It's the BIG BOS LIFT, y'all!
Thank you for stopping by! Black Oak Society has come a long way from our first crowdfunding campaign — a Patreon page we started in December of 2019. Since then we have created 5 magazines, published dozens of local and regional Black creatives, and reached thousands of people around the world with our stories.
Now we are taking it to the next level!
This year, BOS is launching three "firsts":
1. The BOS NOW Podcast: Our twice-monthly show covering Black art, Black news, and Black culture from the perspective of the Oak City. We have two amazing sponsors, but we need to secure better gear and we want to show our guests some love for being on our show!
2. The "Give Black Raleigh Her Flowers" Art Exhibition: Our premiere art exhibition opens May 6th at Anchorlight in Downtown Raleigh. Five of the Triangle's most innovative and talented Black photographers have created stunning artistic portraits of 10 Black matriarchs who have helped build Raleigh into what it is today. Your support will help us cover the cost of printing and framing the artwork, as well as programming during the exhibition.
3. BOS Magazine Vol. 6: While we have already made 5 outstanding issues of BOS Magazine – the only literary journal dedicated to "giving Black Raleigh her flowers now" — we've never collaborated with another organization....until now! Volume Six is a special collaboration with St. Augustine's Arts Department led by the incomparable Professor Linda Dallas. The issue's theme is "Black Power/Black Politics" and will be published in June. Your contributions will help us compensate all of our incredible contributors, as well as supporting the costs for shipping to folks like you!
We have a top-notch list of rewards at every level of support. We are so grateful for every contribution to making 2022's BIG BOS Lift a success!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Love and Gratitude,
Courtney Napier (Founder), and
Aeriel Sanders (Co-Direc

There’s a good chance that if artists hadn’t brought this story back into the collective consciousness, Mother Fletcher may have died without ever sitting before Congress to testify to the night of the Tulsa Massacre.

Black artists, and those who partner with us, matter. Black stories matter. #blacklivesmatter, yesterday, tomorrow, and forever. ✊🏿

Posted @withregram • @npr Viola Fletcher, the oldest-known living survivor of the 1921 Greenwood massacre, testifies before a House Judiciary subcommittee.
It's been 100 years since a white mob attacked the Tulsa neighborhood known as Black Wall Street. "Mother Fletcher" was one of three survivors offering eyewitness accounts on Wednesday, as they seek recognition and compensation for the survivors and their descendants.
“(The police) are a very real menace to every black cat alive in this country. And no matter how many people say, ‘You’re being paranoid when you talk about police brutality’ – I know what I’m talking about. I survived those streets and those precinct basements and I know. And I’ll tell you this – I know what it was like when I was really helpless, how many beatings I got. And I know what happens now because I’m not really helpless. But I know, too, that if he (police) don’t know that this is Jimmy Baldwin and not just some other nigger he’s gonna blow my head off just like he blows off everybody else’s head. It could happen to my mother in the morning, to my sister, to my brother… For me this has always been a violent country – it has never been a democracy.” James Baldwin’s interview with Dick Cavett, 1969
The clip is a conversation between Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin.
The only thing that has changed is that they are now broadcasting the murder of innocent Black and brown people all over the world on television. No more hanging from the trees on the local roads to scare Black folk anymore, naw, now they show the WORLD they can kill us and still get away with it. We live Black horror daily, we don’t have to go to the movies to see it.
