Choosing the right audio interface

An audio interface is the piece of equipment that allows your voice from the microphone to be recorded into your computer software. Luckily two of these options have built in recorders on top of computer connectability.

1. I’m going to start with my favorite, the Rodecaster Pro II by Rode. I recently bought this interface and haven’t looked back. The quick version is that the Rodecaster Pro II has all of the built in processing you need to make your voice sound great without having to use extra effects from your computer. You can record up to 4 mics and a phone through bluetooth if you have a guest calling in. Anther huge advantage is that you can record and edit directly on the interface. I prefer to edit after I transfer to the computer, but it sure is great to have both options. $699
2. The Tascam Mixcast 4 is new to the market. It has lots of great reviews and seems to do most things the Rodecaster can do but for a little less $. At only $399 the Tascam is quite attractive.
3. On the budget side of the list we have the Vocaster One by Focusrite at $149. This is an affordable, basic solution to get one mic up and running quickly .
4. If you need an extra mic for a guest or co-host try the Vocaster Two, the mic version of the One. $249

Choosing the right mic

Mic choice is very important. As a podcast fan, I’m quick to turn off a podcast that doesn’t sound good even if the content is very interesting to me. Luckily there are plenty of affordable and readily available mic options to choose from.

1. The least expensive and a personal favorite of mine is the PodMic by Rode. At only $99 this mic outperforms plenty of more expensive mics. My favorite part, aside from the price, is the built in wind screen to keep plosives to a minimum without have to add a foam screen on top.

2. Another great option is the Shure MV7. For around $250 you get a great podcast mic with both USB and XLR outputs. This means you can plug directly into your computer without an audio interface and take advantage of the supplied audio software to compress and level out your voice.

3. The EV RE20 needs no introduction. It’s the mic you probably recognize from television broadcasts or video podcasts. It’s been a go to mic since the late 1960’s and provides the low frequency presence that defines a broadcast microphone. These however are the most expensive on the list at $449. Another drawback is the size. You’ll also have to buy a separate shock mount to keep it steady.

4. The Shure SM7b is also one of the most widely used microphones for voice. On top of having the great low frequency response the SM7B provides great presence and clarity for voice. The go for around $399
