The Young HeArts Media Correspondents (YHMC) is a group of children trained in basic media production to purposely allow them to express their views on issues that affect them. YHMC evolved in May, 2008 when 20 children from Plan-assisted municipalities (Liloan, Libagon, San Francisco, Pintuyan and San Ricardo) were trained in Basic Media Literacy as Plan Philippines’ unified action to Plan’s glo
bal advocacy against violence in schools. The campaign was deemed more effective if children were the main advocates. The Young Hearts (YH) project began and is now a common project in Asian countries where Plan works: Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The original group underwent Advanced Media Training and continuous mentoring sessions under professional trainers from Anak TV, an NGO advocating responsible media for kids. They participated in the Young HeArts’ Festival in Manila that introduced them to the national media world. The group produced 2 TV plugs and 4 radio plugs some of which were aired nationally. The group was represented in the Bangkok Regional Festival where selected Philippine productions were showcased. The productions were then used in campaigns for Safe Schools in various school and community based activities. In April, 2010, Plan reinforced the YH with a new breed of children to replace members who had moved to other phases of their lives. The target participants, however, were from Liloan, Southern Leyte to enjoy easy access in mobilizing children. Barangays with active children’s organizations that can facilitate the selection and can support the group’s activities were considered. The criteria, however, sought to prioritize children not active in school and community activities and those who were least fortunate. The tight screening was conducted by child leaders, members of the Sangguniang Kabataan Municipal Federation (SKMF) and Municipal Children’s Association (MCA). Twenty five (25) neophytes from nine barangays were identified for training under Anak TV. July 26, 2010 caps their training and practicum through a recital/graduation ceremony that features several photographs, 11 PSAs and 7 MTVs produced by the 25 new members. The YHMC is a recognized member of the MCA and an affiliate of SKMF of Liloan. Aside from the 25 new media correspondents in Liloan, around 80 new members of YHMC from Plan areas in Northern Samar, Western Samar and Camotes, Cebu are now engaged in making thematic video PSAs. The issues depicted vary from child abuse, anti-trafficking, birth registration and environment among others.
