Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints faces 91 new child s*xual abuse lawsuits in California

FLOODLIT.org has learned of a new wave of 91 child s*x abuse lawsuits filed against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California.

Starting on Aug. 26, the Slater Slater Schulman LLP law firm filed 91 civil suits in 26 California counties, each on behalf of a different abuse survivor who says a Latter-day Saint official, employee or other leader s*xually assaulted them, and that the church failed to protect them from harm.

In all, the lawsuits accuse 97 former Mormon leaders and church members of child s*xual abuse, including:

20 bishops
20 elders
8 missionaries
5 high priests
6 teachers
4 counselors
3 youth leaders
1 stake president
30 other leaders/members
On Sep. 6, the law firm submitted a petition for coordination to the Riverside County Superior Court, requesting that it consider the 91 separate lawsuits as coordinated actions.

The petition said more lawsuits may be included in the future.

On Oct. 8, the Mormon Church filed a notice of removal to the US District Court for the Central District of California, requesting that the lawsuits be removed to federal court.

FLOODLIT.org is requesting copies of court records for each civil case.

An initial review of 10 of the lawsuits showed that in each case, Mormon officials allegedly covered up or failed to report abuse to law enforcement.

In three of those cases, s*xual abuse allegedly took place in a bishop’s office at a Mormon church building.

Since 2022, FLOODLIT.org has researched and reported on s*xual abuse in the Mormon Church. The database at https://floodlit.org/accused/ contains over 1,000 published case reports about accused individuals, including over 100 former Mormon bishops.

The Mormon Church has not published a list of known s*x offenders in its ranks.

A December 2022 YouTube video showed a "predator poachers" organization representative confronting the LDS missionary in November 2022 in Virginia and accusing him of soliciting a minor.

The missionary admitted on camera to having initiated contact with a person he believed to be only 11 years old, and to making s*xual advances and requests, including soliciting s*xually explicit pictures and video, and inviting her to meet in person.

He was sent home to Boise, Idaho shortly after the video was recorded.

While in Idaho, he s*xually assaulted a minor.

He was arrested in Boise in July 2023 and charged with six felonies, including r**e of a minor.

In a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to two charges related to child s*xual abuse. The remaining charges were dismissed.

The judge in his case received many letters of support from local LDS church members, according to a family member of the victim.

That family member told FLOODLIT a Boise bishop told young women's leaders in his ward not to report s*xual abuse of another child by this perpetrator.

Yesterday, he was sentenced to three to 25 years in prison. He received credit for 299 days served.

Another former Mormon bishop has been sentenced to prison for s*xually abusing children.

In Spokane County, Washington this month, a 79-year-old LDS church member was sentenced to five years in prison for molesting two children in incidents that took place roughly 15 years apart.

In all, at least four victims came forward saying the former bishop and former stake presidency counselor s*xually abused them.

In every instance, the victims were under the age of 12 at the time of the alleged abuse.

During a November 2021 recorded Zoom meeting in which the accused was confronted about the abuse, he said:

"I will be very open and honest. There have been times in my life since I was 14 years old that Satan has been after me ... I've kept myself clean, for the most part."

If you were an LDS church member in Lethbridge, Alberta in the 1970s or in Spokane, Washington in the 2000s, you may have known this man as a Mormon bishop or stake presidency member.

Personal message from Jane and Charlie

In a Kansas case we reported on today, the abuser was a Mormon church member who allegedly preyed on girls for decades. He accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, so that prosecutors would dismiss counts of r**e and so**my.

The victim’s mother said during the 2019 sentencing:

“My daughter is hurt … She’s angry at the world. She’s self-harming. She’s in middle school where she’s ridiculed by her peers. She mistrusts family members, who don’t understand why she’s acting out, which leads to further anger and trauma. She can’t quiet the memory of a childhood robbed from her.”

The abuser would be eligible for parole in 25 years, the woman said, but her daughter “will still be serving a sentence he forced on her at age 8.”

We feel this mother summed up what so many s*xual abuse survivors have to go through for the rest of their lives.

If you’re an abuse survivor, we want you to know it’s okay to be angry. It’s normal and natural.

You’re not wrong if you choose not to forgive.

You’re not sinning if you choose not to trust.

And nothing that others did to you will ever make you unworthy of love.

THE ABUSE WAS NOT YOUR FAULT.

Even though LDS leaders have taught that abuse victims can be responsible for their abuse, you are not to blame – not even a little bit, not even at all.

If you, like the victim’s mother described her, ever feel like you “can’t quiet the memory of a childhood robbed from” you, or a future robbed from you, we want you to know that you’re not alone, we see you, we hear you, and we honor you.

Mormon s*x abuse case BREAKING NEWS: former Colorado stake president and grandson of Mormon apostle Bruce McConkie pleaded not guilty this morning despite a plea deal offer. He is a former deputy district attorney. A police PC affidavit says he confessed CSA to an LDS leader in 2008 (name redacted).

This doctor allegedly used his position of trust as a Mormon church member to help him manipulate some of the victims. He has been accused by **more than 200 victims** so far, of s*xual assault and other s*xual misconduct.

He is a former LDS stake high council member. As of November 2023, FLOODLIT's sources indicated that he was living in Nephi, Utah. He has not been criminally charged with any s*x crimes.

According to medical licensing board records, he admitted to taking photos of the ge****ls and breasts of five patients, all under 18. Those records also stated that he claimed he provided consent forms for the minors' parents to sign but could not provide the records, and that he said he deleted the photos from his phone and shredded the consent forms.

Today a sitting stake president of the Mormon church was charged with failing to report allegations of child s*xual abuse to police. Floodlit.org has documented at least two occasions where an acting stake president was caught perpetrating a s*x crime, but this is the first time that we have come across a case like this. Rhett Hintze is expected to turn himself in on a felony charge of failure to report abuse. He is scheduled to appear at an arraignment this Friday.
