The Director General of the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr Jean Kaseya

The Permanent Representatives Committee of the African Union has approved an emergency allocation of $10.4 million from existing COVID funds to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to support ongoing efforts to combat the Mpox outbreak across the continent.

The Africa CDC disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

The Africa CDC is a specialised technical institution of the African Union that supports Member States in strengthening health systems and improving surveillance, emergency response, and the prevention of infectious diseases.

The PRC is responsible for preparing the work of the African Union’s Executive Council and acting on its instructions. The PRC is vital in implementing decisions and policies to promote African peace, security, and stability.

From January to July 2024, 15,074 Mpox cases (2,853 confirmed; 12,221 suspected) and 461 deaths (a case fatality rate of 3.06 per cent) have been reported across 12 AU Member States.

: Obey court order on venue restriction, Kwara police tell protesters
3rd August 2024

The Kwara State Police Command has warned those wishing to join the ongoing protest to comply with the recent court order restricting the protest to the Metropolitan Square, Asa Dam Road, Ilorin, the state capital.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Victor Olaiya, on Friday, the Command said the warning was necessary to prevent the protest from being hijacked by miscreants, as has happened in some other states.

“It is evident that the protests in states like Niger, Borno, Kano, and Yobe have been hijacked, resulting in the loss of lives and properties.

“Citizens wishing to exercise their franchise must comply with the recent court ruling in the state,” the police said.
The statement added that the General Post Office and other venues, apart from the one designated by the Court, were not appropriate places to hold any rally or protest.

“We urge all groups to follow the court ruling, which stipulates that protests must take place at the Metropolitan Square along Asa Dam Road. The Post Office is not an approved location for such gatherings,” it said.

It also urged the protest leaders to meet with the state Commissioner of Police to discuss security measures for the safety of participants in the protest.

“We also request that protest leaders meet with the Commissioner of Police to strategise on security measures and ensure the safety of all participants.

“Your cooperation is essential towards maintaining public order and safety in the state,” the police said in the statement.

PUNCH Online reports that a Kwara State Magistrates Court ordered the restriction of organisers of the August 1-10 hunger protest in the state to the Metropolitan Square in Ilorin, the state capital.

Protesters have said the protests would continue unless President Bola Tinubu meets their demands.

They called on the president to do the needful and the protests would be immediately called off.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Director of Mobilisation, Take It Back Movement, Damilare Adenola, lamented that the oppression under the president’s leadership had lasted too long.

He said, “The various court orders restricting protesters to particular locations are an aberration.

”Our presence here today is an announcement that we have been oppressed for too long.

“Today, we have risen. We saying to the president that unless President Bola Tinubu accede to our demands we will remain on the streets. We want to see the president on the street. During the protest, he was on the street.”

One of the leaders of the Take It Back Movement, Ayoola Babalola, said the show of force around the premises of the Moshood Abiola is an embarrassment to the nation.

He vowed that protesters would not be intimidated.

Tension, food prices rise as hunger protest begins today
1st August 2024

Prices of foodstuff have again gone up in major markets across the country as Nigerians engaged in panic buying in a bid to stock their homes before the planned nationwide protest begin today, The PUNCH reports.

This comes as last-ditch moves by the Federal Government to stop the protest failed to arrest the momentum generated by the organisers, who insisted the protest would go on as planned.

The protest organisers want an improvement in the soaring cost of living and a reversal of some harsh government policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidy.

The subsidy removal, along with ongoing security issues in farming regions, has led to increased transportation costs and subsequent food inflation.

In a late rally to stop the demonstration, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Wednesday, addressed an emergency press conference where he again admonished Nigerians to shun the proposed protest.

Other top officials also pleaded for the suspension of the protest, including the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Atiku Bagudu (Budget and Planning), Wale Edun (Economy) and presidential media aide, Bayo Onanuga, among others.

They reeled out all the people-oriented policies and programmes implemented by the Tinubu government and sought the understanding of Nigerians.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also invited journalists for an urgent press conference at the force headquarters.

