🌳Black Oak Society mourns the unexpected ascension of Dr. James West.

Founder .has.words and Creative Director have had the pleasure of sharing rooms with him outside of the Wake County Commissioners’ chambers. He had a real and evident love for the residents of Wake County, particularly those historically marginalized. We send our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow commissioners at this time.

Thank you, Dr. West for your leadership, spirit, and love for our community. Rest well 🕊️.

Look who is on the cover of for their September/October edition!
One of our favorites of 😍 I saw this on the magazine stand as I was coming out of the Harris Teeter in the North Ridge Shopping Center in Raleigh and I had to sn**ch it up! Her gorgeously bright smile immediately gave me a sense of elation as I cradled it in my hand so as not to bend or crumble the pages. As I got to my car, I looked over the cover again and flipped to her story to read her article “Something Worth Reading” by Dena Daw.

We chance to chat with Victoria at our party, where we celebrated Victoria along with other small business owners/advocates, about the grand opening her bookstore this past summer and what is next for the future. As amazing as her journey has been this far, being able to hear what she has in store for her future blew me away and inspired me to continue uplifting her, her family and her bookstore .

If you have a chance to grab a copy of , her story is on page 26-31. If you want to find more ways to support Victoria, follow instagram page, share her story with your family and friends, be on the lookout and purchase her first picture book series “The Museum Lives in Me” (March 2024), and visit her bookstore!

Congratulations Victoria on all your success, we wish you much, much more to come 🥂

This picture was taken while on vacation in the heart of Black Canyon City in Arizona. As moved as I was by the humongous rock forms that littered the hot, desert valley, I was even more moved at how this scene was the perfect depiction of the state of the country. I noticed the “No Shooting” sign that hid in the background of the torn flag and tall cacti that surrounded it like it was supposed to be overlooked because of all the beauty around it. In that instant, a scroll of the many news headers stating that another Black/Brown person has been killed by the police flashed in front of my eyes. I looked at the tattered red and white strips of the flag flapping in the wind. It looked clean and shiny against the wispy blue sky, but we all know everything that glitters ain’t gold, no matter how put together it looks. It reminded me how the idea of this decade has torn us away from our friends and family and made us choose sides. We all have a tear in our lives because of the divide. I look at this picture and think, even in my leisure, I am still reminded every day that we are not free.

“What to the Slave, is the Fourth of July” but a day to remember why we still fight the good fight to this day.

Welcome July! As we dive head first in to summer, I am reminded from these beautiful affirmation cards that .liveincolor made for our GBRHF exhibition: “I AM MAGIC”, “I BELONG IN THIS SPACE”.

It is so important to see your own magic. To see how special and valuable you really are makes the world of difference when you are going after a goal or a dreaam. The first rule of magic is that you MUST believe, otherwise it won’t work. That goes in hand with knowing you belong in whatever space you create for yourself. To never feel invisible in a room full of people because you are always the moment. To know you belong; point blank, period!

I hope July helps you see how extraordinary you are and allows you to stand tall in spaces you don’t normally tread. The world needs a little help seeing the magic, yours just might be what we need. ✨

For Women's History Month, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible historian and author, Carmen Cauthen! She was featured on ABC11 WTVD in January by the great Joel Brown ! We love you, Carmen!

Segregation and racist deed covenants kept Black families, newly freed from slavery, from buying or renting in Raleigh proper.

Thank you and for this amazing article on our book talk with for her new book “The History of Raleigh’s Black Neighborhoods”

We had a amazing turnout at this event. Every seat was full and we delighted in and .has.words as they spoke about the book, the history of Raleigh and how the book came to be! There was also a book signing at the end by the author and everyone lined up for this! It was such a monumental moment for Ms. Carmen, BOS and everyone in attendance. The book is available on Amazon and through the author’s page.

The Future Is Now

Black Oak Society was born in January 2020 out of a desire to highlight Raleigh’s talented Black writers, journalists, and storytellers and give Black Raleigh her flowers now. Gentrification and the reverse migration is rapidly changing the make up of Raleigh’s historically Black neighborhoods. Because they do not have many of the same protections as other historic neighborhoods, many of the great institutions and gathering places created and utilized by Black Raleighites are on the verge of changing beyond recognition. Many of our elders are being pushed out of their homes by the rising property taxes and predatory developers. But what many don’t know is that Black Raleigh is resiliant. We are not just Raleigh’s past. We are Raleigh’s future.

The pen is mightier than the sword, and the writers and artists behind BOS Zine are fighting for the voices of the marginalized and underserved to be heard. We are standing up to the single narrative about Southeast Raleigh and its’ residents pushed by the mainstream media. Our work is nuanced, celebratory, subversive, and confident.

We cannot wait to celebrate our Raleigh with you.
