Weekly Bible Deep Dive • “Women of the Bible: A Window of Faith - The Story of Rahab”

Scriptures: Hebrews 11:30-31

Hebrews 11 is the hall of fame of people in the Bible that showed a lot of faith. “Hero’s of Faith” goes over several people in scripture that showed so much faith in God. Noah, Enoch, Abel, Moses are a few just to name. Even though these are focused on well known stories, I want to focus on the story of Rahab, which was known as a pr******te. She was mentioned in verses 30 and 31 but we will take a look into Joshua 2, where her story of faith is told.

Joshua took over after the death of Moses. He was about to take about 2 million people across the Jordan river and conquer the land. Joshua sent out spies to look out the land. The two spies ended up taking refuge in Rahab’s home. The king heard of the spies and come to her home, but she protected the spies and told the King they already departed. As we continue to read in Joshua 2 Rahab goes to the spies after the gate had shut and the King left. They were hiding on the roof and she admitted that she knew God had sent them. The people of the land were living in terror. They have heard of the splitting of the sea, and other instances that God has done for them. Rahab stated in verse 11 that God is the supreme of the heavens and earth. She asked for her and her family to be saved since she’s helped the spies. The spies agreed to help as long as she didn’t betray them.

Rahab’s home was built into the town wall, so her window had access to outside of the town. The king had left looking for the spies, and the gate had been shut. Rahab hung a rope out of her window and told them where to hide for 3 days. When they return, Rahab was instructed to leave the scarlet rope hanging outside her window, and her family must be in the home. If they were in the streets or anywhere else, her family would be killed. The spies hid 3 days in the hill country and returned across the river to Joshua and the tribe.

There were some things that Joshua did before going back into the town. You can read that through the chapter 3-5. I’m chapter 6 we start the walk around the Jericho wall. There were several things they had to go through while walking around the wall for 7 days. After the wall fell, Joshua told the spies to recuse Rahab and her family, while all of the town was destroyed. Rahab and her family were spared because of her faith.

Even though her lifestyle was not Godly, she quickly realized how powerful God is. She was afraid just as much as the rest of the town, but she took a leap of faith to protect the Israelites. She didn’t know much about God, but she heard of the sea being split and all the things God has done for his people. God saved Rahab because of her faith, not her profession.

This just shows how strong and fast faith can work. Even a person in the midst of a rough lifestyle can turn around and find God. She could have faced many consequences if the King found out she was hiding the spies. She had to be full of fear, but her faith made her strong and brave. God gives us the strength to step out on faith even if it seems scary. No matter what our past is or our certain circumstances, faith in God can change us instantly. His hand is always there to reach out. No matter what you’ve done in life, God’s love is more powerful. He can save you from the darkest part of your life, from things you are ashamed of, from a lifestyle that brings you down. He is stronger than anything, and His love is better than anything this world has to offer. No matter what your story is, He wants to be a part of your life.