Also, the National Assembly held a plenary on Wednesday after cutting its recess short.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, addressed youths at a hastily convened town hall meeting at the National Assembly Complex, where he reiterated his appeal to the protest organisers to embrace dialogue with the Federal Government to find solutions to the hardship.

Finance ministry withholds N4.9bn unity schools’ meal subsidy
1st August 2024

Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman

The Ministry of Finance has failed to release the sum of N4.9bn meal subsidy of 112 Federal Unity Colleges across the country.

Our correspondent discovered this through sources within the Federal Civil Service alongside multiple letters written by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, to his finance counterpart, Wale Edun.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that the finance ministry failed to release the interventions for November and December 2023 but went ahead to pay the interventions for January 2024 to date.

Our correspondent found out that the sum of N2,478,056,400 is being paid monthly to all the 112 FUCs.

The immediate past Permanent Secretary of the FME, Didi Walson-Jack, who is now the Head of Civil Service of the Federation-designate, in February 2024, wrote her finance counterpart asking that the interventions for the two months be released.

Walson-Jack, in her letter, noted that the failure to release the subsidy was affecting the smooth running of the colleges.

“Approval and payment of the outstanding months of meal subsidy will ensure effective planning, management and ex*****on of the meal subsidy programme in the colleges. It would also give the colleges the leverage to stock enough food items to guard against the incessant price inflation being experienced on a daily basis.

“It is imperative to note that the current challenges being encountered in the management of the meal subsidy in the Federal Unity Colleges are resultant effects of high and still rising cost of food items in the country and the worsening effect of the recurring late releases of the meal subsidy funds,” the former Permanent Secretary said in her letter.

However, further findings revealed that despite Walson-Jack’s letter, the finance ministry failed to release the outstanding funds, prompting the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman.

Reps directs NNPC to suspend crude-for-loan deal
1st August 2024.

The House of Representatives Special Joint Committee investigating factors working against the petroleum sector has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to halt what it called the mortgage of Nigeria’s future crude oil until it concludes its assignment.

Recall that the committee chaired by the lawmaker representing Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, commenced its probe of shady deals in the sector last week.

The committee’s directive followed reports that NNPC is planning to borrow an additional $2bn in crude oil-backed loans from international creditors to boost its financial inflow.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Mele Kyari, according to the panel, reportedly stated that the national oil company was in discussions with international creditors to raise an oil-backed credit facility.

undefined0.00 / 0.00

This was a sequel to recent findings that the national oil company was struggling to pay international oil traders a backlog of $6bn amid subsidy removal.

In a statement issued by Ugochinyere on Wednesday, the lawmaker urged NNPC not to undermine the forensic investigation by the House of Representatives with another fresh loan.

It warned that the move if allowed, would further worsen the situation of things, starve the refineries of feed-stock, weaken revenue generation and create room for waste of future revenue.

The statement reads, “The citizens were excited on the recent news of President Bola Tinubu’s intervention for crude supply to local refineries in naira and the committee has received intel of plans to mortgage future crude revenue and oil for another loan at a time the nation is struggling.

This is preemptive of the committee’s work and we want to announce the halt of this fresh move and for the state oil company to brief the parliament.

The revenue being mortgaged is a sovereign wealth of the people.

31/07/2024

The Federal Government has declared all its 256 custodial centres across the country as “red zones” ahead of the August 1 planned nationwide anti-government protests.

The Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, said this in a Tuesday statement by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar.

Nababa emphasised that any person or group of persons who have no business whatsoever should steer clear of the custodial centres.

“In view of the purported national protest scheduled to hold on August 1, the service wishes to inform the public that the custodial centres have been designated as red zones.

“Furthermore, the service wishes to enjoin the public that custodial and non-custodial centres are critical national assets that are germane to public safety as well as national security.

“Tampering with or attacking them will lead to a breakdown of law and order, and further exacerbate the security of the society in general,” he said.

Nababa advised all members of the public to join hands with the service to ensure the protection of correctional facilities.

