How can we increase our first-pass success rate? We would ideally like this to be 100% - however, things get in our way. Things like the positioning of the patient, placement of the blade, a slow and steady approach to the airway, identifying landmarks, preoxygenation/denitrogenation all come into play when we want our first time entering the airway to be successful. In this module, we are going to break down all the steps to increase our FPS rate while maintaining saturations!

Look at the importance of "ramping" the patient which aligns the axis of the airway. Axis = Access!

I’m infected…. A look at Sepsis on the upcoming podcast….

Each year 1.7 million Americans are diagnosed with sepsis, resulting in nearly 270,000 deaths. EMS providers routinely encounter patients with infection, ranging from the nursing home UTI to a child with pneumonia, but how should these patients be classified and treated? This podcast will explore the spectrum of sepsis, including SIRS (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) criteria and pathophysiology from simple inflammation to shock. The podcast discussion will review strategies to better recognize and treat early warning signs of sepsis in the prehospital environment.

To act is easy; to understand is hard.... Continue to study your profession, learn why you treat patients and how the treatment affects them. Do not just render a treatment because it is part of an order set or algorithmic process. To truly understand helps the clinical process and the compassion helps both the patient and caregiver......

This week is National Telecommunicator Week. I would like to say thank you to all Telecommunicators, but especially those behind the headsets of Rowan County 9-1-1. (Rowan County, NC)

While they deserve recognition daily, public safety telecommunications is honored nationally the second week of April each year.

I would like to celebrate our own by honoring and giving thanks to all of the dedicated individuals of ROWAN. They devote their lives to serving the public and saving lives daily.

It is essential to recognize and value the critical role that emergency communications personnel serve in our community. The unsung heroes operate behind the scenes to provide critical assistance and direction during emergencies.

Session: Better...Smarter...Faster: Leveraging Extended Reality Simulation in Prehospital Medicine

Presenters: John Dorsch, MD, and Nestor Rivera (not pictured)

Description:
Achieving mastery in prehospital medicine requires personnel to train and sustain a comprehensive breadth of knowledge, skills, and abilities. Medics must be well-trained, well-equipped, and well-prepared to respond to a wide range of medical and traumatic emergencies. Extended Reality (XR) training is a rapidly evolving capability across many areas of the commercial sector with exponential growth in healthcare simulation. Synthetic environments allow trainees to immerse themselves in scenarios with a high degree of environmental realism, providing a flexible training modality that can be customized and adapted to their dynamic training needs while targeting “high consequence, low occurrence” events. Technological advancements in XR hardware have removed many of the traditional barriers to adoption: cost, expertise, and bandwidth. Medics now have an on-demand solution that will fundamentally change learning methods moving forward. This type of training will be critical in advancing skills to keep pace with the growing complexity of modern medicine. It is imperative that medics understand the different forms of XR training - Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR) and how best to leverage each one to maximize the learning benefit while avoiding training “scars.” This presentation will explore XR training concepts and provide practical considerations for accelerated learning, skill acquisition, and expertise development. We will first discuss the current landscape of XR training methodologies for prehospital medicine, delineating virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies for medical simulation. We will discuss the complementary utility of XR solutions, describing practical use cases for XR in current operational medical curricula. We will outline best practices for orienting first-time trainees to an XR training session via live demonstration of a VR EMS medical scenario. We will conclude with a Q&A session to address any specific questions from the audience and to stimulate discussion and a deeper understanding of EMS training methodology.
