No larger than a golf ball, “Prayer Nuts” were tiny religious artifacts that served as portable altars. The detailed scenes were carved intricately out of boxwood rather than nuts, but the craftsmanship is still impressive, even today. Though miniscule, Prayer Nuts had working windows and hinges to conceal and reveal the inner beauty, and they were often anointed with aromatic oils.
