need to learn. Help me help you, each as individuals following this page and as a group. I can provide all the content in the world but it's value is nothing if it's not what you need to hear. Want content on specific topics? Tell me! Want hands on classes? Tell me! This is your chance to learn, create sustainability, be prepared and to help not only your own family but others in your circle. You just have to tell me what you need to get started. Have specific questions or needs you'd rather discuss privately, I'll absolutely do consultations, just reach out. My ambition is to empower others, to bring them resources and knowledge and to help them make good decisions. The challenge in that is getting people to see the need before that need becomes desperation. Don't wait. Whether you learn here or elsewhere, don't wait.
Please engage and leave your thoughts, comments, needs, wants in the comments. Help me help you. There is nothing I want more than to do that in every way I possibly can.

It's "pretend" Teaching Tuesday (on wednesday). Today's topic is interactive and requires participation, so grab a jacket (since mother nature can't decide if it's gonna be 75 degrees or 35 degrees) and head to your yard. This week I want to challenge you to find one or two of the "w**ds" we've talked about the last several weeks. Or if you find some we haven't discussed, post a pic and let's discuss it! As a re-cap if you scroll down the post feed on our page. You'll find purple dead nettle, mullein, plantain, etc. The things growing right in front of you are often the most beneficial herbs for those common ailments. Have questions about using them, Storing them or how to properly ID, let me know. I can't wait to see what you find!

*Fun fact: if you have an IPhone there's a handy dandy plant identification feature built right into your camera (for free!) When you take a photo, then open the image you just took and swipe up from the bottomon the image. Click "look up" and the ap will give you identification and links to additional information. Always search images and additional info online to compare plant structure and make sure you are properly identifying.

It's Teaching Tuesday again! This week's herb is Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus). (A.K.A. "nature's toilet paper). Mullein is often confused with Lambs ear, but there are several differences when identifying the plant. Mullein grows in a "rosette" pattern with thick, wide, fizzy leaves. While lambs ear grows in upward branches of pointed, narrow, fuzzy leaves. Both plants are a muted light green color and in full maturity, Mullein puts on large stocks that produce clusters of yellow blooms in late Summer.
Mullein contains high levels of antioxidants, vitamin C, saponins, glycocides, Flavonoids and minerals. Traditionally it's been used to treat digestive issues, respiratory illness and can be used topically for burns and wounds. Mullein has historically been used in treating Athsma, pulmonary disease, inflammation, diarrhea, coughs and migraines.
Common forms of use of the plant include crushing up the leaves as a pultice for wounds, adding the herb into creams or lotions. For lung and respiratory health, the herb can be used as a tea or by smoking the herb. For digestive issues it is most commonly consumed as a tea or in tincture form. There is very little human research that has been done on Mullein. Like a lot of herbs, research and clinical studies are few and far between, however, there is a lot of information available out there on people who have had great success using this herb. There are no known contraindications of mullein and the herb is deemed generally safe with little risk of adverse reactions or affects.
Mullein can be found throughout the United States in the wild. Please note: if you are foraging any kind of herbs or mushrooms, please use caution removing plants from side ditches, along roadways or along farm field edges. These areas are exposed to vehicle exhause, tar, chemicals, herbicides and pesticides that can be concentrated at higher levels within the plant. It's highly recommended you take plant from forested areas away from roadways and ditches. Never take more than you'll use and always be mindful about sustainably and future growth of the plant or reseeding. And as always, the information within this post is for informational purposes only and should not be used as medical or health advice. Always seek the advice of a health care provider before starting and Herbal supplements and do your own research. This information is not intended to treat, cure, prevent or diagnose any disease or illness.

Friendly FYI: Lillies are extremely toxic to cats and dogs and can lead to irreversable kidney damage. Lilly is a popular Easter flower often given traditionally as a gift. Please keep these plants away from pets. If they ingest any part of the plant (including licking pollen that may get on their fur) the first sign of sickness is vomiting, diarrhea, followed by lack of appetite, lethargy and excessive drooling. The time it takes for irreversable kidney damage is within 12-24 hours. If your pet displays any of these symptoms and you suspect they may have gotten into lillies. Seek immediate veterinary care.
