Words of Wisdom: The Qur'an's Power to Revive Hearts, Just as Water Nourishes the Earth

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala said:

اَلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوْبُهُمْ بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ ۗ اَ لَا بِذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوْبُ

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The believer will never have enough of listening to good things (seeking knowledge) until he reaches Paradise.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2686)

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who follows a path in quest of knowledge, Allah will make the path of Jannah easy to him. The angels lower their wings over the seeker of knowledge, being pleased with what he does. The inhabitants of the heavens and the earth and even the fish in the depth of the oceans seek forgiveness for him. The superiority of the learned man over the devout worshipper is like that of the full moon to the rest of the stars (i.e., in brightness). The learned are the heirs of the Prophets who bequeath neither dinar nor dirham but only that of knowledge; and he who acquires it, has in fact acquired an abundant portion."[Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi].
Riyad as-Salihin, 1388

Thawbān (may Allāh be pleased with him) the freed slave of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) reported:⁣

The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said, “Fasting the month of Ramadhān is equal to ten months (in reward), and fasting six days after it is equal to two months (in reward), so that is like fasting a year.”⁣

Ibn Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: ⁣

“The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) enjoined Zakāt-ul-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenities, and to feed the poor. Whoever pays it before the (‘Eid) prayer, it is an accepted Zakāt, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is (ordinary) charity.”⁣

[Sunan Abī Dāwud 1609, Sunan Ibn Mājah 1827. Grade: Hasan]⁣

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allāh be pleased with him) narrated:⁣

The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) commanded us that the end of Ramadhān when the fasting is closed sadaqah (alms) should be paid before the people went to prayer. ‘Abdullāh b. ‘Umar used to pay it one or two days before.⁣

[Sunan Abī Dāwud 1610. Grade: Ṣaḥīḥ]⁣

Narrated by Ibn ‘Umar (may Allāh be pleased with them both):⁣

The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered the people to pay Zakāt-ul-Fitr before going to the ‘Eid prayer.⁣

[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1509]⁣

It says in al-Mawsū‘ah al-Fiqhiyyah (6/44): Staple foods include wheat, rice and other basic foods which are suitable to provide nutrition for people’s bodies on an ongoing basis. End quote.⁣

The estimation of Shaykh Ibn Bāz (may Allāh have mercy on him), who reckoned the weight of zakāt al-fitr as being approximately three kilograms. ⁣

This was also the estimate of the scholars of the Standing Committee (9/371). ⁣

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn (may Allāh have mercy on him) estimated it in grams as being 2100 grams, as it says in Fatāwā az-Zakāh, p. 274-276

Anas ibn Mālik reported: ⁣

The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said when the month of Ramadhān began, “Verily, this month has presented itself to you. There is a night within it that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it has been deprived of all good. None is deprived of its good but that he is truly deprived.”⁣

[Sunan Ibn Mājah 1644, Grade: Ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) according to Al-Albānī in Ṣaḥīḥ ibn Mājah 1341]⁣

‘Āishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) reported:⁣

When the last ten nights (of Ramadhān) would begin, the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) would keep awake at night (for prayer and devotion), awaken his family and prepare himself to be more diligent in worship.⁣

[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1174, wording here from Riyadh as-Sālihīn 1223]⁣

‘Ā’isha (may Allāh be pleased with her) reported:⁣

That Allāh’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.⁣

⁣⁣
First Hijāmah (Cupping) while fasting was disapproved⁣
⁣⁣
Narrated by Shaddad b. Aws:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to a man at al-Baqi' while he was cupping on the eighteenth of Ramadan, he (the Prophet (ﷺ)) was holding my hand. Thereupon he (ﷺ) said: “A man who cups and a man who gets himself cupped break their fast.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
[Graded saheeh by Al-Albāni in Sunan Abi Dawud 2369]⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It was then approved:⁣
⁣⁣
Anas bin Mālik narrated:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The first time cupping was disapproved for the one who is fasting was when Ja’far bin Abi Talib (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) had himself cupped while fasting and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came across him and said, “Those two have broken their fast (meaning Ja'far and the man who was cupping him.)” But later on the Prophet (ﷺ) allowed cupping for the one who is fasting. Anas bin Mālik used to have himself cupped while he was fasting.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
[Related by Ad-Daraqutni (2/182), who regarded it as a strong hadith, check Bulugh al-Maram Hadith 688]⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Narrated by Ibn `Abbas:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The Prophet (ﷺ) was cupped while he was in the state of lhram, and also while he was observing a fast.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
[Sahih al-Bukhari 1938]⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Narrated by Thabit Al-Bunani:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Anas bin Mālik was asked whether they disliked the cupping for a fasting person. He replied in the negative and said, “Only if it causes weakness.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
[Sahih al-Bukhari 1940]⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Imām Mālik (may Allāh be pleased with him) said, ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“Cupping is only disapproved of for some one who is fasting out of fear that he will become weak and if it were not for that, it would not be disapproved of. I do not think that a man who is cupped in Ramadan and does not break his fast, owes anything, and I do not say that he has to make up for the day on which he was cupped, because cupping is only disapproved of for someone fasting if his fast is endangered. I do not think that someone who is cupped, and is then well enough to keep the fast until evening, owes anything, nor does he have to make up for that day.”⁣⁣

Allah next conveys the good news that He will put fear of the Muslims, and feelings of subordination to the Muslims in the hearts of their disbelieving enemies, because of their Kufr and Shirk. And Allah has prepared torment and punishment for them in the Hereafter.
