As of recent estimates, about 21.4% of Ugandans live in poverty, down from nearly 56% in 1992.

Poverty remains more prevalent in rural areas, where the majority of the population resides and relies on subsistence agriculture. Factors such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities contribute to persistent poverty.

Additionally, regional disparities are pronounced, with Northern and Eastern Uganda experiencing higher poverty rates compared to the Central and Western regions. Efforts to alleviate poverty include government programs, international aid, and initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and economic development.

Despite progress, challenges such as high population growth, unemployment, and climate change impacts continue to hinder poverty reduction efforts.

The literacy rate in Uganda stands at approximately 76.5%, with notable disparities between different demographics.

Men have a higher literacy rate, around 82.6%, compared to women at about 71.5%. Urban areas exhibit higher literacy levels than rural regions due to better access to educational resources and infrastructure.

Despite improvements driven by initiatives like the Universal Primary Education program, which offers free primary education, challenges such as limited resources, teacher shortages, and socio-economic barriers persist.

The youth literacy rate is higher, reflecting progress among younger populations.

Both the Ugandan government and various NGOs continue to work towards enhancing literacy, recognizing its crucial role in the nation's socio-economic development.

Tea
Kenya is one of the world’s leading tea producers and exporters, with tea being the top foreign exchange earner for the country. In 2023, Kenya exported approximately 575 million kilograms of tea, generating around $1.2 billion in revenue. Kenyan tea is renowned for its strong flavor and is mainly exported to Pakistan, Egypt, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. The tea industry supports millions of small-scale farmers, contributing significantly to rural livelihoods.

Coffee
Coffee is another major export commodity for Kenya, known for its high-quality Arabica beans. In 2023, Kenya exported about 50,000 metric tons of coffee, earning approximately $240 million. The primary markets for Kenyan coffee include Germany, the United States, Belgium, and Sweden. The coffee industry, like tea, involves many smallholder farmers who benefit from the premium prices Kenyan coffee often commands due to its rich aroma and flavor.

Horticultural Products
Horticulture, particularly the export of cut flowers, fruits, and vegetables, is a rapidly growing sector in Kenya. The horticultural industry generated around $1.3 billion in 2023, with cut flowers accounting for the largest share. Kenya is the leading supplier of roses to the European Union, with major markets including the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Exports of fresh vegetables and fruits, such as green beans, avocados, and mangoes, also contribute significantly to the economy.

Textiles and Apparel
Kenya’s textile and apparel industry has seen substantial growth, especially under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which allows duty-free access to the US market. In 2023, the sector earned about $500 million in export revenue. Key products include garments, home textiles, and fabrics, with the United States being the primary market. The industry provides employment to thousands of Kenyans, particularly women, in both manufacturing and supply chain roles.
