"GO OUTSIDE" - Lin Barrie

Lin Barrie is a Zimbabwean artist who graduated after a three year Fine Art Diploma in Printmaking at Durban Art College, with Painting, Ceramics and Sculpture as further disciplines.

Lin Barrie went on to gain experience in the world of commerce as a textile designer, travelling extensively to Europe and the Far East for business and pleasure.

In 1991, after returning to Zimbabwe from a trip to the Far East, having explored Chinese brushstroke painting and Indonesian batik techniques, she became a full time fine artist.

Lin Barrie believes everything is interconnected; animals, plants and people all entwined in the web of life. Although people move more and more across borders separating families, she thinks that family relationships ARE still as important as they used to be - technology allows us to instantly communicate, share cultural beliefs and strengthen conservation of culture and ecosystems, if we care enough to do so…

Her paintings are a reflection of the inspiration that I get from observing life in action, movement and colour. She believe that the abstract can only be realized after careful and loving study of the reality. Using acrylics and a tool inherited from her father, a palette knife, she tries to capture immediacy, mood and emotion.

Every time we see work we are filled with a sense of awe!

The buildings speak to the fact the architect/designer has been drawing with the single-minded focus of getting into this profession since he was in primary school.

We hope to see more buildings with his signature motifs pop-up over the years.🚀

In Episode 26 of Story Untold, we sat with Jono Terry - a
documentary photographer primarily focused on post-colonial Africa. His photographic projects aim to unpack & confront colonial history whilst offering insight into its continued legacy on African society.

Most recently he has been exploring the social history of Zimbabwe, the country of his birth, & the subsequent politics of belonging that remain since its independence in 1980.

As a grandson of British immigrants to Rhodesia, he is interested in questioning his own belonging as a colonial legacy and navigating the complex landscape of white, Zimbabwean (African) identity.

His varying methods to visualise post-colonial identity include photography, botany, cultural memory, anecdotes, and personal archives. He is strongly motivated by creating a dialogue about the past in order to decolonize the present.

[NEW EPISODE] We sat down with Gugulethu Siso CEO of Thumeza - a fintech startup providing working capital financing to the logistics industry

Thumeza has been active in the logistics industry for the past 4 years, having started out as a last mile service provider. From here, they transitioned to a freight centric platform connecting small scale transporters to large enterprises with goods to be moved.

Thumeza has experienced the joys of landing a large client & the lows of realising they can’t afford to service their load. This realisation is what led to their eventual transition to providing working capital financing to the logistics industry.

Lack of access to credit adversely affects hundreds of thousands of transporters, large and small enterprises who depend on them across the continent.

In episode 13 of Story Untold ZW, we talk about all this (and more) with Gugulethu Siso, the CEO and Co-Founder of Thumeza ...
