NPA SADDENED BY DEATH OF ALDERMAN TOM MTINE

It is with deep sorrow that Ndola Press Association (NPA) receives the news of the passing of a true legend, TOM MTINE, at the age of 97. Alderman MTINE's life was a remarkable journey filled with achievements and contributions that have left an indelible mark on Ndola, Zambia, and beyond.

TOM MTINE's legacy is woven into the fabric of our community. He was not only one of Zambia's earliest known millionaires but also a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in the business and sports landscape of our nation. As Chairman of the Lonrho Group, he managed 53 local companies, showcasing his remarkable business acumen.

Mr. MTINE's influence extended to the realm of sports, where he served as the First Chairman of Zambia Airways and became the First Black Mayor of Ndola. His dedication and passion for football led him to become the First Black African to run the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) after independence. His contributions to the game earned him the honor of becoming an Honorary Member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

FIFA recognized Mr. MTINE's dedication and impact on Zambian football during its Centenary Celebration in 2004, a testament to his enduring influence.

On his 96th birthday, Mr. MTINE shared invaluable wisdom with journalists from the Ndola Press Association. He emphasized the virtues of perseverance, sacrifice, and humility as the keys to a long and meaningful life. His words continue to inspire us all.

Mr. MTINE's journey from working in the government to the private sector and rising to manage a group of companies exemplifies his commitment to self-improvement and progress. His career spanned various sectors, from bookkeeping to public relations, and his contributions to the business world were unparalleled.

We must also remember his courageous role as a special envoy for President Kenneth Kaunda, delivering a classified letter for the release of the revered freedom fighter, Nelson Mandela. This act of bravery in the face of danger speaks volumes about his character.

The Ndola Press Association mourns the loss of a true icon, a man who blazed trails and left an indomitable legacy. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his presence. The memory of TOM MTINE will forever be etched in our hearts, and his contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

NPA AND BLOGGERS ZAMBIA HOLD DIGITAL RIGHTS MEET UP

COPPERBELT Minister Elisha Matambo says the Government is determined to address concerns surrounding the cyber security Act and cyber crimes Act number 2 of 2021 which were enacted in hurry.

Mr. Matambo said the Government was in the process of addressing the concerns surrounding internet laws and policies and this was because the Government wants to promote freedom of expression in the country.

He said it was saddening that some laws in the past were enacted aimed at fixing certain individuals.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by provincial deputy permanent secretary Daniel Kamenga at a workshop on the state of the internet in Zambia organized by Bloggers of Zambia and the Ndola Press Association (NPA) in Ndola.

“Sometimes we create laws and rules to fix certain individuals and that is where we have been missing it. It is high time that Zambians put the Zambian people at heart whenever we are coming up with certain laws and this is the concern of the government which is why we have started reviewing that Act.

I don’t understand why people rush into enacting some laws, especially that they are running towards the elections,” he said.

He said the cyber security and cyber crimes Acts had the potential to impact press freedom and freedom of expression hence the need to quickly address the concerns and return the freedom of expression the country wants.

Bloggers of Zambia chief executive officer Richard Mulonga has called for the implementation of the Data Protection Act which would address data breaches and data harvesting that was going on.

Mr. Mulonga said his organization had been calling for the cyber security Act that would govern the internet space in the country in a way that it safeguarded citizens from cyber crimes and also make the internet accessible and safe for everyone to use.

“Our conversations should go beyond the cyber security Act there is ICT Act, data protection Act which is a very good Act. The data protection Act has a section that exempts whistleblowers and journalists from arrests and prosecution when they have a certain type of data so our role is not to criticize but our role is where law and policy can be enhanced so that we can all access the internet and participate in growing our democracy and participate in strengthening our digital economy," he said.

And NPA president Frank Ching’ambu said the cyber security and cyber crimes Acts had threatened the smooth operations of the media because of the penalties that comes with it.

“I am sure everyone will agree with me that this really sends shivers to journalists and the larger extent it is an infringement on the freedoms of the press but we are glad that the Government has already started the process of reviewing and revising this Act to ensuring that it is in such a manner that does not affect the operations of the media and other members of society,” he said.
Some of the invited stakeholders included ZICTA Copperbelt officer, Zambia persons with Disabilities, SACCORD, Copperbelt trade and Development, Voice of Children Zambia, Zambia Women's Lobby, Lin youth foundation, operation young Vote, Human Rights Commission, and AJUDE among others.

Do Join us in commemorating the 1st anniversary of the Ndola press Association NPA it is in this auspicious Month last year that members decided to restructure and reorganize the Club then into an association.

