Encounter God in Prayer…Arise and Pray

Lord, I worship you today, even from my place of need. There is nothing that slips your notice in my life. You see it all clearly. I won’t hold back from you now, for you never hold back from me. I enter into the secret chamber of your heart, where I am met with your delight and pleasure. Your glory streams, unyielding, from your presence, and I cannot stay away.

When I listen for your voice, I hear the sweet sound of your gentle whisper. You say that I am hidden in your love and that my voice is like music to your ears. You love to hear my voice! Whenever you hear my heart’s cry, you answer me in loyal love. How could I stay away from such a tender Father? I won’t rely on my own strength or limitations when I have access to the storehouse of your abundant goodness through your presence. You are my sustenance, Lord, and I come running to you today. Nothing could stop me now. I will arise and pray, for you are the God of my great deliverance, and you are my ultimate delight.

I Hear His Whisper...Follow the path of healing.

As I lead you along the pathway of peace, you will find restoration for your brokenness and healing for every wound. I am full of resurrection power. Do you realize that the same Spirit that raised Christ from the grave is alive in you? You have not reached the end of my kindness over your life. What I have done before I will do again, and even more.

What I promised the apostles through Jesus is your inheritance. Look at the wonders that Jesus offered in his lifetime. Look at all of the miracles! And yet, be assured—now is the time for even greater things. Christ declared that through the Spirit at work within you, you will do even more than he accomplished. As he healed, so you will heal. As he led people into eternal freedom, so will you point others toward my everlasting kindness. Follow the path that has been set out before you in accordance with my kingdom ways. When you experience freedom, set others free. When you are healed, release healing to others. You are equipped, and the power of my love will meet you at every juncture.

Oh, Christmas. How we love to dress you up, show you off, and make you into something you’re not. We string twinkle lights and garland, pack our schedules with obligatory cheer, and sing “Silent Night” while the rocks cry out and the whole world rages around us.

If something feels “off” or particularly heavy for you this season, you’re not alone. In the midst of that weight, God may be inviting you back to the heart of the Incarnation.

Emmanuel, God with us.

At the risk of sounding Grinchy…I’m going to give it to you straight. The first Christmas wasn’t pretty. It was gritty as can be, full of shared pain, pressure, and scandal. God stepped into the middle of a story no one would have chosen to do what no one else could.

This is good news for people like us—the ones who know grief, loss, abuse, addiction, shame. God didn’t wait for humanity to clean itself up or deck the halls before he came, and he doesn’t expect you to, either.

God is with us—with you—even now. Here are seven truths to help you remember this Christmas.

No Reason to Fear

When we look at the reasons God gives us to not give in to discouragement or fear, we catch a glorious glimpse of his goodness. He tells us to be strong in his love, to be brave in his presence. There is no reason to let fear overtake us, for God is with us. He is the one who goes with us into every battle. He is our strength, our support, and our constant help.

There truly is no need to let worry paralyze us when we live in the reality of his presence. He does not leave us or abandon us. He does not take breaks, and he never slumbers. He is always aware of what is going on both in and around us. We can be confident in his clarity and encouraged in his ability to save, redeem, and restore. There is nothing that he cannot do. He is the God who splits seas, he is the Defender of the weak, and he is with you and me.

YAHWEH, make your presence known to me. Encourage me in your strength and calm my anxious heart.

I Hear His Whisper…I love to speak to you.

In the silence, I will speak to you. Each morning, come and sit at my feet and learn from the wisdom of eternity. I love to share my heart with you. Many say they follow me but never still their souls to listen to my voice. I wait to speak to you clearly, each day. The task I set before you will bring sweetness and new mercies to your soul.

In the evening hours, come and I will whisper my living words into your spirit. Your night season will be a time of encounter, as my Spirit brings you heaven’s grace and the dew of my presence. Listen carefully, as a lover listens to the beloved. Listen and you will hear my voice and learn my ways.

I am the Shepherd who goes before you, calling you by name, caring for you in love, and leading you in my ways. Now, come and listen for my whisper each day and know that I am your God.

Ascending the Mountains

Let go! As you climb from desert to mountaintop, from the place of your undoing to the place of victory and refreshing breezes, let it all go. With each step you take, leave behind the pain. Forsake the right to be angry. Refuse the self-pity. You’re becoming stronger. You’re beginning to remember who you are.

You weren’t created to remain in the desert. Seasons change, and it’s important to recognize when they do. If you shut your eyes and grit your teeth thinking things will never be different, you’ll miss the beautiful journey to the mountaintops. Open your eyes. Look where he’s led you. Your suffering has made you beautiful because you tucked yourself securely in his love. You are standing in the place of victory, so let your shouts of celebration be heard!

Father, don’t let me get stuck in a mindset of hopelessness or discouragement. Don’t allow me to wallow in the murky waters of defeat. Lead me to the mountains of joy and refreshing as we walk through the archways of trust. Here in your love, I’m becoming stronger, realizing you’ve never left my side.

When Dwight and I said, “I do,” we stepped onto a wild rollercoaster ride that would either make us, break us, or both. Since Dwight came from a family of neglect and emotional abuse with a manic-depressant mother who controlled through her anger and I came from a family of marital infidelity between my mom and my pastor, we found ourselves cycling in loop-to-loop pain.

Believers in messy families (which basically includes everybody who breathes) want to shine God’s light and make a huge Kingdom impact; but what do you do when your triggers tweak your weak and you find yourself needing more than a verse and a prayer to thrive above the snake line?

A marriage can survive a lot of things—but what makes it thrive most is God-hunger.

I know this because I’ve lived it. And this is our story—not of our marriage being perfect, healed, or painless—but how Jesus, my first Husband, showed up in the ruins, rewrote the script, and invited me into a love deeper than human vows can reach...

I Hear His Whisper...Follow through.

Your word has sealed whatever you have vowed to do. Do everything in your power to follow through on it. When the going gets hard, lean into my love for the strength to press on. There is a season to sow and a season to reap, and I am the season keeper. If you are looking for wisdom, you will find it in me. If you have any questions, lay them out without restraint. I will answer you.

Listen to me, child. If you are looking for a way out, you will find it. My loyal lovers know that the easy way is not the same as the right way. Do not look with the eyes of this world that seek a swift solution to discomfort. I am asking you to align with my wisdom that leads you in perfect peace, whatever the condition of the path. Perseverance is a marker of faith in action. When the temptation arises to give up on the good that you set out to do, remember that my unfailing mercy never gives up. Clothe yourself in humility and integrity, and follow my lead as you faithfully fulfill your responsibilities.
