🌉The San Juanico Bridge (1972)
The San Juanico Bridge was built in August 1969 over the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest navigational strait in the world that separates Samar and Leyte Islands, and was completed in December 1972.
The bridge, which spans 2.162 kilometers, was built as part of the Pan-Philippine Highway now called the Maharlika Highway, a network of roads, bridges, and sea routes that connect the islands of Luzon, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao
🌉 Biliran Bridge (1975)
Biliran Bridge connecting Biliran Island and Leyte Island in Eastern Visayas. Completed around 1975, this bridge is about 150 meters long and its central span, held in place by an arched steel structure, hovers above a short and narrow channel of water measuring about 40 meters wide at low tide.
🌉 Wawa Bridge (1975)
Liloan's town center is located at the northern part of Panaon Island which is connected to the mainland of Leyte by a bridge (Wawa Bridge).
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is currently strengthening the Liloan Bridge here that connects Leyte's mainland to Panaon Island.
The P50 million project, which is one of the major upgrade works since the bridge was built, involves concrete jacketing on piers and application of carbon fiber sheets as well as carbon fiber plates.
Jacketing is done by application of a new layer of concrete to strengthen the bridge piers. Carbon fiber sheets and plates are materials used in strengthening bridges to increase a structure's load capacity.
🌉Agas-Agas Bridge (2009)
The highest bridge in the Philippines, 89-meter high Agas-Agas bridge crosses a deep ravine in Brgy. Kahupian, Sogod, Southern Leyte.
🌉Bontoc/Buenavista Slab Bridge (2015)
DPWH explains rationale behind bridge
The bridge is necessary! That’s what the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) wants the public to know about the controversial Buenavista Slab Bridge. After years of getting laughed at by the people, the DPWH finally set the record straight to explain the rationale behind the bridge built on dry land.
DPWH-Southern Leyte explained that though there is no visible water on the dry land surrounding the bridge, it appears that there is a creek or even a river underground that’s making the ground soft.
This section of the road has been rebuilt three times but keeps getting easily damaged; thus, DPWH-Southern Leyte engineers decided to build the bridge so they could put the foundation deeper into the ground to stabilize the structure.
As for the railings, these were added for the safety of passersby and vehicles, in the event that the bridge might accidentally sink all of a sudden in the future.
