Be aware of your local fireworks schedules!

💥bring outdoor pets inside (even a garage...with fans, radios, and something to do like a chew toy)

💥close window curtains; secure doors and windows; leave on fans, radios, or TV to drown out outside noises; give them something to do (chewing and licking are great stress relieving activities! Bully sticks, Beef Cheek rolls, Kong or WEST PAW stuffed toys, Licki Mats, etc.)

💥update ID and microchip information to make sure it is current.

💥if your dog or cat is extremely fearful, talk to your vet about medically appropriate and safe ways to help sedate them.

💥DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG TO FIREWORK DISPLAYS! Not only is it crowded and hot, but they can not escape the loud noises.

The Fourth of July is coming! Start preparing your dog NOW!

🎆 Check to make sure your dog is wearing a collar with CURRENT identification.
🎆 Find puzzle toys your dogs like to keep them busy (we LOVE WEST PAW !!!)
🎆 Know fireworks don't end on the Fourth. Make sure you take extra care the rest of the summer.
🎆 Watch video ⬇️ for additional tips to prepare your dog's environment.

Every year shelters are bombarded with stray dogs. And those are the lucky ones - some never make it home. Don't be a statistic. Keep your dogs safe!

I'll start!
Clementine = Tater or Tater tot (she looks like a tater tot when she is laying down 😂)

American Kennel Club is more than just a registry of purebred dogs. They are a key resource in all things health and safety for dogs.

Today's AKC service spotlight is AKC Reunite. BEFORE your pet is lost, ask your vet about microchipping. A quick procedure can ensure your pet is returned to you in the event of it getting lost with or without its collar. A lifetime registration in the system is $19.50. This is for ANY dog with a microchip (does not need to be purebred, registered with AKC, or an AKC ReUnite microchip)!

In times of Natural Disaster AKC Reunite steps in to help pet owners safely evacuate and care for their pets. Most emergency shelters are NOT pet friendly, often making owners choose between safety and their pet.

Very interesting. Someone commented "dogs are verbs." Whoa 🤯

Teach your dog the behavior you want. Ignore the undesirable behaviors.

"Dogs don't understand don't, because don't is a concept. Dogs understand DO. They understand behaviours. Create a behaviour that you DO want, so that your dog can be right and you're setting him up for reinforcement. This makes for a much better relationship for you and your dog, and for anybody else who comes in contact with your dog."

Lets talk dog tags. There are 2 types:
1. Required by law
2. Identification

Required by law - There are TWO tags required in my county: rabies and dog license. Both must be current. The rabies tag is tied to your vets office and your dog license. The license can be 1 year, multiple years, or permanent. It also can track back to your address and phone number by the county.

Identification: these are not required by law but are a REALLY good idea. Having current information means it will be MUCH easier for someone who finds your dog to get in contact with you. They also can be SUPER cute. Make sure to buy a new tag when your info changes!

Bad Tags are HILARIOUS and super high quality. They even have a glow in the dark rubber ring around the tag to protect it and make it super visible.

www.PetTags4Less.com is basic, quick, and cheap! Custom, aluminum tags are as low as $2.20, shipped! I usually get them in 3-4 days from ordering. They also have random sales. So stock up!

Positive reinforcement training works. Plain and simple. It is effective AND humane. But I also am a realist. There are punishments, there can be negative reinforcement. But those are dictated by what my dogs find adverse. Do you know what your dog finds negative or a punishment?

Hosley: when the attention is turned off. He HATES to disappoint and wants you to party and be happy he was good.

Clementine: when the food goes away OR a spray bottle comes out. She HATES both of those equally.

* I AM REALISTIC *

(Disclaimer - I am not supporting or promoting using aversives in everyday training - I simply acknowledge that they might appear despite our best intentions to avoid them - such as emergency situations , trainer's error or related to environment. I strive to use Positive Reinforcement only. )

I avoid aversives but my work isn't "Purely Positive" . There's no such a thing as Purely Positive. This term has been introduced to mock those who utilise scientific evidence to benefit their animals in the most humane way known to the date.

Firstly I have to say this - I love Positive Reinforcement and all the possibilities it gives us. I aim to use it at all times , whenever possible.

But I don't live in a fantasy world. I am aware that behaviour is fluid and not "black and white".

I am aware that punishment and negative reinforcement can be present even if we strive to avoid it. Why ?

Because despite our best intentions it is the animal who decides what's aversive. Not us.

Because we are humans and make mistakes. Because we don't have a full control over the environment and the horse is not in a perfectly designed study where all the conditions can be controlled for. Because the horse is not just responded to us and the environment around him but also towards what happens inside his body. Because during the training the horse might become thirsty or might suddenly feel some pain that we don't even have any idea about. Because for some reason what was previously positively reinforcing acquired punishing qualities , not necessarily related to what we do, but perhaps to some sight , smell or sound that happened stimulously and reminded him about past aversive experience.

We simply cannot extract all aversives from horses lives. The husbandry and vet care procedures can be trained with the application of Positive Reinforcement but when the "real deal" happens and the horse needs emergency treatment, where the circumstances involve pain and fear the aversivness will creep in. The hours of training we put in will not make this situation positive - but it will help the animal to cope with it better, it will lessen the anxiety instead of adding to it.

Aversives are everywhere, horses experience them constantly. The changing weather, the annoying bugs, the unpredictability of the environment, the pain that results from chronic diseases or the stress that comes from inadequate management.

We have a choice - to either multiply those aversives by systematically utilising Negative Reinforcement and Positive /Negative Punishment (which I do not recommend knowing how damaging aversive based training can be to the animal's well-being and our relationship with them) or minimise and eliminate them wherever we can by trying our best to strive for Positive Reinforcement.

It doesn't make us Purely Positive .

It makes us realistic.

Realistic of how much horses already endure in their daily lives.

Both dogs are due for their weekly-ish nail buzz.

They are eight and a half years old. I have done nail grinding with each since I got them (Clementine at 7 months, Hosley at 11 months). Both have been very good with it and I worked REALLY hard with them and grinders. There are lots of hot dogs involved ;-)

Today was not our day. It started off fine. Then it happened. 2 dogs, 2 meltdowns, only 2 paws per dog finished. Meltdowns were pulling paws back over and over; dripping nose (Hosley), and being on edge with me touching feet even with them laying down. I stopped after finishing one nail (picture).

Sharing because even the most well mannered, well trained dogs have meltdowns. So I ended with thay nail, partied, and gave them the hot dogs as they calmed down. We will try again later today or tomorrow.

They aren't bad dogs....they are just having a day. Life is pretty turned upside down right now and this is what happened. They aren't bad, just having a rough time. It's hard to remember - but giving them a little understanding will make it easier next time.
