I checked out some Grey-tailed Tattler roost sites in Port Stephens during Tuesday’s high tide. Unfortunately I only could find 2 birds, including this one, and both of them were at Pindimar. They were wary and I couldn’t get close, and soon afterwards took off out of sight. In recent years there often have been 30+ birds at Pindimar and 100+ birds in all of Port Stephens. Currently we can account for 12 birds in the Port - that’s quite a comedown!

This Grey-tailed Tattler was posing quite nicely on The Wreck at Stockton (Newcastle NSW) on Sunday. But where were its mates? It was all alone and there were none at the Fern Bay roost site either, despite the conditions seeming quite favourable.

This website is under construction and many of the sections are incomplete (or in some cases not even started!). Please bear with us as we slowly work on something we now wish we had started a long time ago.

The number of Tattlers at roost site near Winda Woppa (in Port Stephens) has gone up from three over-wintering birds, to five. The two new arrivals are juveniles, looking very brown and spotty. Let’s hope they stick around. In most years, the numbers at Winda Woppa grow to about 10 birds, part of a contingent of 100+ birds in Port Stephens in summer.

Here's an example of agonistic behaviour (aggression) from a Grey-tailed Tattler to another one. The shots were taken at Yatsushiro in Japan in May 2014 where the birds were staging on their way to their breeding grounds.

This page is for people who are interested in Grey-tailed Tattlers. You are welcome to post news and images of any sightings of them but we are especially keen to know about behavioural observations and about large assemblages. If you see a Grey-tailed Tattler doing something interesting, tell us about it. If you see a group of more than 50 of them in Australia, tell us how many, where and when. All records from countries within the migration route between Australia and Russia are of interest especially if it involves an accurate count of them or any intra-species interactions.
