We have been facing many events within our world. We’ve also been watching many deal with the loss of family whether from COVID-19, racism, gun violence, s*x trafficking, all forms of abuse and/or police brutality. All of these things taking place at the same time, in the middle of a pandemic can affect one’s state of being whether that be physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. The events taking place seem to have no immediate end and that alone is hard to process. In these circumstances, it’s important to know that we have a Father that cares and He is here to comfort us through.
Our Lord is the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). When we’re facing life’s difficulties we are vulnerable and have a void that needs to be filled. The world makes us believe we can find comfort in things such as alcohol, drugs, food, etc; while these things may provide temporary relief, they don’t compare to the comfort our Father gives. After the high is gone and the rush of dopamine fades we are left to deal with what is reality. God seeks to fill that void and speak to us. God is multi-faceted and the trials we face in life reveals different facets of Him. Allow God to show you He is a comforter (Isaiah 66:13). Though our Father is not physically present with us, we have the Holy Spirit within us. The Holy Spirit of God is called a Comforter because His nature is encompassing and one of encampment. In the beginning, the Holy Spirit hovered over the darken and formless earth. Just like the Holy Spirit hovered over the Earth, the Lord hovers over us, shielding and caring for us (Deuteronomy 32:9-11). God’s comfort is something we experience in His presence (Matthew 11:28). In God’s presence we find peace, joy, strength, and hope (Romans 15:13). Comfort isn’t necessarily a solution to our problems but what we need to continue living through them. The word of God also says that “Our God is a consuming fire.”, implying that He’s able to burn away all the residue of our pain, giving us hope for our future. When we choose to come to Him, we are only giving Him permission to be everything He always is. Sit before the Lord and rest in His presence. Allow Him to show you all of who He is.
