Bionic dolphin skin propeller slashes hundreds of tonnes of emissions⚓⬇️
A new propeller created by the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE) coated with a skin mimicking that of a dolphin holds the promise of significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions in large cargo ships.
For over a century, scientists and engineers have looked at the dolphin as a model for building fast, maneuverable watercraft. After all, when you have an animal that can slip so easily through the water and leap into the air as if it doesn't care which medium it's in, it's a pretty good target for imitation.
The problem is that a dolphin shouldn't be able to swim like that. The drag is too much and a dolphin's muscles are pound for pound about as strong as a human athlete, so the animal shouldn't be able to reach the speeds it does. Up until the Second World War, this was a famous paradox, known as 'Gray's Paradox.'

Then engineers started to notice things. For example, if you watch seals and dolphins swimming together in a phosphorescent night sea, the lit plankton motes move around the seals in turbulent chaos, while they slide over the dolphins in straight lines. The culprit is the dolphin's remarkable skin.
Put simply, dolphin skin has a flexible microstructure that, combined with mucus excretions, is able to alter itself as Flipper swims at different speeds. At high speeds, the skin generates a very thin layer of turbulence. This layer is almost frictionless, allowing the water around the dolphin to simply slide over in what is called laminar flow.

Today, laminar flow is used in both watercraft and aircraft as a means of reducing drag and increasing speed. Now, NIMTE is applying the principle to ship propellers. Its "bionic dolphin skin" is applied to a conventional propeller and isn't exactly like that of a dolphin, which is much more complex. Instead, the coating is made of liquid-like dynamic interfacial materials and a flexible microstructure measuring between 0.1 and 0.2 mm. This reduces shear force with the water and improves propeller efficiency.
Working with COSCO SHIPPING Energy Transportation, NIMTE carried out tests of the bionic skin propellers on a very large crude carrier (VLCC) with a tonnage of 300,000 tonnes.
In test voyages over 200 days covering over 35,000 nautical miles (40,000 miles, 65,000 km) between Chinese coastal ports and major Middle Eastern ports, the propellers produced a 2% savings in fuel consumption for the crude carrier. The researchers estimate it would cost US$20,000 to place the bionic dolphin skin over a propeller, which would deliver cost savings of over $140,000 a year while cutting CO2 emissions by more than 900 tonnes.

Recently, humpback whales have been seen feeding close to shore from Maine to Massachusetts. In areas where baitfish are thick, humpback whales will gladly take advantage of the easy meal and may have little regard for what is on the surface, including boats. When feeding, humpback whales can be unpredictable and active at the surface. Boaters are advised to steer clear of areas where whales are actively feeding to avoid entangling or colliding with a massive 80,000-pound whale as it rapidly surfaces.

You can protect your gear and avoid entanglement by not casting or trolling near or around humpback whales or bubble clouds. If a bubble cloud appears while you’re fishing, pull up your gear, if possible. Humpbacks create bubble clouds to corral their prey and then lunge through the center to swallow the small fish.

A collision with a vessel or entanglement in fishing lines can cause serious injuries to the whale and sometimes be fatal. Collisions with whales have also thrown boaters from vessels and caused serious injuries and even death to people. In areas where you suspect whales will be present, slowing to 10 knots helps to prevent collisions by allowing both you and the whale time to react.

🚨 Update: July 22, 10 AM 🚨

Environmental Assessment: GE has hired Arcadis to conduct an environmental assessment. Results will be discussed at the Select Board meeting on Wednesday.

Debris Collection: New debris was found on south shore beaches. Vineyard Wind and GE are actively removing debris. A helicopter search is happening this morning for a larger piece last seen near Madequecham Beach, in collaboration with the Nantucket Harbormaster. Monitoring and debris removal efforts continue around Tuckernuck and Muskeget Islands.

The Blade: 25% of the blade remains upright, with 50% hanging down. The section that fell into the ocean on Thursday, July 18, has been located but not yet retrieved.

Select Board Meetings: An executive session on recovery costs will be held on July 23 at 12 PM, followed by a regular meeting on Wednesday, July 24, at 5:30 PM. GE and Vineyard Wind reps will attend the regular meeting. The public can attend in person or online. For more information on the meeting, visit https://nantucket-ma.gov/192/Select-Board.

Economic Damages: Vineyard Wind is setting up a financial claims process. Details will be shared soon.

The Oceanbird vessel, developed by Wallenius Marine in partnership with Alfa Laval, is the world's largest wind-powered cargo ship. It measures 200 meters in length and can carry up to 7,000 cars. The ship features five telescopic wing sails that can extend up to 105 meters above the water and rotate 360 degrees to harness wind power efficiently. This design aims to reduce carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional ships. The Oceanbird is expected to cross the Atlantic in about 12 days, slightly longer than traditional fuel-powered ships but with significant environmental benefits. The first Oceanbird vessel is set to begin operations in 2024.

It's another Solar Powered Summer!💡

Sustainability and renewable energy have been a generational commitment for us at Bartlett's. Seven acres of our solar arrays power 100% of Farm activity, and the rest is returned to the grid, making renewable energy available to our neighbors. We believe in the mission of handing down a better Earth to the next generation, and renewable energy is just one of the ways we can help accomplish this. 🌞

Bill and I are standing on an important porch here—one that has shaped how all of us experience our country and its natural beauty.

It was on this porch at a house outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming that visionaries Olaus and Mardy Murie seeded a plan for conserving surrounding wildlife that eventually became the Wilderness Act of 1964.

That law established the National Wilderness Preservation System, which authorizes Congress to designate wilderness areas as spaces “where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man.”

As we celebrate this transformational bill’s 60th birthday, let’s thank all those who work in the National Park Service and its sister agencies to preserve our beautiful country from sea to shining sea.
