For those of you that listened to our podcast with Sea Shepherd founder, Paul Watson, who listened to our other orca related podcasts with Lori Marina and Charles Vinick, or who just love orcas and were inspired by films like Free W***y and Blackfish, you might be interested to read this fascinating and heartbreaking new book by Paul Watson and Tiffany Humphrey.

Orcapedia tells the story of every single one of the 162 orcas who have died in captivity since the first orca (Wanda) was caught in the wild in 1961, to the 56 orcas who are still held captive today in marine parks around the world.

It is a sobering and powerful book that will hopefully, one day, serve only as a reminder of how we once exploited these beautiful and intelligent animals.

All proceeds go to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Visit seashepherd.org for more information -

He travels extensively to head up their campaign to improve animal welfare at zoos and safari parks in China, and also works to increase general veterinary and animal welfare standards and promote animal-welfare education in schools and universities.

Dave chats to us about his career after graduating in Environmental Science and Conservation Biology, when he worked as an ecologist for a river restoration charity in England. He talks about his 12-month trip to Asia and South America where he carried out zoo investigations and reports on welfare conditions at local marketplaces and how, during his time in Vietnam, he was profoundly disturbed by seeing moon bears in markets being sold to bear bile farmers. That led to him contacting Jill Robinson and taking on a role at Animals Asia. We then chat about the incredible work he has done over the years throughout Asia to improve the lives of countless animals and changing attitudes and behaviours across the region.

In 2006, while Sam Green was visiting Sri Lanka, she came across a street dog that seemed minutes away from death. She wasn't able to walk away from the dog (who she later named, Mango) and instead, got to work contacting vets and animal experts and paying for the dog to receive the medical attention it needed.

That was the birth of what would become Dogstar Foundation. An organisation that, in the following 14 years, has become one of the most innovative, impactful and expertly run dog population management projects in the world today.

Sam and Mark chat to us about the traumatic events that took Sam to Sri Lanka in the first place, their desire to want to do more to help the dogs they saw suffering, how that led to them building an organisation, and some of the lessons they learned along the way.