In as much as we have powers to regulate the affairs of scribes in the district, the association was established to champion journalism affairs in the district and indeed to defend our freedoms.

We have managed to register the association, we are the only Journalist grouping with active bank accounts in the country.

We have sold and continue selling our association to other key stakeholders in the country and beyond.

We are the only Journalist grouping that is going the enterprise way, all things being equal, we may be commencing our agricultural projects on our own piece of land very soon

*PRESS STATEMENT *
(for Immediate Release).................................................................

August 9th, 2022 Ndola -The Ndola Press Association -NPA is appalled with the behaviour of protesting bus drivers and their conductors at Ndola's Mulungushi bus station which has resulted in the injury of one of our Members Ms. Charlotte Sichunda.

It is unfortunate that Sichunda has been injured while performing her noble duty of informing the nation on an important matter.

Ms. Sichunda has since been rushed to Ndola Teaching Hospital for medical attention by officers from the Road Transport and Safety Agency - RTSA who were on the scene, and her camera was secured by ZANIS.

Ms. Sichunda was this morning doing her professional duty covering Copperbelt bus Operators who had run amock with police over the reduced bus fares where our member was caught in the mix and hit with a stone.

It is unfortunate that the drivers and their conductors resorted to throwing stones and among other objects while Minister of Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali was addressing their leadership.

in which one landed on our member who is also an employee of Diamond TV resulting in serious bleeding.

Information reaching is that Ms.Sichunda was not only injured but verbally harassed by some unruly bus drivers conductors.

We want to remind our sources and the general public that Journalists are not harmful but neutral players who will ever be present on such gatherings for theirs is to inform educate and entertain.

It is actually the duty of everyone to protect Journalists as they execute their duties.

Further, we want to call on media houses to invest in the safety of Journalists even as they are deployed to perform their role of informing, educating and entertaining the masses.

We call upon the bus Operators association to term their members and dialogue with relevant stakeholders on the matter rather than resorting to run throwing stones on innocent citizens.

In the same vein, we call upon the police to move in and bring the culprits to book as letting them go Scot free is a threat to free and independent media landscape.

We commend the medical team at Ndola Teaching Hospital for the swift attention given to our member.

An attack on one journalist is an attack on all journalists.

NPA DONATES TO FLOOD VICTIMS

Ndola, March 7 ,2022 --

Ndola Press Association- NPA has launched its call to Action Programme by donating to flood victims in Ndola's Chipulukusu whose houses collapsed due to heavy rains.

The Journalists led by NPA president, Frank Chinga'mbu donated 73 mini Matresses, Second hand Clothes, shoes, beddings and other assorted items.

Speaking to the victims, NPA members gave words of encouragement and acknowledged the emotional toll, the loss of homes, property, and time from income generating activities the disaster caused in their lives.

And Mr. Ching'ambu said the NPA team chose to reach out to the affected families in a tangible way because many times Journalists have done so intangibly, through story telling.

Mr. Ching'ambu added that he is happy that the association was part of the solution to the many hardships that the displaced families are going through.

He expressed delight that at least the families that have been spending nights on the floor will have comfort on the mattresses, mini as they may be.

Mr. Ching'ambu said although the donation might not completely alleviate the sufferings the affected families are grappling with, the items will,in a small way have a positive impact on the victims.

"While this aid we bring may not meet all of your current needs, we believe it is a step in the right direction for us as a media association we want to change the narrative where we do not only end at reporting but rather going a step further by rendering a helping hand to those in need," he said.

The NPA leader has since appealed to cooperating partners, the church, business entities among other stakeholders to join hands with NPA to reach out to the affected families, and others facing the same hardships.

More than 200 affected families are housed at a camp mounted by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU.

Meanwhile, the victims commended NPA for extending a helping hand in times like this one when they need a lot of help.

They heaped blessings on the NPA leadership and its membership for the good gesture.

adding that life has not been easy ever since the calamity befall them and that they will have peaceful and comfortable nights going forward.

The newspaper was renamed the Zambian Mail and subsequently the Zambia Daily Mail in 1970. The paper soon became a mouthpiece for the government, publishing official statements and press releases, while being instructed to become an "instrument in nation building".

A number of changes have since taken place. Sunday Mail and Financial Mail were introduced to widen the scope of coverage. The Financial Mail has since been phased out.

Their passion for Journalism is unmatched. They had an opportunity to interact with president of Ndola Press Association-NPA, Frank Ching'ambu.

They are pupils at Yengwe combined school in BwanaMkubwa constituency in Ndola district.

They asked a few questions regarding journalism, and I believe I was of great help to all their questions.
