OUR GOALS

-To foster a supportive literary community on campus and in the greater Bellingham community

-To provide a unique venue for student voices and creativity

-To promote writing and the arts through quarterly readings and events

-To unite visual artists, writers, dramatists and others in the arts community

OUR HISTORY

In 1963, a literary magazine called Synchesis was started on Western's campus. In 1965, its name was changed to Jeopardy. For the next thirty-nine years, Jeopardy accepted and printed submissions from all over the world, including works from Kenneth Rexroth, James Welch, Richard Hugo, Marvin Bell, Robert Creeley, Madeline DeFrees, X.J. Kennedy, Knute Skinner, Richard Brautigan, Charles Bukowski, Joyce Odam, Annie Dillard, Donald Hall, Gary Snyder, Rita Mae Brown, and William Stafford. In 2003, the Student Publications Council voted to make Jeopardy a campus-specific publication, a policy the magazine still maintains. Rather than publishing work from around the world, Jeopardy now serves as a showcase for the Western community, highlighting quality written literary and visual art from students, staff, faculty and alumni. 🗣CALLING ALL WWU WRITERS🗣

Jeopardy’s spring submission period is OPEN and our deadline is quickly approaching! 💐💐

The spring deadline is SUNDAY, MARCH 20th at 11:59PM PST. We accept writing such as fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and blended genre pieces. We also are looking for art submissions including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and design. We look forward to viewing your submissions!

Can't decide what to submit? Check out our mission statement:

"Jeopardy Magazine strives to platform work that is reflective of the wonderful community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni belonging to Western Washington University. We are a student-run undergraduate publication firmly grounded in the accessibility, diversity, and inclusivity of content. Our magazine is both a celebration and a preservation of stories, poetry, essays, art, and multimedia projects that provide ample nourishment at the end of every scholastic year. Beyond just our yearly publication, the Jeopardy team hopes to act as a resource on campus: fielding questions of craft and helping writers grow with the intent of reconnecting with each other in face of the pandemic. The work we receive is a testament to the talent and strength of our campus; a mosaic of pieces to come home to."

Need any writing help? Want to workshop a piece with one of our editors? Come to office hours (available in person at HUM254 or over zoom)!

Hello Western Writers!

In this age of Zoom calls and virtual assignments, the Jeopardy staff wanted to try something new to encourage collaboration and spontaneous creativity. Presenting the Jeopardy Digital Chalkboard! This is a GoogleSlides that can be edited by anyone who clicks the link.

At the top of the chalkboard will be something to inspire you: a prompt, theme, line, image, ect. We encourage everyone to spend a few minutes thinking on this prompt (or disregarding it completely) and add something to the chalkboard. This could be a few lines of poetry, the start of a story, some random words that came to mind, or items from your most recent grocery list (anything really!) Make a masterpiece, better yet, make a mess!

Feel free to incorporate or add onto someone else’s contribution, but please don’t delete someone else’s words. As this is a public document, we ask that everyone use their best judgement and treat each other with respect. Hateful language will not be tolerated and please keep sexual/ violent imagery to appropriate levels. If this becomes an issue, we will have to discontinue the Chalkboard series. We will be posting a link to a fresh chalkboard every week!
