Catch the next episode of Dublin’s Historic South on Dublin South FM today at 3pm!!

I’m joined this month by the ever brilliant Trisha Angela, an archaeologist & historian who helped me reveal the area of Rathgar (and neighbouring Terenure)

From humble farmland beginnings and a placename that means 'rough ringfort', as the centuries progressed Rathgar is rough no more. Coming into its own in the 19th century we revealed everything from gardening schools to forgotten castles - all whilst focusing, as equally, on neighbouring Terenure. Joined by archaeologist & historian Trisha Ryan we revealed the stories of these areas above and below the surface.

The podcast, as per, will be live on Friday!!

Here's a quick Snippet of almost local history!

"Did you know that John Boyd Dunlop, the creator of the Pneumatic Tyre, once lived on the Stillorgan Road?

He lived in Talbot House from 1893-1897, it was where the Ashurst (Apple-Green) Filling Station currently is (on the far side of Mount Merrion Avenue, opposite Greygates). Built in 1845, its first owner was William Talbot Molloy (who may have named the house after himself)!

Born in Scotland, John Boyd Dunlop was actually a Veterinary Surgeon, having qualified at just 19 years of age in Edinburgh. In 1890, he had the largest Veterinary Practice in Ireland and had many patents to his name, in addition to his most famous Patent, that of the pneumatic tyre.

Following that most famous Patent which was granted on this day 7th December in 1888, the first Pneumatic Tyre factory in Ireland opened in Dublin in 1889 at No.67, Upper Stephen's Street, Dublin (see photograph of plaque). It was followed by a factory in Hanau, Hessen, Deutschland (Germany) in 1891, where they ultimately named the street after him as 'Dunlopstrasse'.

John Boyd Dunlop died 100 years ago this year, in October 1921, aged 81.

You'd never know today when passing the Ashurst, that the location was once home to one of the world's greatest commercial inventors (since the Wheel itself), its creator living right here on our Doorstep.

We ought to have a 'Dunlopstrasse' too!
