Public Service Announcement-Trail Closures in South Valley Trails System

Teton Basin Ranger District to begin fuels reduction treatments on South Valley Project

The South Valley Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project is a large-scale effort to reduce the risk of wildfire to the community of Victor, Idaho, through treating the fuels along the National Forest and private property boundary identified as the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). National Forest lands adjacent to private property can support frequent and intense wildfires, and the predominant south-to-southwest winds of the area would likely push wildfires toward the community. The combination of prevailing winds and high density of homes results in a high risk to values in this WUI. The Tie Canyon wildfire of 2016 illustrated the need to treat fuels in proximity to the private property adjacent to the National Forest boundary. The South Valley Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project will include multiple phases of treatments, including commercial timber harvest, mechanical thinning and prescribed fire on over 3,000 acres of forest land adjacent to the communities of Teton Valley Idaho.
This phase of the South Valley Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project consists of reducing ladder fuels, increasing crown spacing and reducing dead and down accumulation along portions of the National Forest and private property boundary to reduce the risk of wildfire. Fuels reduction treatments for this phase include hand thinning, pruning and piling the generated slash to create a fuel break along the Forest boundary.

Mike Harris Trail System – Hazardous fuels reduction work will treat 475 acres of National Forest land encompassed by the Mike Harris trail system beginning as early as July 15. This treatment will include the removal of small diameter conifer trees, increasing crown spacing of larger conifer overstory, limbing of ladder fuels and removal of dead and down material.
During implementation, certain portions or loops of the Mike Harris trail system will be temporarily closed during the hours of sunrise to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, to allow crews to work and limit potential negative or harmful impacts to trail users.
The Teton Basin Ranger District asks that all trail users please follow posted trail closures during completion of this project. Signage and/or personnel will be on site to identify what sections of the trail system are closed each day, which will be changing as crews work through the area. Crews will be operating chainsaws and falling trees over the trails in closed sections, so it is imperative that forest users follow temporary trail restrictions for the safety of all.

Here’s a story worthy of this day of Dirt Church from the Lionshead Trail Work Weekend organized by the crews at Southwest Montana Mountain Bike Association and Corey Biggers.
Seriously, this one will go down in the record books or at least told around camp fires for years to come.
How about nearly 100 miles of trail cleared, well over a couple hundred of trees cleared AND that all took place in a matter of 2 days - yes, 2 days!
We’re still mentally digesting this and remember these trails are not exactly near any type of road or your favorite brew pub. These trails are high and deep.
From the Lionshead to the Centennials you now have some single track adventures to make thanks to legendary efforts of this group on bike, hike and horse.
Next level trail volunteering which has always been the case with this event but, this weekend was something special.
Absolutely amazing work and a huge round of thanks to all involved!
Holy Day of trail work! Thanks Corey!

It’s real. Stay hydrated, ride smart and ride higher ground.

The TMBA Weekend Regional Ride Report. If you didn’t have a clue how important Teton Pass was for business and recreation in our neck of the woods you most likely do now and the good news has the Pass scheduled to open Friday. For the most part, most to all trails on the Pass are reported to be open with the usual suspects at the highest north facing aspects holding patches of snow. Around the region temps will be a bit more friendly this weekend especially if you’re lucky enough to score a ride up high. If you’re looking for some fresh new adventures don’t look past the beautiful high CDT country roughly between Leadore and Salmon. Goldstone or Grizzly Hill/Goat Mtn. would be our first picks. Absolutely amazing amount of work being done by a small amount of trail volunteered! Thank you!! Keep the rides alive, pack the saw and happy trail hunting!

Definitely a warm enough weekend to pull off Stage 2 of the Dirt Diggler Trail Volunteered. 3 more miles cleared on some of the most rugged, wild and beautiful tread of the DeCoster Trail. Great to see all the tracks of previous day trail users from knobby to hoof on this section which definitely isn’t for everyone and that’s a good thing - you’ll still need to earn it here.
Stage 3 is coming up soon as we wait for a water crossing to drop below the hips 😆 Big thanks to ALL the Friends of the DeCoster keeping this ride alive.

The TMBA Weekend Regional Ride Report. Out with the snow and in with some hot summer ☀️ this weekend. That makes it about time to roll some 🎲 and go looking for some cool mountain tops around the region. Locally that higher calling from Teton Pass has a few issues mainly being access or lack of from here on the west side leaving us with other options like the increasingly popular Grove/Drake, S.F Horseshoe or some busy weekender laps on Mill Creek. If you’re itching for a little adventure on a beautiful drive out of town point it toward Sun Valley and the high line ride of Osberg Ridge. That’s it, that’s all for now. Keep the rides alive and that single track narrow n fast! Happy Trail Hunting!

