Today's album of the day is the newest album by Nothing titled The Great Dismal released just a few weeks ago as of this writing on Relapse Records. After a slight line-up shift, Nothing return with a record that captures the dread of living in the great year of our lord 2020. While the band still retains the shoegazey, 90's alternative rock style that they have been playing, though here, this seems to be on their more heavier style of their playing (not heavy as in metal though, but the tones here are definitely more thicker compared to songs on their other albums). There even is a slight political edge to some of these songs, which is inevitable for anyone who is living in these times that we are. That being said, their is still that emotional vulnerability that has always been present in their music, and that still remains at the forefront. The record really seems to live up to the title as the band seems to be genuinely tired of living life in these modern times (though this does not impact the quality of the music, mind you). Join in on the merry dread as this is the soundtrack to the collapse of our society.

Today's album of the day is this 2017 release titled Forget by the oddity known as Xiu Xiu, released by Polyvinyl Records. This is one of the group's more poppy works, but don't let that facade fool you; this album's themes and content are just as dark as ever. I'm a sucker for contrasts and juxtapositions when it comes to music and story-telling, and Jamie Stewart's madness is on brilliant display here. This is music you can cry too as you groove your way on to the dancefloor in the club (remember those?) as you drink your pain away. Even the humor here is extremely dark when it happens, but it's part of Xiu Xiu's magic. You can find many contemporaries, but they will never come close to this genuine sense of madness.

Today's album of the day is the staggering 1999 release of Times Of Grace by the legendary Neurosis, released on Relapse Records. Of note, Steve Albini engineered this record! This album is what I look for in heavy music that carries emotional weight. When I say this record is heavy, I do not just mean because there are epic riffs throughout, but the perfect combination of music and song structure marred with lyrics that make you feel like heavy stones are being placed on top of your very soul ("Under The Surface" is a great example of a song that does that for me). The version of the album I posted has the audio from the sister album by Tribe Of Neurot simply titled Grace, which is meant to be played simultaneously with this record, mixed in; providing a whole new experience with this record that I didn't get to hear until just recently. If you have not experienced this band, this is where I'd recommend you start!

Today's album of the day is this weird oddity by the No Wave band Mars called The Complete Studio Recordings NYC 1977-1978 that was issued by G3G Records back in 2004. This is what many people could call "punk"; though listening to Mars, I get the feeling that they don't really care what you call them. You can hear this band's evolution throughout this release into what could've been more tighter songwriting; though again, I don't think they ever really cared at all about that. This is what a band sounds like when they just want to have the most fun doing whatever it is that they want to do and having fun doing it. It sounds like this band heard of punk rock and decided they could get away with doing worse in the most "arty" way possible.

Today's album of the day is this staggering 2017 release titled Thin Black Duke by Oxbow, released on Hydra Head Records. It should say something that this record is why Hydra Head Records came back to do limited releases after going dormant. This was a long awaited follow-up to the magnificent The Narcotic Story that came about a little over a decade prior to this record. The wait was well worth it, as there are no weak songs. There is a kind of reward for having the patience to craft and perfect these songs over the many years it took for the band to present these songs as we finally hear them. This record is so well put-together that it's intimidating. There is a story being told here and the music captures this story with a sense of grandiosity and emotional heft that just elevates everything to another level. Eugene S. Robinson's vocal delivery could not be any more on point in how he tells us his story of the Thin Black Duke and his journey of human fallacy. This is the kind of powerful music that stirs souls if you are willing to take it in.

This will be my last Youtube playlist for a while as I take this on hiatus again to get this going as a 2 hour podcast format to make it feel more like a radio thing. This playlist is made up of mostly things I personally like more than newer stuff I've been getting into. Enjoy!

13/11/2020

Today's album of the day is the 2010 release titled My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky by Swans, released on Young God Records (of note, that is Michael Gira's label). The album marked the return of Swans into a whole new era of the band, with a whole new lineup to boot behind M. Gira, though longtime Swan's regular Norman Westberg does return. There really is a cinematic and more pronounced spiritual quality to this music that really begins here compared to the other ears of the band, despite how transcendent the Jarboe-era was (and even with the fact that they put out an album in the 90s during the Jarboe-era called Soundtracks for the Blind). The music here is more in the general area of what people call post-rock, instead being in the industrial-tinged No Wave or post-punk sounds that the band was previously known for; though, that being said, the history of the band's sound is on display in unique ways, while pushing the band's sound simultaneously to new heights. While some people will not think this is the best representation of the band in it's current iteration, this was most assuredly, a very splendid and glorious return.

Today's album of the day is this 2000 release by the USBM band Weakling called Dead As Dreams, originally released on tUMULt records. This is probably my all-time favorite black metal record. This actually came out about a year or more after the band had already broken up. The extremely limited availability of this record is just ridiculous, including the rumors involving where you could even find that, considering just how good this stuff is. This is very emotionally charged, harrowing black metal that doesn't have that whole posturing bu****it found in so many places. You can hear where bands like Deafheaven and Leviathan got their inspiration from this band. There is a post-hardcore sound that seems very apparent here and there in these songs before other black metal bands kinda took hold of that. Someone please find John Gossard and pressure him to have more of this made somehow.

