We had a great brunch event today to round up the Indie Author Summit in Kansas City. Stephen Michael, Executive Producer & VP of Audio, Wolf Entertainment, was there to speak to us about TAKING YOUR BOOK TO HOLLYWOOD!
Wolf Entertainment is celebrated for its exceptional storytelling across television and digital platforms. The company’s extensive portfolio includes “Law & Order”. As Stephen brings Wolf into the podcasting market, and seeks out children’s titles for consideration, he shared with us the most important and valuable aspects of books that producers look for. It was a wonderful opportunity to show Stephen two of my books.
With Charity Reid, the author of The Tale of Aspire and Mr. Smarty Pants, at family-owned Mesob Restaurant, serving delicious Ethiopian and Caribbean food in Kansas City. We have had a great time at the author summit and enjoyed dinner together.
Another person I was excited to meet at the author summit is Lora McClain, best selling author of I Need You To Know, The ABC’s of Black Girl Magic and I Need You To Know, The ABC’s of a Young King’s Greatness children’s coloring books and I Need You to Know Matter story book.
How lovely it was finally to meet Jed Doherty in person and listen to him talk about getting media for your books with confidence at the Indie Author Summit in Kansas City! Jed Doherty is the creator of Reading With Your Kids, a multiple award-winning podcast that promotes reading together as a family. The podcast has featured famous authors like Kate DiCamillo, the international best selling author of “Because of Winn Dixie”, Candace Cameron Bure, author of “Candace Center Stage” and star of “Fuller House”, and Karyn Parson, author of “How High The Moon” and star of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air!

It was fascinating to hear Adam Wallace, New York Times Bestseller List author of the How to Catch series, talk today at the Indie Author Summit in Kansas City.
I had met Adam yesterday as I was having dinner at our hotel with other authors. He came up to our table and my conversation with him went something like this:
Adam: Hi everyone!
Me: Hi! Who are you?
After a collective surprised gasp from all my co-diners, one educated me that Adam was our event keynote speaker and has sold millions of children’s books.
Me: Oops, I didn’t know!
Adam continued chatting with us as if I hadn’t just made a big gaffe. When I found out that he’s from Melbourne, Australia, I excitedly informed him that I had something in common with him, having visited Sydney in April.
Anyway, back to today’s event.
Adam shared with us his amazing journey as an author and provided tips that will hopefully help us all to sell millions of children’s books and be NYT bestselling authors. I opened my phone to take notes, typed the heading, and began to listen. When I glanced back at my notes a little later, my phone, which has always had a mind of its own, had taken it upon itself to type the following under the title (Adam Wallace):
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Honestly, I am not making this up. But that pretty much sums up Adam. He’s an amazing human being who loves to make children laugh, he has a wealth of knowledge, and he is self-effacing and very humorous! What a great experience!
I am so excited to be here on the second day of the Indie Author Summit in Kansas City, Missouri, with Jay Miletsky, Yobe Qui, and others! I am looking forward to a great day of workshops and talks about books and publishing.

In “Chasing Butterflies in the Sunlight, Ronke learns more about the connection between her family and freed slaves who in the 1800s had commenced “new and hopefully better lives in Lagos, many becoming wealthy and elite, and great contributors to the society. They set up schools, and became lawyers, judges, educators, and doctors…”

As I remember my parents and brother this weekend, I also recollect the joys of my childhood, which loosely inspired the writing of the stories in “Chasing Butterflies in the Sunlight”. The book was published in 2020 amidst the horrible pain of losing my parents and brother, and it continues to bring joy to me and to children around the world. Out of ashes, God makes everything beautiful. So today, I choose to commemorate and celebrate the writing and publication of “Chasing Butterflies”.
