Our frozen planet is melting – and changes in Antarctica are potentially both disastrous and far-reaching.
If the Thwaites ice shelf melts and slips into the ocean, it will raise global sea levels, hitting coastal communities around the globe.

We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic pollution crisis.
That’s the definitive conclusion of a new Greenpeace report released Monday that found that only five to six percent of plastics in the U.S. were actually recycled. [...] Greenpeace USA senior plastics campaigner Lisa Ramsden said in a press release emailed to EcoWatch. “But the data is clear: practically speaking, most plastic is just not recyclable. The real solution is to switch to systems of reuse and refill.”

Most plastic can't be legally recycled in the US according to Greenpeace. The nation should switch to reuse and refill systems instead, it suggests.

Extreme heatwaves have affected millions of people around the world this year. By 2030, a total of 1.9 billion people are expected to be exposed to heat stress, and this will hit city dwellers particularly hard. A simple way we could be helping cool our cities is through a process known as “urban greening” – adding vegetation such as trees, rooftop gardens and other green spaces into cities.

Cities are warming 29% faster than rural areas. Urban greening – raising levels of vegetation such as trees and rooftop gardens – is a way to counter this.

Many plants and animals are under threat due to human actions. Habitat loss and climate change are severely affecting species all around the globe. And losing these creatures, and the ones you’re about to meet, could have a devastating knock-on effect on the wider environmental world.

Clearly, the main solution is reducing the amount of plastic we use at the source, but people are also turning to technology, lateral thinking and even other species to find the answer to the monstrous behemoth of plastic on planet earth.

Here are five of the strangest solutions:

The plastic crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing planet earth. Here are five of the strangest solutions.

Apart from consuming less, recycling and repairing, can we find clothes and textiles which are more sustainable? And if you have to buy new clothes, which fabrics should you look out for? Here are six materials or innovations which could help in the drive for a more sustainable way of life.

From fast fashion to cotton, the list of ways we consume fashion that have an adverse effect on our environment and other species is a long one. BBC Earth looks at six types of material and innovations which could help in the drive for a more sustainable way of life.

There are thousands of small-scale, community driven initiatives making a huge difference in people’s lives and contributing to efforts to curb global warming.
The initiative is implemented in 127 countries by the UN Development Program, we want to highlight just five of the over 25,000 projects implemented since 1992.

If someone asked you to name a species in need of conservation, it wouldn’t take long for you to land upon the polar bear.
While they are not facing imminent extinction, the devastation caused to their habitats by climate change puts their long-term survival at risk and their numbers are predicted to decline by 30% by 2050.

It is estimated that there are 26,000 polar bears in the wild, living across countries that border the Artic Ocean, including Canada, Russia and Norway. While they are not facing imminent extinction, the devastation caused to their habitats by climate change puts their long-term survival at risk and...

The average global temperature in 2021 was about 1.11 (± 0.13) °C above the pre-industrial (1850-1900) levels. 2021 is the 7th consecutive year (2015-2021) where global temperature has been over 1°C above pre-industrial levels, according to all datasets compiled by WMO.

Although average global temperatures were temporarily cooled by the 2020-2022 La Niña events, 2021 was still one of the seven warmest years on record, according to six leading international datasets consolidated by the World Meteorological Organization. Global warming and other long-term climate ch...

An equally key part of bringing CO₂ levels down is putting atmospheric carbon back where it came from. Carbon capture and storage technology is a vital tool in sectors where CO₂ emissions are essentially unavoidable, such as in heavy industrial processes like steel works. But its high costs and energy usage make it an imperfect solution.

The ocean and marine mammals could be an overlooked global carbon sink to help tackle climate change, write two experts.

The fashion industry has a dark side, a lot darker than many of us realise. It is one of the worst polluters and wreaks havoc on our environment in countries across the world, affecting human health and wildlife with dire consequences. Many fibres that are sold in well-known shops on the high street cause harm to species - and we’re not talking about the direct impact of the fur trade.

Plastic has even been found in the deepest point on Earth, the Mariana Trench, 11,000m below the surface. An estimated 8 million metric tonnes of plastic waste enters the world’s oceans every year – where it stays forever.

There is no corner on Earth where we will not find plastic trash – no matter how remote. On the slopes of the Himalayas, on the beaches of the uninhabited Henderson Island in the south Pacific, even Antarctica isn’t spared. And nowhere is plastic more of a headache than the oceans. While litter ...

One of the most important recent milestones has been the recognition in July 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly of the human right to water and sanitation. The Assembly recognized the right of every human being to have access to enough water for personal and domestic uses, meaning between 50 and 100 litres of water per person per day.

Fresh water sustains human life and is vital for human health. There is enough fresh water for everyone on Earth. However, due to bad economics or poor infrastructure, millions of people (most of them children) die from diseases associated with inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene.  ...

The UN’s groundbreaking work in adopting the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention stands as a defining moment in the extension of international law to the vast, shared water resources of our planet.

Life itself arose from the oceans. The ocean is vast, some 72 per cent of the earth's surface. Not only has the oceans always been a prime source of nourishment for the life it helped generate, but from earliest recorded history it has served for trade and commerce, adventure and discovery.

Progress on cutting emissions in shipping has been slow. In fact, emissions are no lower now than they were ten years ago. The sector’s record is under scrutiny at COP26 – the latest UN climate summit in Glasgow. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) – the UN body charged with delivering international shipping’s strategy on tackling climate change – has a target to cut emissions by 50% by 2050.

Maritime transport must cut its emissions by a third this decade and get on a path to zero emissions before 2050. The technology is there - but will the industry make the switch in time?

Record atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations and associated accumulated heat have propelled the planet into uncharted territory, with far-reaching repercussions for current and future generations, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
