GORKHA PRIDE: Uma Chetry Selected for Indian National Women's Cricket Team

TheDC team sends a warm "Shout Out" to talented Wicketkeeper-Batsman Uma Chetry for being selected to represent India in the upcoming bilateral series against Bangladesh.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced the squads to take on Bangladesh in the three-match T20 and ODI series to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

According to reports, Uma Chetry has been drafted to both the T20 and ODI squads that will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur.

She will be the first player of Gorkha ethnicity to represent India in cricket. Originally from Assam she also became the first cricketer from her state to represent India senior national team.

Hope her success will inspire thousands of other youths, especially the girls to follow their passion.

Rongo Forest village has higher literacy rate compared to West Bengal. In 2011, literacy rate of Rongo Forest village was 79.95 % compared to 76.26 % of West Bengal. In Rongo Forest Male literacy stands at 87.44 % while female literacy rate was 72.56 %.

Establishment of Cinchona Plantation in Rongo:

The establishment of the Cinchona plantation in Rongo can be traced back to the late 1930s when the British colonial government sought to expand Cinchona production in India. The plantation was established in 1938 under the supervision of G.H. Fathergel, who was known as the Rate Saheb, and his assistant Chandra Lal Sharma. The first Cinchona plantings in Rongo were on the land that was previously covered with dense forest. The land was cleared for the purpose of planting Cinchona trees.The first Cinchona plantings were established in Mungpoo in 1862, Munson in 1900, Rongo in 1938, and Latpancher in 1943. The plantation in Rongo covered an area of 4,222 acres and included several villages, including Dagoan and Gairibas. The plantation was located in the far eastern region of Darjeeling and was separated from Bhutan by the Jaldhaka River.
