Coastal Flooding

Among the hazards for those living or working in immediate or near coastal areas is that of coastal flooding. Coastal flooding occurs when ocean water moves into coastal areas, and is fundamentally different from flooding due to heavy precipitation, sometimes termed fresh water flooding. Fresh water flooding can occur in any area, but is more likely in low lying areas and near rivers or streams, not necessarily near the coast. Thinking of taking your boat south to the West Indies for a winter of sailing among the tropical islands of the West Indies? Each fall, hundreds do. Starr’s pilothouse has a ship’s bridge feel to it. Not many power voyaging vessels put 100,000 sea miles under their keels — a figure that includes multiple Pacific crossings. For the Northern Marine 75 Starr, owned by Don and Sharry Stabbert, that kind of mileage has become routine as the Stabberts have voyaged to more than 18 countries around the world. The Coast Guard rescued a mariner Monday afternoon from a sailing vessel taking on water 155 miles east of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay command center watchstanders received a report of the 73-year-old man aboard the 33-foot sailing vessel Freyja Sunday night and reported that due to heavy weather his vessel was taking on water and needed assistance.

A Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and an HC-130 Hercules crew launched and hoisted the mariner from the vessel.

After the mariner was hoisted, the helicopter crew transported the survivor to Wilmington, North Carolina. There were no reported injuries.

Finnish Tapio Lehtinen, racing in the Golden Globe Race, had passed the gate at Cape Town was chasing the significant lead of Simon Curwen when Lehtinen’s boat, Asteria, suddenly flooded to deck level in five minutes and sank in 20 minutes. It was enough time for him to grab his ditch bag, set off the EPIRB and get into his life raft but not enough time to determine what caused the sinking. Lithium batttery safety. The issue of lithium battery safety has gained importance as lithium batteries are increasingly used aboard voyaging boats.
