Charlie is the family motorglider. We’ve had her since 2017 and have had many adventures together in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Charlie is a 1991 Diamond HK-36R Super Dimona; a touring motorglider that can operate like an airplane from regular airport environments and be able to shut the engine down and soar as a glider. I’ve flown her in the mountain waves of the Eastern Sierra in Nevada and California, and the Culebra and Front Ranges of Colorado and thermal soared in all the states previously mentioned.

Unfortunately, for the last few years, we have not been able to fly her due to a number of factors that I won’t get into here. Now the time had come to bring her home. I watched the weather for the weeks leading up and decided that Wednesday, December 6th was ideal with no precipitation, 10-15 knot tailwinds aloft, and calm surface winds for the entire route. I flew down to Phoenix on the airlines on Tuesday, then hopped a ride to Payson to conduct a functional test flight. I got in 3 takeoffs and landings and checking systems so that I would be ready for the long cross country on the following day.

Everything was in order and the weather held. I arrived Wednesday morning at 7 am at the Payson Airport (KPAN) to frost on the wings. I delayed my takeoff by about 45 minutes to let the sun assist in the frost removal. The first leg was to Animas Airpark south in the Durango Colorado area for a fuel stop. As forecasted, I had the wind at my back and extremely smooth air cruising at 17,500 ft MSL. The landing at Animas Airpark was fun. I had a quick conversation with some locals about Charlie, fueled her up, and I was on my way for the second and final leg.

I climbed south of the San Juan Mountains until I could clear the terrain, then flew basically direct to Longmont, again at 17,500 ft MSL cruising altitude. What a gorgeous day to fly over such extreme terrain! The mountains had some snow but were not yet ready for widespread ski touring. On this leg, I crossed the Sawatch, Mosquito, and Front Ranges then descended into Longmont. We are so happy Charlie is home, and look forward to taking Layla out on her first flight in our motorglider! Stay tuned!

Hiking to Gem Lake was so worth it! It was such a calming and beautiful way to spend the weekend. It’s a 3.4-mile round-trip hike with 830 feet of elevation. The kids did great!

That time I took my then, 1-year-old son, to the Reno Air Races. I’ve been going to the races since I was a kid, so it was special to bring my son. 2023 was the last year for the National Championship Air Races in Reno, and it’s uncertain if they will continue the races elsewhere. I’m glad I have this memory to look back on and cherish.

Getting rad sometimes has its consequences. I crashed into a rock on my mountain bike and fractured my pinky finger. I had surgery last week to drill two pins into my bone to straighten it out. Don’t worry though, I’ll be back soon 😆 Who wants to see the video?
