There was no callout for Black fathers to bring their children to the annual Dance Africa street festival in Brooklyn. But there they were, in all of their tender Black masculinity. They had Black children hoisted up on their shoulders, holding their hands and stroking their soft puffs of hair. In tribute to my own father, I photographed some of the fathers with their children as a reminder that Black fathers matter. ⁠

My Black father mattered. I didn't have the physical blood of my father, but the soul tie — the spiritual blood of father and son — was irrefutable. My father adopted me and gave me his name. He raised me and protected me and was present in my life to lead by example — lead me into manhood, lead me into fatherhood.

“Our dreams are only as big as what we’ve been exposed to”

and I decided to launch because we realize that exposure to success creates the idea you can do it. For myself, I had access to so many inspiring, encouraging and motivating people in my life that gave me the vision that I too could be successful. But we also realize being black men, that narrative is intertwined with being a rapper or an athlete. We want to transform that perception. We want to marry the idea that you can be successful and live life the way you dreamt. We want to be part of giving you the tools to do such by exposing the world to successful people in different spheres, and have authentic conversations about what it took. We want to show everyone that you don’t have to work at or become an attorney to be successful, because there’s diversity in success, you just have to have the right access.
