"There should have been universal basic income. There should have been a massive infusion of resources from the federal government that would actually have allowed people to stay home then in a concentrated way." Thank you to Lawrence T. Brown, Director of the Black Butterfly Project for joining us on the latest episode of ContaktWorld: Truth in Health. Lawrence's knowledge and commentary provided our co-hosts with a thought provoking discussion on policies, practices, systems and budgets regarding race and the ongoing pandemic.

Episode 7 is officially live!

What if segregation didn’t actually end? And instead, American cities have become drawn along racial lines – exacerbating economic issues AND fueling the COVID pandemic? Join our hosts Justin S. Beck, Catherine Delcin and Deepti Pahwa, as they speak with Lawrence T. Brown, Director of the Black Butterfly Project. As a group, they’ll discuss the policies, practices, systems and budgets discussed in his new book, “The Black Butterfly: The Harmful Politics of Race and Space in America”. We’ll also hear from Dr. Brian Smedley, an advocate of health equity, whose work is creating opportunities for people of color and undoing the health consequences of racism.

"We’re aiding developing countries like we should – a return to the leadership position that makes us the United States of America. Re-engaging with WHO is important for the long-term health of our globe. We can prioritize America’s health while contributing to people that are less fortunate at the same time. If the United States and other global leaders don’t take steps like this, developing nations will continue to suffer from COVID-19 and other neglected tropical diseases. We need to do more, not less, to help." - Justin S. Beck, ContaktWorld Founder / CEO and co-host of Contakt World: Truth in Health

- Earlier this week we were joined by retired Olympic distance runner, Kemoy Campbell, to learn about his health journey and the importance of listening to your body - especially in the age of a pandemic. Kemoy’s story is a message to all, not just athletes, on how crucial it is to take care of your body at the first sign of distress.

Tune into this week’s episode of ContaktWorld: Truth in Health as co-hosts Justin S. Beck, Deepti Pahwa, and Catherine Delcin are joined by Emmy Award-winning journalist, poet, medical doctor and author, Dr. Seema Yasmin and retired Jamaican Olympic distance runner, Kemoy Campbell. Kemoy’s story serves as a reminder for all competitive athletes to listen to their bodies and allow yourself to slow down if something seems off, especially during the pandemic. This episode also hears from Dr. Yasmin who discusses how dangerous the spread of false information can be across social media platforms, and how users can be mindful of only taking in and sharing stories from accurate sources.

The conversation surrounding COVID-19 has been on 24/7 since the outbreak began, so why aren't we talking more about the well-being of our frontline workers? This week's episode of ContaktWorld: Truth in Health looks to change that. We're joined by emergency room doctor, Dr. Paul Bajwa, and Meliza Rangel, a nurse who tragically lost her father to COVID, to discuss the current impact this pandemic is having on the physical and mental health of our country's frontline workers, and the long-term effects that we need to prepare for. Current statistics show that 1 in 735 Black Americans die from COVID-19, while only 1 in 1,030 white Americans will succumb to the virus. This is a disturbing figure but unfortunately is not surprising. Implicit bias is rampant throughout the healthcare industry and the stereotypes and unconscious attitudes towards minority communities is killing them. The third episode of our podcast, "COVID: Does Race = Risk", discussed the connection between race and privilege within our healthcare system and how the lives of marginalized individuals are being put at a greater risk by those in power.

On this week's episode, we're joined by the incredible E. Oscar Alleyne DrPH MPH, epidemiologist and Chief of Programs and Services for NACCHO. Dr. Alleyne's years of experience in the industry provided us with a thought provoking conversation on how anti-science discourse leads to an overall lack of social responsibility and the need for trust between minority communities and the healthcare industry to achieve broad . We also discussed the top 3 health agency priorities that Dr. Alleyne believes should receive additional funding, including community integration to ensure that every individual's health and safety is taken into account. Thank you to Daniel E. Dawes for joining us on the second episode of Contakt World: Truth in Health. This week’s episode touched on the need for policy makers to be more proactive rather than reactive. Action that is simply “reactive” allows for funding to be provided once a crisis occurs, but financial support is then rescinded once the crisis has been averted. Daniel expressed how policy makers should invest in the equitable distribution of both vaccines and contact tracing in order to ensure that all communities have equal access to these resources.

Thank you to Daniel E. Dawes for joining us on the second episode of Contakt World: Truth in Health! Daniel’s role as the executive director of Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta and co-founder of the Health Equity Leadership and Exchange Network allowed him to share unique insights from the frontline of the healthcare reform movement. A major takeaway from the conversation with Daniel is that policy makers need to be proactive when handling a crisis and continue to provide funding even after a crisis is considered to be over - continuous funding will allow for communities of all socioeconomic backgrounds to receive the necessary funding for things such as testing and contact tracing. Tune in to our second episode - COVID The Great Revealer.

ContaktWorld CEO, Justin Beck, recently spoke to Fox News on how at least three COVID-19 vaccines are confirmed to be safe and effective. The misinformation being presented by companies who cater to ‘anti-vaxxers’ and anti-science rhetoric are the biggest contributing factors to the negative discourse surrounding the vaccines. This podcast looks to be your life raft of protection in the age of disinformation - make sure to tune in for our first episode with Dr. Peter Hotez on December 8th on iHeartRadio.
