“Best of 2020” Ratched : marginalised people treating marginalised people

After watching the whole season one of “Ratched”, I had one week to ponder, finally decided to write about it. The last time I felt like this was a couple of years ago, with “Your children is not your children” (Also on Netflix, Taiwanese dystopian mini-series based on a book about Taiwanese parenting culture)

First season contains 8 episodes, rumours of season two in production.

This drama is the prequel of the movie/1962’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. When I know about the the novel that Ratched was based from, I had already approached episode 3. And When I saw “Cuckoo”, I can’t help of displaying an devilish smile, and started to understand why Ratched is needed as the prequel.

Cuckoo, in Chinese is “Du-Juan-Niao”. Perhaps is the bird that could be recognized as one of the heartless animal. I thought this as ludicrous; who is to determine what is heartless? To determine who is full of humanity? Most likely the ones with power and high up on the hierarchy tower, the human. Why Cuckoo is recognised as ‘heartless’? Because Cuckoo would push other eggs in other birds’ nest out, and lay their own eggs in that nest, almost like giving up their children for adoption.

Even though I have not watched “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, while watching Ratched, the feeling of seeing much of the elements/behaviours of Cuckoo is there.

There has not been much of Chinese critic or review of this drama. The ones I have read had used the word ‘bian-tai’(abnormal/creep/pervert) labelling the drama. It’s a feeling of both sadness and ridicule when I read the reviews/critics, “another self-entitled society labelling what they think they know” is what I thought. Very one-dimensional. Nurse Ratched had been labelled “angel of mercy” in the drama, I agree that “angel of mercy” is a much more appropriate title.

In order not to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it, I would only speak of the performance of the actresses/actors, the characters, period-setting and the questions I have about the drama.

New Japanese drama! This is such a fu***ng hilarious (and very silly and stupid) drama about an ex-gangster turn househusband, seeing man doing domestic chores and appreciating the hard work is kind of therapeutic but also knowing it’s hardly going to happen in the real world is sad 😂
