"They might not be on the top, but they were at the PEAK of our hearts."

While they may not have secured the top position, they certainly held a special place in our hearts.

As they carried out their astounding performance alongside their trainers Mr. Reymar Royo, Mr. Junior Ifurong Rio, and Mr. Edison R. SPOOKY STORY #6

Father’s Call

Friday, 13th of September, 2019

I was engrossed in my research, alone in my apartment, when my phone suddenly started ringing; it was my father. I wondered why he was calling at this hour, as it was already 10 pm. I answered, only to hear muffled sounds on the other end, as if someone was covering his mouth. Concern washed over me; was my father in trouble?

After a prolonged silence, my father finally spoke, saying, "My dear, I'm sorry..." His apology left me perplexed. Why was he apologizing? Had he done something wrong?

"Father, are you trying to prank me? If so, please don't," I said, my tone filled with worry.

"Listen, dear, if someone comes to your door, do not, under any circumstances, open it. Just don't, please. Even if they beg, leave it be," he whispered.

Those words sent a shiver down my spine. "Open the door only after the sun has risen. Before doing so, recite the Latin prayer three times, okay?" he instructed.

"Father, please tell me what's going on. Is something happening?" I implored.

"My dear, I've always loved you, and this is my last chance to protect you. Stay safe," he said, and I desperately begged him to tell me where he was so I could call the police. I was overwhelmed, and my tears flowed.

But he didn't answer, only repeating, "There's no use."

I couldn't stop crying; my father was attempting to comfort me through the call, even in the face of a dire situation. I feared this might be our last conversation.

Eventually, he spoke again. "They've found me, dear. Remember what I told you..." But then, a man's scream pierced through the phone, a horrifying and agonizing sound of bones breaking and limbs tearing apart. To my horror, I realized that the scream belonged to my father.

The phone call abruptly ended, and I sat in my apartment, the clock now reading midnight. I felt a deep emptiness and confusion within me, overwhelmed by dark thoughts.

I considered calling the police, but my father hadn't given me his location. My energy drained away, and I found it impossible to focus on my work. Time passed, and it was now 1 am. I stared at my phone, hoping for a message from my father, but there was none.

I recollected my father's words about not opening the door until sunrise and reciting the Latin prayer, but I realized I had forgotten the prayer's words.

At 2 am, I decided to take a quick shower, which took only a couple of minutes. Afterward, I got dressed and sat back in my chair, feeling numb and shattered by the day's events.

Around 2:30 am, a knock at the door jolted me awake. I rushed to the door and found a man outside. To my surprise, it was my father, battered and beaten. Relief washed over me; my father had survived.

However, something felt amiss. My father never called me "kid" or "sweetie"; he always referred to me as "dear." Moreover, this man lacked a distinctive birthmark on his neck, which my father always had. I backed away, refusing to let him in and securing the lock.

The man outside begged me to open the door, saying it was freezing. His voice became distorted, a bizarre mix of a woman and a child's voice. Fear gripped me; would I meet the same fate as my father?

The relentless pounding on the door continued, and I prayed that it would withstand the assault. I barricaded the door with furniture and crouched down, feeling helpless. As I hummed the song my father had sung to me during our call, a strange warmth enveloped me, as if someone were hugging me, though I was alone in the room. I tried to focus on my safety.

By 3:25 am, the banging ceased, but I dared not leave my position. I lay on the floor, unable to sleep, waiting for dawn.

In a dream, I saw my father standing before me, offering a warm smile. I longed to hug him but found myself immobilized.

"I'm proud of you, my dearest child," he said with a calming tone, waving as he walked toward the light.

I pleaded with him to stay a bit longer, tears welling up, but I couldn't move. Upon waking, I wiped my tears away, deeply moved by the dream. I checked my phone; it was 6:39 am, and the sun had risen.

I removed the barricades and found a paper on the floor with a Latin prayer. I recited it three times and, at last, gathered the courage to open the door.