He said adequate security arrangements had been put in place to ensure that no correctional facility was “defiled”.

He added that the Ministry of Interior Joint Task Force had been activated to provide extra security in and around custodial facilities nationwide.

The NCoS boss appreciated the continuous cooperation of members of the public in ensuring peace and tranquility in and around correctional centres nationwide.

He urged public members to report any suspicious plan or movement to the NCoS.

In 2020, the massive nationwide protest led to the compromise of some custodial facilities, leading to jailbreaks during which over 2,000 inmates reportedly escaped.

In Edo State, hoodlums, in the guise of protesters, attacked the Oko and Benin custodial centres where a total of 1,993 inmates escaped, while 58 inmates escaped from the Okitipupa custodial centre.

Soldiers, policemen and other security personnel on Tuesday occupied the popular Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of the protest scheduled to be held in the Federal Capital Territory and other major cities on Thursday.

Our correspondents at the square counted over 300 security operatives at the facility.

Also, 26 military vans, 12 police patrol vehicles and a Black Maria were parked within and around the arena.

The security forces took over the square as the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the protest organisers disagreed on the mode of conduct of the demonstration.

At a virtual meeting with the IG on Tuesday, the group rejected the police proposal for confined protests.

Egbetokun had recommended that the protests be restricted to confined areas for public safety reasons.

But Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, the solicitor for the protest organisers, rejected the suggestion.

The meeting had in attendance human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, other key members of the Take It Back Movement and other civil society organisations.

Speaking to The PUNCH after the meeting, Adegboruwa said the area of disagreement was the confinement of protesters to a particular location.

He said the organisers disagreed because it was against their fundamental rights.

Adegboruwa said, “We agreed that the citizens of Nigeria are entitled to protest and that the police would not do anything that would hinder or jeopardize the exercise of that right. That was a basic thing we all agreed upon. We also agreed that police have a statutory duty to offer protection to citizens whenever they protest.

“Our area of disagreement was the area of confinement. The police prefer, based on the venue sent to them, we should protest in a confined arena. We insisted that we have a right to rally and embark on procession. They said they don’t have the manpower that would go round across all cities.”
In what appeared to be a setback for the group, the Lagos State High Court .

31/07/2024

An associate of June 12,1993 hero, the late Chief MKO Abiola, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem, has knocked former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar over his comment on the planned August 1 nationwide protest.

He said for Nigerians to know that Atiku has their love in mind; he and his cronies should come out with their children and wives to lead the proposed protest.

Featuring on a radio programme at Fresh FM, Ibadan, the elder statesman said Atiku was more of a Dubai resident than Nigeria and should therefore bring back his immediate family comprising his wives, children and relatives to lead the protest.

He expressed displeasure about how disgruntled elements are going about the planed protest as if they are enemies of Nigeria

Kazeem said: “It was the same thing the cabals did during the 1993 presidential election that saw the late Chief Abiola emerging as the president, which was later thwarted due to their selfish interest. The same way they have been going on with the planned protest.’’

Let me inform Atiku and his cronies that are planning national protest that this is not the time for such unpatriotic move. This is the time for the Yoruba to be united and ready to defend President Tinubu’s mandate with all they have.

There was a mild drama yesterday as a Senate panel turned down the memorandum of the Ministry of Steel Development on Ajaokuta Steel Company.
The panel described the memorandum as “watery”.
The investigative public hearing was organised by the Senate ad hoc committee on the “alleged incidences of corruption and inefficiency in Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCOL) and National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO) and the general state of affairs in the Federal Government owned companies from 2002 till date”.

The Minister of Steel Development, Mustapha Audu Abubakar, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chris Osaruwanmwen, made the presentation to the committee was described as “watery” and later stood down.
Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Adeniyi Ayodele Adegbonmire (SAN), wondered how Ajaokuta would ever work when the Ministry of Steel, which directly supervises the project presented only “a two-page watery memorandum” to the Senate committee saddled with the enormous job.