A massive couple of days earlier this week with Adam Caulkins and his great crew from U.S. Forest Service-Bridger-Teton National Forest Kemmerer Ranger District Office giving us a Big Wonderful Wyoming tour of the Commissary Ridge Project deep in the beautiful and remote Wyoming Range.
This project is a mighty big one with no lack of support lining up to make this happen from Wyoming Pathways to Tread Lightly! leading the charge and covering the bases for something of this size.
It’s a massive project to say the least and one that will live on as a legacy for future generations to experience in this incredibly beautiful often overlooked mountain range. Great to see so many coming together to make this happen from private to government.
Stay tuned for opportunities to help with upcoming trail days this summer or please reach out to the Kemmerer Ranger District Office. All in for trails on public lands! Thanks to everyone involved this week.

We had a great weekend cleaning out another section of the DeCoster Trail. 7 + miles and 40 + trees cleared between Rammel Mtn Rd. and the North end of the Jackpine/Pinochle Loop Rd. As more and more trails buff out to all abilities you’ll still need to earn it here on this trail. It’s not for everyone but, definitely worth it for those that are experienced in backcountry riding and etiquette.
We’ll be tackling the remaining sections thru out the summer as stream levels drop so, please reach out if you would like to help.
Thanks to Wyoming Pathways and CBI Bikes for the support! Trail Volunteered!
Respect the Ride.

Thanks Bike Magazine for giving this issue light.
Booming recreational use of All user group trails and less funding makes zero sense especially since it’s a proven economic booster to communities supporting trails.

How declining recreation funding for federal land management makes for a worse trail experience.

Great weekend to get up into the clouds chasing snow lines. Sheep Cr. is just one of many incredible trails you can pedal and experience on a bike in the Lionshead region which is just a very short beautiful drive up the road from the Tetons.
Definitely a bit snow remaining on a majority of trails but, damn that shorter ride yesterday to higher ground was absolutely worth it!
These rides happen primarily from the efforts of the trail volunteered organized by the Southwest Montana Mountain Bike Association crew which holds one of the largest backcountry trail day events in the Northern Rockies each year in July. Please reach out to them for more information.

The TMBA Weekend Regional Ride Report. Nice to finally have some options around here going into National Trails Day weekend. From Horseshoe Canyon to the lower trails on Teton Pass and everything in between you can get your ride on. Mid Mtn up is still a line of defense for Old Man Winter across most of the region and we did hear something about the awesome Brewers Trail in Lander.
It’s also the time of the season when trail work needs to quickly follow the snow melt up. Plenty of volunteer trail work days across the region to join OR you can easily do your own thing with Trail Volunteered Daily (always carry a pack saw) A little Nip n Tuck goes a long way on trails that don’t win the popularity contest. Please keep single track single, pull a wheelie, keep the rides alive and happy trail hunting!
National Trail Volunteered Daily! Why not?

The TMBA Weekend Regional Ride Report. It’s finally rolling in the right direction across the entire region. Some areas are definitely further along with many miles of rideable trails like Helena, Pocatello, Copper City and Salmon. Lander should be on the radar with forecasted warmer temps this weekend - JBR pictured here.
The slow melt here and near the Tetons has opened up options in Horseshoe Canyon, high hopes for Aspen Trail, 7N Ranch, Sidewinder and Palisades Creek.
Typical Spring mountain weather thru the weekend so don’t forget the gear.
Respect the ride and happy trail hunting!

The TMBA Weekend Regional Ride Report. Damn, that ☀️ feels good! With the sun winning the battle going into the weekend and beyond we can expect the troops to be in full assault across the region. With that, early season favorites like Helena, Pocatello, Copper City and Salmon should be on your radar since they have and have had many, many trails open to spread out the rush to the hills. JBR in Lander is still the main game in town. Locally - this weekend - we’re still pretty limited with 7N Ranch, Sidewinder, S Fork Rim and some out n back on Channel Lock / S Bound. Rapid melt means mud! Respect the rides and if you venture down the road do your best to support the regional communities supporting trails. Throw that tailgate down and drink in some of that sunshine. Happy trail hunting!
