The Ancient Egyptians could buy their way into the afterlife?

Well, not exactly, but the powerful and wealthy had many significant advantages when it came to actually reaching paradise.

In Egyptian belief, when someone died their body had to be preserved as it would still be their body in the underworld, which was almost an exact copy of the mortal world.

Without a body, a person was left to be a formless being for all eternitiy.

Even if a person had the funds and support to be mummified and have a tomb, they still had to pass by several tests to judge their character.

Then face numerous foes, who were as wise as they were terrifying.

These beings offer questions, answer correctly, you move forward, fail and your soul is devoured and removed from existance.

Wealth and power gave certain Egyptians access to better education, as well as magical spells, amulets and other objects believed to assist in the afterlife.

Today,

We're going to take a look at an interesting type of combat from the Ancient Aztecs, the Flower Wars.

These wars weren't like any other wars fought accross the globe, they had rules.

The main goal of these battles was to act as a source of sacrifices, providing each city state enough hearts to offer to the gods without committing to full scale war.

This allowed societies to progress, while appeasing the needs of their hungry and vengeful gods.
