Most of my “ah-ha” moments have come from intimate conversations with friends where we talk about everything and nothing all at the same time. And in the South a lot of times those conversations happen during a porch sittin’ where you gather on the porch sippin’ your favorite libation while doing some truth sayin’ to one another. Each of us have lived experiences that make us all very knowledgeable in various areas and one doesn’t have to have an important title or live in a metropolitan area to inspire each other. That is if we actually listen and talk to one another instead of having our heads buried in our devices. Perhaps after all of that pontificatin’ I should introduce myself… I’m Desirée, a digital storyteller who loves to ask unsuspecting people deeply personal questions as much as I love sippin’ fun & tonics with friends (the autocorrect version of “gin & tonic” sounds more spirited so I’m sticking with it). A Couple of Lindas podcast came to fruition because I wanted to continue my journey of cultivating deeper relationships through conversations, reach all of the Lindas out there that have no idea what they’re doing and tell them it’s okay, as well as find answers to all the random life questions I have. Such as…
1) Have we lost the art of authentic conversation, is everyone out here not listening and just waiting to talk? B) Why does everyone try to act like racism and xenophobia only exists in the South? Hunny, every state is a mess, it’s not just a southern issue and all y’all problematic af too, mkay. Note to self: be like Vermont. But ya know, less of an alcoholic. iii) What’s putting a smile on your face this week, but also which Linda do you think needs some direction in their life? Article IV) Authentic Southern accents are the best. I know that’s not a question, but I really want to hear more actual southern voices telling their stories and speaking their truth. Folks with southern roots rarely get to see/hear themselves reflected in media and pop culture that isn’t a caricature or have a horribly exaggerated accent and it’s clear that we are hungry for visibility with the success of S-Town and it’s microscopic look at rural lives. We want to hear our voices, our authentic accents through the speakers/headphones, not just the watered-down mid-Atlantic humdrum we hear everywhere. Most podcasts, that I listen to at least, are from the perspective of folks living in larger US cities. And although I get the references from having visited these cities, it would be nice to hear more from the southern or smaller town perspective because our voices are just as strong, brilliant, and they need to be heard. Basically I’d like to debunk the myth of what the rest of the world perceives Southern culture to be while uplifting our heritage (as complicated as that heritage is and continues to be…)
Sooo from one Linda to another… cheers, pull up a chair on the porch, and sit a spell with A Couple of Lindas!
