The story of Zelophehad’s daughters in this week’s parsha (Numbers 27 ) is one that we love at Inherit. It’s about challenging cultural norms, embodying bravery, leading with humility, and trusting God with our future. These daughters challenged the traditions of their forefathers and God heard the cry for justice.

This Shabbat, let’s reflect on the story of Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, Tirzah, and Moses and ask ourselves: how can we both uphold yet challenge traditions in our modern life?

Here’s your reminder that you are created *on* purpose and *with* a purpose by the God of the universe. King David reflects, “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it” (Psalm 139:14). If we catch ourselves being self-critical, let’s redirect ourselves to the truth of who God says we are ♥️ Share this with a friend who needs the reminder!

At our recent event with in Los Angeles, we had a meaningful conversation about epigenetics and about how we keep hate, past and present, from hurting our identity and hindering our purpose.

Inherit contributor Michelle Van Loon writes, “Our grandparents’ trauma is not a deterministic script for our lives.”

Check out the article that was the inspiration for our discussion below!

A few years ago, a family friend who knew me during my childhood remarked, “You’ve always been a brave little soldier.”

Almost 10 months into this war and it’s all too easy to lose hope. We’ve had to try to move on with our daily lives while still carrying an indescribable weight on our shoulders. It affects our posture–emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

Today, let’s reshape the narrative. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said, “There’s always hope. You can lose everything else in the world, but Jews never lose hope.” We know this war will end because we know our God and we know our history. We can’t wait for the celebrations that will happen when our hostages are rescued. We seek out the innumerable opportunities we have right now to fight for justice and stand up for Jewish rights.

Jewish journalist Ahad Ha’am famously said: “More than Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews.” Shabbat is more than just a routine, weekly celebration—it connects us with the generations of Jews who came before us and places us in a much grander narrative of God’s protection over us. Let’s hold on to that perspective this Shabbat!

Engaging in authentic dialogue that is both challenging and encouraging is like discovering gold. While we seek out good conversationalists, we should also strive to *be* good conversationalists. Even when the subject matter is difficult. Swipe through for a few of our tips. What would you add to this list?

Hate and contempt breed violence, and violence breeds more violence—so how do we get out of this cycle?

It’s in these times, when enemies seem to be greater in number than friends, that we need to lean on God. King David knew this when he penned the prayer, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2). We draw our security and peace from Him, and He gives us the strength to share it with others.

The word “mysticism” can sound alarm bells for us—but examining the origins of Jewish mysticism can both challenge our worldview and reframe the way we look at Judaism.

Inherit contributor Stephanie Hamman writes, “Not only is the mystical concept of a personal relationship with God grounded in the Hebrew Scriptures, but it is how God desires for us to experience Him.”

In reality, the truth about Jewish mysticism is much deeper. What if that truth has the power to forever change the way you look at Judaism and at you...

Has social media diminished the truth?

Jewish-American historian Deborah Lipstadt writes, “In an Internet age it is, at first glance, democratic to say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That is surely true. It is however a fatal step to then claim that all opinions are equal. Some opinions are backed by fact. Others are not. And those which are not backed by fact are worth considerably less than those which are.”

There’s no doubt misinformation and disinformation are on the rise—we’ve seen it during the pandemic, throughout election campaigns, woven into news coverage of the war in Israel and Gaza, and in conversations surrounding AI. It’s difficult to stay grounded when it seems everyone around us is receiving a different source of truth. But the Talmud reminds us that God is the source of truth—where He is found, there is truth (Shabbat 55a). As His people, we can stand firmly on the foundation of Him!

One way we can truly set Shabbat apart from the rest of the week is by taking a social media fast. Let’s challenge ourselves to silence our notifications and resist doom scrolling! Our feeds, our work, and our messages will still be there when we return—but our cups will be full and we will be rested.

See you Sunday, mishpocha!

Shayna, Atlanta

“To me, being Jewish is more than just a label. It means being part of a tradition, culture, and identity that connects us beyond geographical borders. It means fighting antisemitism in my community and online and using my voice for my people and the land of Israel. It means knowing and being known by my Jewish Messiah, Yeshua. That is where my true identity lies.”

Today we’re grateful for the freedom we enjoy in the United States and honor the great cost at which it came. We know this country is far from perfect, but we have an opportunity to work for its betterment, to speak up for those without a voice, and to love our neighbor. We’re also grateful for BBQs and a day off work 🤙 Happy 4th of July!

It’s a new month and the start of a new week! Whether you’re an avid goal setter or you’re more go-with-the-flow, starting a new season intentionally gives us something tangible to work towards.

When the people of Israel fled Egypt, God said “This month shall mark for you the beginning of the months; it shall be the first of the months for you” (Exodus 12:2). Marking the passage of time and the beginning of something new has always been central to our people.

Let this new month be a chance to gain a new perspective by looking at how far we’ve come and where we want to go. Share your goals with us below!

He was a millionaire. But he didn’t feel successful.

Inherit contributor Marc Stein shares, “We were in our attorney’s office signing the final documents to sell our company, poised to realize the largest payday of our lives. I was a 36-year-old with two partners who were only 10 years my senior. We had built a very successful company in just six years and were cashing in. My lifelong dream to be the ‘rich uncle’ of the family was manifesting right before my eyes and I had never been so miserable in my life.”

Find out how Marc reframed the idea of success—link below!

Sheryl Sandberg, former COO of Facebook, dedicated herself to creating a film called Screams Over Silence, which documents the atrocities committed on October 7. In an interview with journalist Bari Weiss, Sandberg shares:

“A month after October 7, I was on a walk with a really close friend who’s not Jewish, and I said, ‘Are you going to hide me?’ I literally said that to a good friend. This is real. This is real for us. And the problem is that even the most well-meaning people don’t see the antisemitism in front of them.”

Antisemitism isn’t an abstract, distant concept—it’s happening on our doorsteps. But what makes us a target also makes each of us uniquely equipped to confront misinformation and share our personal experiences. Let’s follow Sheryl’s example and, in the midst of fear, compassionately educate and foster discussions with the people around us.

Since October 7, many of us have either reconnected with our Jewish identity or have reaffirmed how central it is to our lives.

The 2024 Survey conducted by the American Jewish Committee found that 57% of US Jews feel more connected to their Jewish identity since Hamas waged war on Israel. In the face of violent attacks and hateful rhetoric, we become more connected to one another, to our heritage and traditions, and to our God. We love to see our resilience and interconnectedness showing!

Why is Jewish identity and community important to you?
