PORTSDOWN RECORDS is a DIY record label aimed at elevating the standard of our underground music scene in Singapore to the region. PORTSDOWN RECORDS, formerly known as PlayStopRewind, was started by a group of friends who believed strongly in producing quality shows and gigs for the underground music scene in Singapore back in 2006, with hopes to discover and elevate the status of promising unfoun
d bands and talents and be the bridge for them to achieving higher market potential through their performances. We have organised underground shows & festivals for the scene and has helped uncover potential talents with our initiatives. Some of these bands we 'found', like Duxton Plains and The Oslo Castaways, moved on from being 'unfound' to playing shows at Baybeats, MOSIAC and other huge festivals. Now, reigniting the flame after a hiatus, the mission of the collective, albeit unchanged, holds to mentor and discover potential bands by giving them an opportunity to learn the ropes of marketing and building the band to achieve new heights. You teach a man how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.". Some of the highlights of the label include The FULL FLIGHT Series. It held at the now defunct Gashaus and also the old SCAPE Youth Park back in 2006 and 2007. It is a month-long series of shows that provides up and coming bands the opportunity to perform with more established bands, like Kate of Kale, Plainsunset, Objection Overrule and many others, thus expanding their network of friends. This series has also gotten a lot of recognition and mention from the avid gig goers and also giving us the opportunity to work with the National Youth Council for their Youth Changemakers Grant and also a collaboration effort with Imran Ajmain's Beats Society in trying to infuse Hip Hop into our usual lineups. Currently, we are setting up a podcast, The Portsdown Playlist, to showcase bands from across the region. This podcast hopes to introduce a new platform for bands and open up new music to audience to discover. We hope to collaborate more with the other labels around the region for The Portsdown Playlist and engage audiences across the region from places like Malaysia and Indonesia to Japan and Australia. Besides 'The Portsdown Playlist', the record label hopes to also mentor and manage a few bands to achieve success, which includes goal-setting and planning for their marketing and EP production. This record label also hopes to create a family with the bands we take in and help push and improve one another to succeed.