Today's album of the day is the 1985 classic by Killing Joke called Night Time, released on E.G./Polydor Records. This was the album that introduced me to this band back when I was a teenager because of the strength of the song "Love Like Blood" that had strongly fascinated me at the time. The beautiful melodies combined with lean riffing always strikes me at my core of my "soul". This album knows how to work with the interplay of light and darkness that many bands in the post-punk realm come up short on. Though Killing Joke would go on to eventually make more metal influenced records (though the next album more-or less continues the vibe of "Love Like Blood"), you can hear them flirting with heaviness, but in a way done here that still shows the band's punk roots too. This is the album that showcased this band as masterclass musicians who would go on to become the weird juggernauts (looking at you Jaz, with emphasis on the weird part) that would influence so many others to come.

Todays record of the day is this 1983 classic by Rudimentary Peni called Death Church, originally released by Corpus Christi re cords. This is, in my opinion, the greatest punk record ever recorded. Every song on here is mad punk genius. There is also a dark and demented sense of humor here that somehow makes this seems even more grim than it actually is. This record was before things got really weird in the Peni camp (though this is still pretty far out there compared to many other punk records from this time). Steve Albini was correct in assessing that Nick Blinko is one the most genius madmen to ever walk this mortal coil.

Today's album of the day is the masterful 1999 release of The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails on Nothing/Interscope records. I'm gonna be real with y'all here, as I am extremely biased on this opinion, but this is my idea of the greatest record of all-time. This whole record is perfect. Not a song is wasted (including the instrumentals). This whole record tells an amazing story laid out over 23 plus songs (depends more or less on what version you listen too, but still). This represents one of the highest watermarks in music that any artist has ever made. This record will bring you up, down, and all around. I would keep talking about how perfect this record is to me, but I guess y'all have to decide on what you think of this masterpiece yourselves.

Today's album of the day is this 2015 release from the USBM one-man band Leviathan called Scar Sighted, released on Profound Lore Records. This album encapsulates everything I love about black metal in the US, eschewing the pomposity found in European black metal. The misery and dread sounds totally authentic. A true maturation of the sound Wrest has been crafting since The 10th Sub-level Of Su***de with moments of creepy ambiance that he would also be known for in Lurker Of Chalice. This is not music to listen too if you drink alone.

Today's album of the day is the 2009 release of ISIS (the band)'s final album titled Wavering Radiant, released on Ipecac Records. This was the album where this legendary band said that they have achieved all that they could do creatively as a band. This contains their signature post-metal sludge, but you can also hear the strong Tool influence (Adam Jones appears on two tracks). Personally, I was floored by the beauty and magnitude of this release when it first came out. This album is so emotionally charged. These boys should be proud that they made this their final statement as a band.

My album of the day is the 2007 release by Deerhunter titled Cryptograms. Somewhere between hazy shoegaze, experimental alternative rock, and dreamy ambiance, this album is a puzzle waiting for it's listeners to unravel. The highlight here is the title track, but this whole album has an impeccable flow that works really well as a whole. The music really does sound like the album art if that means anything.

Today's album of the day is the 1993 release of Crumb Duck between Stereolab and Nurse With Wound, originally released on Clawfist Records. The story goes that Steven Stapleton (NWW) was contacted to remix some Stereolab material after he had declined to produce for them, claiming they were too much of a rock band. Instead, he remixed and reworked their material under the condition that they couldn't listen to it until the music was released. This release definitely contains elements of both groups, from pulsing electronic, to poppy bits, to noise bits, to really weird, dada-inspired sound collages of samples and musique concrète. This is not an easy listen, but is very much a rewarding listen in it's own right for those who can endure.

My album of the day is this 2017 release by the Japanese caustic noise metal band Endon. This is one of the heaviest, violent, and oddly, beautiful records I have heard. There is so much energy and emotion here throughout. Someone once described vocalist Taichi Nagura as sounding like the tortured and torturer, which I completely back. This whole album is just astounding crazy.

Today's album of the day comes from the Japanese/München, Germany indie band Spirit Fest with the album Mirage Mirage that was released earlier this year on Morr Music Records. The songs and production on this album is gorgeous and lush. I am not a spiritual person, but this music makes me feel closer to that spiritual realm than any religious belief. The lyrics alternate between Japanese and English frequently; and while I do not understand what is being said most of the time, I still feel the weight of this music and the way these songs are sung, making the language barrier irrelevant. This is music that will elevate your soul.

Today's album of the day is the 2003 release called Drink From My Bastard Grail from a band I recently discovered a couple weeks back called 2 by Bukowski. This band has some very strong post-rock leanings that move between caustic noise rock and very icy, ambient-ish passages. These changes in sound seem to occur with one song being aggressive, followed by the next song being more atmospheric. Despite this, everything feels very cohesive and works like movements that brings about certain moods that are tightly planned out and executed. This record all in all, is it's own journey; one that I's recommend taking if you have the time.

I will start leaving daily recommended albums of the day to check out now, which will be done here. I'll start off with this record by (James Chance And) The Contortions titled simply Buy. Moving forward with the unhinged jazz punk mania that was exhibited on the No New York comp, The Contortions have by this time, refined their chaotic sound into something of heft, slick and sleazy; all while maintaining the feeling of the band wanting to kick in your teeth. This particular upload includes the three live cuts from an updated reissue from a spring time 1978 show at CBGBs that perfectly captures their menacing swagger.
