First travel since the COVID-19 and the long awaited overseas spotting finally come!

TAP Air Portugal A330-200 and A330-900NEO are spotted in a warm and sunny day at Humberto Delgado Airport (Lisbon Airport) in Mid March 2023. This excellent spotting location offers panoramic view to the runway operation and can be easily accessed by public transport.

Delivered in Sep 1987, this Boeing 767-346 was registered as JA8264 and all along serving the Japan Airlines / Japan Asia Airways until stored in March 2014. Orient Thai Airlines took over this aircraft in August 2014 and carried the registration as HS-BKI.

Pictures below were captured in DMK in Feb 2017. A few months later, the jet entered into storage in Sep 2017.

Delayed by the pandemic, The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games finally began on 23 July 2021 with masked athletes and empty stadiums without spectator as familiar sights, and this unusual Olympic Games finished on 8 August 2021.

Under the COVID-19 pandemic, our habit and daily life become unrecognizable. People stay indoor to maintain social distancing, restaurants, bars and shopping malls are closing, large gathering such as sporting events, schools, concerts are cancelling. Masks and disinfectant sourcing become our daily routines.

With travel restrictions between countries and much reduced travel demand, the slumping aviation industry are facing unprecedented challenge and with no way of estimating the return of normality. Airlines have no choice but to adopt massive approaches of cost cutting, e.g. employees lay off, capacity reduction, long term storage or early retirement of surplus fleet, for their survival. For spotters, it is sad to hear the early phase out of oldies, as well as operation cease of some much loved carriers.

Photos below are captured in the Naha Base Air Festival in Dec 2019, my last travel before the COVID-19. Wish everyone stay strong and healthy. Better days will always come.

Japan Airlines took delivery of its first A350-900 aircraft in June 2019, which has total 18 on order and all configure for domestic operation. The new flagship starts its commercial service on the Tokyo Haneda to Fukuoka route on Sep 1.

From July 2019, China Eastern introduces the A350-941 on selected HKG to PVG services. Being the carrier's new flagship, the A350s offer a very nice business class cabin. The seats are with the same configuration as the Delta One Suites, which feature with doors to provide high level of privacy.

In addition, in the past couple of weeks, the carrier's two Disney liveried A330-343 also made a few visits to HKG. Their movement are warmly welcomed by the local spotters.

ANA has ordered a total of three Airbus A380 aircraft and all assigned for its Tokyo Narita and Honolulu service. All three aircraft received special liveries FLYING HONU (meaning "flying sea turtle") that shows Hawaiian people's love to this animal.

Featured below is the first FLYING HONU, JA381A, liveried as ANA Blue and represents the Hawaiian sky. It starts its passenger service on 24 May 2019.

Our team recently made a visit to Tokyo and spent a couple of hours at NRT and HND. We were fortunate enough to have great weather with warm sunshine and pleasant temperature in our spotting time!

Lufthansa Retro Liveried Boeing 747-8i (D-ABYT) on his final approach into HKG runway 07L.

This aircraft is the 18th 747-8i delivered to Lufthansa in March 2015. To celebrate the carrier's 60th anniversary, it was painted in a livery that was used on Lufthansa aircraft in the 1970s and 80s.

On 1 Oct 2018, the Air Belgium A340-300 is turning onto HKG runway 07R for its last departure after the carrier announced the suspension of its Hong Kong operation at the end of Sep. You can make a nice comparison between the gradually phased out Airbus fuel-thirsty four-engine jet, with its more economical and fuel-efficient twin-engine successor A350 behind.

Before the retirement of ANA Boeing 747-400D aircraft in March 2014, the jumbo jets were commonly seen on the Tokyo Haneda-Okinawa service.

Featured below are JA8960 and JA8961 spotted in Okinawa, in particular, JA8961 operated the last 747 passenger service for ANA.

As a Hong Kong based spotter, it is always a desire to spot in a perfect weather (e.g. good visibility, warm sunshine, moderate temperature). While such desire is far from reality, with the ever changing visibility, it could be interesting when you compare the backdrop of the same batch of photos.

Air Belgium A340-300 departed at runway 25L at noon for its long journey to Brussels South Charleroi Airport as flight KF852.

Intends to operate a fleet of 4 ex-Finnair A340-300 aircraft, the carrier picks Hong Kong as its first destination and plans to connect to other major destinations in China. After months of delay, the carrier finally starts its Hong Kong service on 3 June 2018.

If you keep following Air Belgium's update and review, you may be curious on this airline start-up and their head-scratching business model. Who knows how long they can sustain their operation? So...let's spot this carrier as much as possible!

Pictured below are some domestic traffic spotted in A*o Kumamoto Airport on 28-05-2018.

Located 20km east of Kumamoto City, the airport sits on the western side of the A*o outer mountain ridge and mainly handles domestic services. Despite the not so frequent traffic, it could see some of the smaller Japanese carrier such as Amakusa Airlines, Fuji Dream Airlines and Solaseed Air.

Thank you and goodbye, B-HNL!

First registered as N7771, this aircraft is actually the very first triple seven with Manufacturer Serial Number (MSN) 27116, Line no. 1, and performed its maiden flight on 12 June 1994.

After flight test programme, the airliner was refurbished and re-engined with two Rolls-Royce Trent 800 engines, replacing the original PW 4074 engines. It was delivered to Cathay Pacific in December 2000, registered as B-HNL and remained in active service since then.

On 31 May 2018, this 24 years old 777 finished its last revenue service as CX506/507. The airframe was then ferried to XMN, before heading to its real home, Boeing field in Seattle.

B-HNL, thank you for your contribution to the world of aviation!
