"Though [the podcast episode] was recorded in April, Chris Pine addressed the future of Star Trek, which Paramount has remained committed to making despite minor studio upheaval.

"Pine said he’d "love to" be a part of the next installment. "I’m the last person to find anything out," he says. "I know Paramount is coming out of having restructured a bit and hopefully when the dust settles, something concrete will come out of it and we’ll get to work."

If six episodes of High Score on Netflix weren't enough to slake your thirst for documentaries about the creative spirit in the gaming industry, Matthew recommends you check out "Playing Hard," if it's available in your region on Netflix.

Playing Hard follows the development of For Honor, and centers on Jason VandenBerghe, the eclectic man who served as the game's creative director during the game's development and the unique emotional toll of making games.

It's really a compelling watch, even if you're not into videogames. Check it out! https://www.netflix.com/title/81083880

Matthew here.

I love seeing movies in theaters. I will go alone if it means getting out of my partner's hair while they work in our home office, but for the most part, seeing the big new releases in the cinema isn't really all it's cracked up to be.

This isn't just about the experience being ruined by people who won't put their phones away or technical malfunctions in the cinema or the noise of farts and snacks, but about whether ALL movies are really worth being gated off as exclusive to the big screen for a 30-120 day period.

People get excited to have new pop works to consume and don't really care how and where, timed-theater-exclusivity simply withholds those works for arbitrary reasons, and has been sustained largely on the premise of people trying to keep up with casual conversations about a shared culture.

Maybe if cinema-going was a niche hobby supported by people of all kinds who value that experience intensely is the way to go, rather than resting its value entirely on being "the only way to see" the next MCU film or whatever Oscar nom is on the slate that month.

In July, AMC Theaters and Universal Pictures rocked the industry with their historic deal to collapse the traditional 90-day theatrical window to as little as 17 days before offering first-run feat…

Matthew wrote a thing.

"Spencer said Microsoft is thinking differently, implicitly suggesting that making their own Uncharted or their own God of War is not the core of their development strategy. "We know it's something that our fans want."

"Sometimes we get suggestions of, 'Where's your X game?' or, 'Where's your Y game?' But I don't think our goal is to replicate what other people have done. It doesn't help the industry to […] do exactly the same thing with their platforms, services, or content."

Matthew wrote a thing.

"Layden made his own suggestion: a return to the shorter, 12 to 15 hour, AAA game. “I would finish more games, first of all, and just like a well edited piece of literature or a movie, looking at the discipline around that could give us tighter, more compelling content."

At a fireside chat for GameLab Live, Shawn Layden suggested a return to shorter, 12 to 15 hour, AAA games. not justso he can finish more games, but as a means to reduce the spiraling costs of AAA game development.

"We have bigots trying their hardest to tear the game down for its inclusion of q***r characters. We’ve got the people who actually made the game putting their figurative fists up. We’ve got fans and professional critics trying to share their own takes on the game, good and bad and everything in between.

"It’s not enough that the game is selling well, and that most reviews are positive; you can’t fall out of line with that general consensus, without having to worry about whether or not a publisher will be looking over your shoulder, or if hundreds of fans will blow up your social media. It is not an environment that is conducive to critical discussion."

29/06/2020

"Most men in the industry now seem to actually believe and understand the seriousness of what's being alleged and what's been done, a response which you couldn't always rely on in the past. We're doing better at (mostly) treating survivors with respect, and (somewhat) sidelining their abusers.

"We're still trapped, however, in a tendency to personalise the whole thing; to treat it as a "bad apples" situation. Even men who are having genuine, heartfelt responses to revelations of abuse say things like "I wish I'd known, I wish I could have done something."

"They wish a Good Man (themselves) had been aware of the Bad Man and could have done something about his Bad Actions. That's a noble enough sentiment, but it's terribly naïve and ultimately unhelpful."

The story can't end with the outing of individual abusers -- ending predation in the games industry requires cultural and institutional change

This alleged imbalance turned out to be true and now it's setting the world of sports game fans on fire.

"It’s frustrating that in the past five years women have only reached a position where they can sometimes get to write the female characters; it’s even more infuriating that they often can’t even get into the room where people are deciding what those female characters will get to do.

"It seems to be that female voices are kept out of the ongoing narrative – worse, that even when they have the appearance of telling a narrative, it’s actually the narrative of a random different bloke who was in the writers summit a few months previously. What annoys me most is that nobody seemed to think “hey, we have seven ongoing Batman comics right now, and one of them isn’t being represented in the room."

The comics industry is currently having another movement. Cameron Stewart, Warren Ellis, Brendan Wright and Jason Latour have all been named by people in the comics industry across the last …
