【After eviction, 70-year old traditional handmade Mahjong artisan hopes to carry on his craft in Hong Kong】
Biu Kee Mahjong(標記麻雀), skirting a stairway of an old building in Jordan, Hong Kong, is where “Uncle King” (景叔) made his living most of his life crafting traditional handmade Mahjong tiles. He’s among a handful of artisans left in Hong Kong.

But he has been forced to evict by the end of October 2022. Although facing the possibility of his craft going extinct, he says on social media he still would like to “carry on carving tiles”, until he is too old to do it, "It's a passion of mine and I don't want to end this in my generation".

Despite the overwhelming financial hardships of his craft, what makes him want to continue? The main angle we want to ask is: Is there a place left for his type of traditional Mahjong handicraft in today’s modern 21st-century society, where fewer and fewer people desire traditional handcraft mahjong? Is there any future interest in protecting his traditional Mahjong craft?