To my relief, everything outside appeared normal. However, I couldn't shake the feeling of loss, knowing I wouldn't see my father again, at least in this life. I pondered what would have happened if I had opened the door or failed to recite the prayer. The uncertainty haunted me.

On the news, I learned of a gruesome crime where a man's body had been dismembered, his face removed. The police suspected a psychopath, but what alarmed them most was the precision with which the body had been mutilated.

As the investigation continued, this was the only evidence found on the victim's phone.

Spooky Story #5

"The Elements of the Province"

My first day in our province was a small, but unforgettable day, as it marked the first time I encountered a strange creature. It all began when my parents made a decision. My mother and I had a heated argument that led to her leaving us, leaving me and my two brothers with our father. He decided to take us to Sanluis Pagsanghan, Samar, which was his hometown.

Upon our arrival, we met my grandmother, Lola Idjing, and her brother. My father, Gloria, and I engaged in a lengthy conversation. As the night wore on, my two brothers and I decided to explore the village. We ventured out and met Jasper, who was the first person we encountered. We connected with him as he was from Manila too, and he offered to show us around. We embarked on a walk and discovered a beautiful view by the creek.

We chatted until the wind picked up, sending shivers down our spines. Our hair stood on end, and we all grew alarmed. Looking into the distance, we saw a large, dark figure with the face of a buffalo but a human body. Our screams caught the attention of my grandmother, Gloria, who rushed to us, asking what had happened and who was with us. We recounted what we had seen, but she didn't offer an explanation.

That night, I fell ill, my head spinning, and I couldn't stand. Lola Idjing sought help from a man who applied something on me, placed a leaf on me, and poured candle water. He then performed a ritual, revealing a strange texture in the candle's melted wax. The man, visibly moved, handed a necklace to Lola Idjing.

The following morning, I woke to find my grandmother Gloria, Papa, and my brothers still asleep. I ventured downstairs to have breakfast, and my father spoke to me, emphasizing the importance of eating. Suddenly, Lola Idjing spoke, warning me not to go out alone and unaccompanied, especially after 6 p.m. She explained that there were creatures and elements in the province, some playful and potentially dangerous. I listened to her tales, her words echoing in my mind.

She cautioned us to place rice and salt around the house after 6 p.m., to lock the windows and doors, and to avoid going with anyone we met outside. She also gave us protective amulets, or "anti-anting," to ward off any malevolent entities.

For the next two weeks, my brothers and I followed her advice, securing our home every evening. Days passed, and we witnessed a pregnant woman near our house, in distress, as she was about to give birth. There were sounds of agony and strange creatures lurking nearby. Dad was summoned to help, and he recounted the same eerie experience he had seen when he had peeked through our grandmother's window.

Eventually, my father decided it was time for us to leave the village, and we bid farewell to my grandmother. Thus, my eerie encounter in the province came to an end.

Spooky Story #4

"Those Footsteps"

Greetings, everybody! This is Zyke, your photojournalist. I'd like to share a chilling experience I had during the pandemic period, given that Halloween is right around the corner. So, here's the story...

I used to spend my nights in our aunt's room with my cousins. We would chat and giggle until well past midnight, especially during the Christmas break. Despite our aunt's repeated warnings to go to bed, we refused because we simply weren't tired.

One night, our aunt abruptly informed us that no one occupied the floor above us; it had been abandoned. She mentioned that, particularly around midnight, they sometimes heard mysterious footsteps coming from the deserted floor. Although this spooked us a bit, we dismissed it as a tactic to scare us into getting some shut-eye and continued our conversation.

But at exactly 3 a.m., as my cousins and I quietly scrolled through our phones, I heard footsteps approaching from the floor above. My heart raced, and I tightly closed my eyes. Trembling with fear, I buried my face in a pillow. It became apparent that my cousins had heard the footsteps too, and we all reacted in the same way. We stared at each other in terror until the footsteps finally ceased.

Only then did we finally drift off to sleep, though it was a fearful slumber.
