How are we building trust with the communities we serve? Signal Ohio CEO Rita McNeil Danish said it best while speaking at the Columbus Metropolitan Club forum this week.

“We are constantly in touch with the community. We are constantly doing surveys. We are constantly reaching out. We are doing library hours to connect with the community who may not have internet access. We are making sure we meet the community where they are so that we can build that trust with them. So that we can explain to them how we can be a trusted source, the power of information…Let’s go back to grassroots. Let’s go back to the front porch. Let’s talk about the issues that matter to them, what is important to them. And let them know that we hear them.”

In a Signal Cleveland investigation, our talented staff explored a network of overseas investors who bought over 100 homes in Cleveland.

The team analyzed hundreds of property transactions, local housing court records, documents from a Swedish lawsuit that had been translated into English and business records from Ohio and Sweden.

What they learned is compiled in the "Cleveland For Sale" series, which explores what can happen when an influx of investors come to a majority-renter city.

Signal Ohio's work was recently featured by Poynter on how we are fighting news deserts.

“It’s all part of a growth process where we begin to identify what is important to our readers,” CEO Rita McNeil Danish said. “We make sure we survey our readers on what they like, what they don’t like and what’s important to them, so we can keep our pulse on those readers and meet them where they are.”

Signal Ohio is one of three nonprofit newsrooms featured in this Poynter Institute article.
