Okay so this is a much more controversial topic than usual & I’ve been contemplating on how to discuss it for quite a while. I may feel a strong sense of free will but I don’t personally believe that we have free will, as the whole concept falls to pieces when examined scientifically & logically. We usually say things like, “if I could go back and change that one thing that I did (or said), given everything I know now, I would”, & you probably would if you had the ability to time travel. But, could the person who you were back then have known better? No. Would you have said anything different or acted differently given the state of mind that you were in at the time? No. You’ve grown to develop yourself in ways that makes you different from who you were & as a result, you feel as though you could have acted differently. You look at other people who behave in immoral ways & think, “I could never be like that?”, but if you were them - atom for atom - making up every bit of their biology, you probably would act in the same way. I know, this sounds ludicrous, it was hard for me to grasp in the beginning too. We feel as though we are in control because of the information that comes into our awareness, & thus, claim moral agency over it. But how baffling is it to know that our awareness is a tiny part of our biological makeup & our decisions are pre-determined before even coming into our consciousness (as many experiments prove). We have grown to believe & feel that we have free will as it does have its evolutionary benefits, however, objectively, it is so far from the mind-boggling truth. @ Planet Earth
