This Dual Guinness World Record Expedition is set in Siberia in the Russian Federation, Pre War & Pre Pandemic -
The film is the story of two determined Irish men realising their mutual dream, born out of curiosity, and fuelled by a passion for discovering the people and places in this vast world. One Mile Down: Siberian Scramble is not only about an extreme motorbike & 4x4 expedition but how a common passion for life and adventure can bring together a team of people from all corners of the planet and how this disparate group pulled off a crazy but ultimately beautiful feat of derring-do in the most severe terrain on the planet.

ONE MILE DOWN follows the dreams of two Irishmen – motor bike adventure enthusiast Declan McEvoy and one-eyed thrill seeker Gary O'Keeffe - as their international team of 6 riders and one UAZ 4x4 drive for 7 days across the ice of Lake Baikal in the middle of a minus 40-degree Siberian winter. Over these 7 days the team experiences severe cold, they laugh, cry and endure one of the most challenging adventures in their lives.
Team Baikal now reunites after 2 long years for the first time since their epic adventure in 2020 at the 34th Galway Film Fleadh at the Pálás Cinema on Saturday, July 9th for the World Premiere of One Mile Down. It will be a night to remember!

In case you were wondering if one of us ended up IN Lake Baikal... 🤔😱🥶🏊🏻‍♂️ This is practicing for the worst case scenario at our shakedown in Visit Rovaniemi - the Official Hometown of Santa Claus last December 🎅 where the whole team was fitted with all the fab motorcycle gear supplied by Rukka Motorsport.🤘😍 We were kitted out from head to toe with their finest cold weather motorsport gear ❄️🏍 🏁 which kept us all warm, safe, comfortable and looking irresistible 🔥😉🤪 on our adventure. 💪 Big shout out also to TCX Focus on Boots for their super comfy and stylish boots 👊😎 💯‼️🤩

🌄 Sunsets on Lake Baikal are without a doubt stunning! 🤩 You want to make sure though you enjoy them from a nice cozy camp 🛋🔥 set up well before‼️ dark 🌌⏳🏕 or you're in deep trouble 🥶🔦🐻🌝 We knew, as we progressed North into more uninhabited territory, that we had to be prepared to spend a night camping out on the lake ❄️ We used Universal Tents from ПФ Берег г. Екатеринбург that can be adapted for hot and sub zero weather conditions 🥵🥶 Bereg tents come in different sizes, suitable for up to 8 people and feature a wood stove and camp beds. They are also really easy to set up, a bit like opening an umbrella ☔️ and are fixed right into the ice with threaded anchors. So with the accommodation sorted, your only concern is your fellow campers behaving themselves 😉🤪🤘🙃🎪🤡🤭😴

🥁🥁🥁 With our post production team busy working on documentary 📽🍿it’s time to put the spotlight on the guys who captured our record breaking adventure 🎬 🦸🏼‍♂️🏆and made us all look absolutely fabulous 🤩 🤨 … most of the time 🎥🎢🕺🙃😎🤣 Meet:
👉 award-winning documentary film-maker and mountaineer Alexander Hick from Bavaria who doesn’t mind sporting a few icicles on his face 🥶
👉 Naoise Kettle, up-and-coming film-maker from Laois, the youngest member on Team Baikal and award-winning fiddle player 🤩
👉 Simas Šuminskas from Lithuania, working his magic producing all the hilarious video footage 🤪 straight from Lake Baikal. Not afraid of the cold, he has also perfected UAZ surfing to get the best shots 🏄‍♂️
👉 And last but not least 🏁 Egidijus Babelis - automotive journalist and motorsport photographer🤘🤩📷 from Lithuania - the genius behind the lens who captured our adventure and the stunning scenery of Lake Baikal 👏👏👊🤩

If you’ve ever travelled in a group 🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🚎 you know how important it is to keep track of each rider on the team 👨‍🚀🛰 and communicate 📣 to make sure everyone’s ok ... especially in the harsh conditions of a 32,722km2 big frozen lake, miles away from civilisation 🥶📡 used Sena's supercool 30K communication system to 👊😎 Its Mesh Networking technology automatically pairs riders within a range of 8km and allows up to 6 people to talk at the same time. While we’re not sure 🤔 if that was a helpful feature at all times 🤣🤬🤭🤫 it surely got us across Lake Baikal in one piece 😅🤪.. and they also gave us their Prism action camera 🎥🤘🤩

😍 How we love that record-breaking iconic beast of a van ❤️❤️❤️ Our support vehicle has been welded into one from an old Soviet classic – the UAZ 452 – and a Toyota chassis and engine. Kitted out for this unique challenge, the UAZ has been fitted with two winches – one in the front and one in the back – in case one takes a nose dive through the ice 😱🥶💦 and has to be pulled back out. It's insulated with special Dodo Mat recycled Thermo Liner to withstand those Siberian sub-zero temperatures on Lake Baikal and carries our spare tyres and camping equipment.
The UAZ also serves as charging station for all technical equipment used by our film team ... and not to forget ... it broke a🏅Guinness World Record ‼️ We always knew it wouldn't let us down 🤘🤣 💔👊😅

Lake Baikal with its stunning scenery and mystical solitude is also home to the - originally Mongolian - Buryats. To this day Shamanism and its focus on the worship of nature plays a huge role here🌊🏔🌪🌄 Olkhon Island is an important sacred place and stop here for an offering ritual 🔥🍶. We have to appease the spirits 😇🍃🙏 for protection and a safe journey across the lake ✌️🏍

Meet the guy riders trusted with their lives crossing the frozen Lake Baikal 🦸🏻‍♂️🩺🧊🗺 😎 This is Oleg, our Ice Captain, a local expert travelling with us on our adventure doing his magic to save our backsides 😉 He can read the condition of the lake and with his experience minimised the risk of breaking through the ice – especially for our 3.5t UAZ ☃️🥶😅🚎 We frequently had to stop and wait for Oleg to assess the thickness of the ice with an auger before we could proceed … nevertheless, don’t forget NOT‼️ to fasten your seatbelts in case a speedy exit from the vehicle is required 🌊🥶🤪
