"Born in Vietnam and raised in Orange County, California, Tommy Wu is a self-taught photographer who ventured into photography in his late 30s after a career as an engineer. Tommy’s work can be described as a cinematic capture of the deeply personal, and his ability to capture the color and movement in somewhat muted spaces is a feature that takes Tommys’ work into the realm of fine art."

"I am a child of hope.

There was no return ticket back to Gujarat - North India. One had to survive malaria, influenza, scarlet fever, and diarrhea on the initial boat trip to get to Africa. My grandparents on both sides became fond of the beauty of Kenya, worked the land, built homes and raised expansive families.

I am a child of the fight for Independence.

My grandparents and parents survived the independence from British Colonial rule of India as well as 16 years later the uprising for Kenyan Independence.

I am a child of survival." - MEERA MANEK

Lyla dives deeper, “Hozhó is remembering that you are a part of the Earth’s brilliance.” She explains that her grandmother knows this through the language she speaks and the work she has done as a midwife “until she became fluent in the language of suffering mothers, fluent in the language of joyful mothers, fluent in the language of handing glowing newborns to their creators”. Her grandmother further illuminates that hozhó isn’t something you experience on your own in some perceived isolation. “It is interbeauty.”

For those who may not be aware, there is a species of bee known as the blue calamintha. This bee is as you’d expect a bit blue in color unlike your average bee and for a while now has been seemingly gone from anyone’s view. This kind of bee is so rare to spot that many in the scientific world th...

"Blackhorse, 28, pored over books about her culture, choosing the issues she cared most about. Among them: the elderly, protecting tribal land and opposing the installation of pipelines. One day, she told her family, she would run for a Navajo Nation Council delegate position, or even for president."

Valentina Blackhorse, 28, saw her job as an administrative assistant for the Navajo Nation as a steppingstone to someday becoming its president.

The reduction in ship traffic in the ocean, which Barclay compares to a “giant human experiment”, has had scientists racing to find out the effect on marine life.

Drop in underwater noise levels allows scientists to study effects of quieter oceans on marine wildlife

As working parents, my husband and I have made it a priority to carve out time to care for ourselves (this often means waking up at 6am to get some alone time!) But it’s so worth it when we can approach our day from a more balanced place even when the news is unnerving." -- Moontentco

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said the low number of new cases in recent days “does give us confidence that we have achieved our goal of elimination”.

He warned that “elimination” did not mean there would be no new cases, “but it does mean we know where our cases are coming from”.

How will Covid-19 reshape luxury markets?

This article considers:
1. Globalization might affect consumer choices. Western consumers in particular may pivot to buying more brands that are designed and manufactured in their country to keep money in their local economy.
2. Bi-annual shows might go bye-bye.
3. A break with collection seasonality could quickly follow.

For luxury businesses, accelerating the changes started before COVID-19 is important. But adapting to the new trends the crisis has created also matters to bounce back stronger.

Davis described the myriad cultures on our planet as the "ethnosphere", by which he means the "sum total of all thoughts and intuitions, myths and beliefs, ideas and inspirations brought into being by the human imagination."

Ancient wisdom in the modern world can save us from the dangers of climate change, argues Wade Davis. The Canadian anthropologist has spent a lifetime looking into what Indigenous peoples of the world can teach us. Now, 10 years after his 2009 Massey lectures called 'The Wayfinders,' he looks back o...

According to reports, coronavirus is disproportionately affecting African Americans in the US, with Kristen Clarke, committee president and executive director of Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law calling it “a social, economic and racial justice issue”. It is a similar picture in the UK, with research suggesting that BAME groups are being hit harder in the pandemic.

Henson launched the campaign on social media, saying: “This campaign is for under-served communities experiencing life-changing events related to, or triggered by, the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Henson added: “In the African American community, we’ve been taught to tough it out, hide our suffering, but this is something none of us have ever experienced, and no one should suffer in silence.”

Here’s something I think you’ll find quite interesting… These crazy images were created by French artist Jean-Marc Cote, and a few others back in 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1910.

They were asked to imagine what life would be like in the year 2000. According to Collective-Evolution, these artworks were originally in the form of postcards or paper cards enclosed in cigarette and cigar boxes.

The images depict the world as it was imagined it would be like in the year 2000. Some of these unique illustrations are actually quite accurate vision of the current era today, including farming machines, robotic equipment, and flying machines. Now we haven’t started riding giant seahorses yet, although it does look like one hell of a good time.

Here's something I think you'll find quite interesting... These crazy images were created by French artist Jean-Marc Cote, and a few others back in 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1910. The point being.. Well, basically they were asked to imagine what life would be like in the year 2000. According to Collecti...

As of April 10, 2020, the 50 employees who have passed as reported by their family members and loved ones:

22 are paraprofessionals
21 are teachers
2 are administrators
1 is a facilities staffer
1 is a guidance counselor
1 is a food service staffer
2 central office employees
1 employee listed above was also staffing a REC

"This is painful news for too many of our communities-each number represents a life, a member of one our schools or offices, and the pain their loved ones are experiencing is unimaginable. We will be there to support our students and staff in any way they need, including remote crisis and grief counseling each day. We mourn these losses and will not forget the impact each person had on our DOE family," Chancellor Richard A. Carranza said.

21 New York City public school teachers are among the 50 Department of Education employees who have died of coronavirus, DOE said Monday.

"Part of the Cheval Blanc collection, the swanky 115-room hotel will sit at the corner of Rodeo Drive and Little Santa Monica Boulevard. While this area is replete with high-end hotels, including the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel and the Beverly Wilshire, the Cheval Blanc is vying to be even more exclusive.

The hotel will feature oversized suites, two swimming pools—one of which is a private penthouse pool—plus a private club. Rather than focusing on banquets or conference facilities, LVMH will capitalize on its nearby network of high-end restaurants, spas and retailers to sate guests. Indeed the Louis Vuitton and Dior boutiques just a stone’s throw away on—where else—Rodeo Drive."

The mental image of LA is a skyline obscured by smog. But on Tuesday, LA saw some of the cleanest air of any major city in the world, according to IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company which also monitors pollution levels in cities around the globe.

With the state of California under a stay-at-home order for the last several weeks because of the threat of coronavirus, Los Angeles' notoriously dirty air has dramatically improved.

"In some ways, it’s a good thing. We need to wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and not everyone owns the materials (or has the seamstress skills) to make their own. Many brands promise that proceeds will be donated to charities, or go toward making more masks for those working on the front lines. And, when it comes to smaller companies, selling masks might be a way stay afloat, and pay workers who would otherwise be laid-off or furloughed."

"The German federal government is stepping in with a sweeping aid package for the country’s creative and cultural sectors. The staggering €50 billion ($54 billion) in backing comes less than two weeks since Germany first made its promise of support.

“We know the hardships, we know the desperation,” said culture minister Monika Grütters in a statement. “The cultural sector in particular is characterized by a high proportion of self-employed people who now have problems with their livelihoods.” She said that the federal government is “wholly aware” of the importance of the creative industries, adding that “[h]elp is coming as quickly and with as little bureaucracy as possible!”"

The German government is providing a major stimulus package to support its creative and cultural industries.
