Does your dog know the difference between a smile and a snarl?

Our host Danny gives us a breakdown of why coming in hot for a hug with a big smile can feel threatening to a dog.

Catch more in the episode of the Dog Scholar on whether dogs can detect lies. You know where to find it, dog people 🐕

Dogs can predict earthquakes (and why that's amazing)

But how? Can they smell something we can't detect? Hear tremors seismometers are missing? Or are they collaborating with... cows? This episode sounds ridiculous, but the science of dogs secret sixth sense is fascinating.

How much do dogs remember?

Most owners assumer a dog has a similar memory to a human - but is that true? How is a dogs brain wired to remember? How does the latest scientific research impact how we train and understand out pets?

Are you too attached to your dog?

New show Sunday is here! Watch over on YouTube or listen on all podcast platforms.

How attached are we to our dogs? And what type of attachment does a dog form with their owner? Is there a difference in the brain activity of a mother looking at their child versus their dog? Lets breakdown the facts and science behind the ultimatum: it's me, or the dog.

Dogs can see magnetism (probably)

We're back! With some incredible (and baffling) new facts and science about dogs - search 'The Dog Scholar' on YouTube or click the link below to watch the new episode.

The Dog Scholar's back!

Are dogs capable of magnetoreception?

Or in other words, can they see magnetic fields?
On tbe first episode of the new season, we discuss some cutting-edge neuroscience that might shock you. Including an...erm...fascinating study where scientists spent two years observing dogs peeing and pooping to compare their positions to daily fluctuations in the earth's magnetic field.

As weird as it sounds, it might explain how lost dogs can find their way home.

Update! 🐕 You may have noticed that we’ve taken a break from posting after an unbroken run of 22 (!!) shows last year. Aside from our XL Bullies special (available now on YouTube and all podcast platforms) we’ve been working hard at bringing the show back better than ever.

We’re thrilled to announce that a new season of The Dog Scholar will be back on your Sunday mornings starting on 7th April. 6 new episodes have been filmed and they’re currently being edited and perfected ready to share with the world. Following the success of the XL Bullies episode we’ve got shorter shows for you, with even more science and laughs packed in. You will never quite look at dogs the same way again…

Stay tuned for some sneak peaks and other announcements over the next few weeks 👀 and huge thank you for all the messages and questions that have been sent in while we’ve been away!

14/01/2024

We're back with an XL Bully special, premiering live at 4pm on YouTube.

We cover the things you need to know about the ban, as well as the science on:

•Whether blanket bans work
•The brain chemistry of aggressive dogs (not just bullys)
• Analysis of the signs and reasons for imoending dog bites

Join us on YouTube at 4pm UK time for the premier. You can chat to us live as you watch the show.

We've made some changes to the show following your feedback on the first two seasons, which we hope you'll like for season 3. This show is a one off special, in a new format, and is much shorter than you're used to. Join us live for the premier if you can, but either way, let us know what you think in the comments.

Be shure to share far and wide so we can bring some science into the XL Bully debate and improve some of the fundamental issues that lead to breeds being banned.

Dogs can read us and they can even copy our behaviour, though maybe not exactly in the way you’d expect. It’s been shown that a dog can learn through observing other dogs perform a task but just how much does that extend to a human, like an owner? And just what are we teaching them?

This episode may contain pack behaviours, sniffing paper and a touch of Canine Chaos.

This will make you yawn, which might make your dog yawn. Assuming you're not tired, stressed or bored, why do we catch yawns? This episode may contain scientific proof that dogs are more empathetic than chimps, decoy mouth movements and contagious yawning (sorry).

Do dogs talk to us? In their own way...yes. It has been shown that different barks can be used to portray different emotional states, i.e happy, angry, playful etc. Dogs can use, for example, harsh, low-frequency sounds to signal hostility and higher pitched, tonal sounds when friendly or frightened. In fact, they are one of very few species that deliberately signal vocally to another species.
