Thirsty? 💦
I love feeling hydrated, the energy, happiness & glow that comes with - so I'm usually on top of my hydration goals. Occasionally, I experience phases of not enjoying it 😔 I don't consume enough, start feeling foggy, cranky & sluggish. This often happens this time of year.
5 ways I adjust my hydration to make it more appealing & successful;
1. Flavour Enhancers: fruits & veg change the flavour! Cucumber, lime, strawberries, mint, muddle some melon etc. You can also purchase flavour enhancers from the grocery store, dilute juice, Gatorade, etc.
2. Temperature: sounds odd, but I love hot water! I even add 🍋It’s like a hug in a mug & the perfect way to hydrate before bed. The opposite applies too – sometimes I LOVE adding ice to water 🧊 – sounds basic, but from someone who drinks room temp water 24/7, it makes it fun sometimes 😅
3. Water Alternatives: Coconut 🥥 & Aloe can be an acquired taste, IF you enjoy it, it is immensely hydrating & packed full of many other goodies. My fave drink right now is Sparkling Lime Coconut Water. The carbonation is a nice treat!
4. Associations: walking by our fridge or sink – have a glass. Meal, snack, or sitting to relax, bring a glass. I forget often, so having associations help. Thirst as an indicator is not best – feeling thirsty means you are already dehydrated 🥵 For optimal hydration, drink before thirst kicks in! Having a larger dedicated glass or bottle helps. I have my own dedicated 24 oz mug that travels with me throughout the home.
5. Eat your water: there are so many fruits & veggies that up your hydration. Snacking on these or adding them to meals is great! Some ideas; cucumber, tomatoes, celery, lettuce, melons, soups, broths. Is it weird to sit at my desk with a cup of broth or dhal? Bc I’m hydrating & it’s delicious.
Most of this is not new info – but things that work for me. It’s a reminder that hydration effects so many aspects of your day & MOOD. Just like hanger, dehydration can make you cranky, irritable, increase the onset or amplify symptoms of anxiety & depression.
